Chapter 3

The hotel was a small one off Lexington. I picked it because I had never been there with him.

The room had a kettle, a window that didn't open, and a bed too large for one person. I sat on the edge of it with my coat still on for a long time. Then I took the coat off and folded it across the chair, because that felt like the next thing to do.

I did not call anyone.

There was no one to call.

I thought I would cry. I waited for it the way you wait for weather. It didn't come. What came instead was a strange, level quiet. Like I had walked into a room I had lived in for years and noticed, for the first time, that all the furniture was gone. The walls were further apart than I remembered. The ceiling was higher. I could see the actual shape of the space.

I lay down on top of the covers in my clothes. I slept for nine hours.

---

The second morning, I ordered coffee from room service. It came too hot. I drank it anyway and burned my tongue, and the small physical sting of it felt almost like company.

I opened my laptop on the small desk by the window.

I had not opened the design folder in three years. The file was where I left it. A floorplan I had been sketching for a friend's brownstone before Caleb decided my time was better spent attending his dinners. A mood board for a boutique hotel I had pitched to no one. A loose collection of photographs—light moving across a hardwood floor at four in the afternoon, the way a hallway narrowed into shadow, a single chair angled toward a window.

I looked at the chair for a long time.

I began a new document. Portfolio—E.H. The cursor blinked at me, patient.

I started typing.

It felt almost illicit. Like I was stealing time from someone. Then I remembered there was no one to steal from anymore, and I kept going until the light in the window turned gray, then orange, then dark.

---

I went back to the penthouse on Tuesday.

I did it quietly, the way you'd approach a room where someone is sleeping. I let myself in with my key and moved through the apartment as though I were a guest. Caleb was at the office. Nora was gone—he'd quietly let her go after Christmas, less out of decency than out of the inconvenience of the optics.

Paisley's coat was in the hall closet.

I noted it without expression. I walked through the kitchen, the den, the bedroom I no longer slept in. I noted what had moved, what had appeared, what had been replaced. A new candle on the entry table. A pair of woman's slippers tucked beside the chaise.

She was nesting. Already.

Over the next three days, I watched them the way you watch a hand of cards before you play.

Paisley came by in the late afternoons. She did not pretend to be visiting me. She moved through the apartment like she was measuring it for curtains. She would touch the back of the sofa as she passed, run a finger along the marble of the island, lift the lid of the silver dish on the entry table to see what was inside. Each gesture small. Each gesture a claim.

When Caleb came home, she folded herself against him with the easy proprietorship of someone who had already done the math. She laughed at the right places. She called him by a nickname I had never heard her use before. She watched me, sometimes, over the rim of her wine glass, with a kind of polite curiosity. Like I was a piece of furniture she would be replacing soon and was deciding whether to donate or simply throw out.

She wanted the title. She wanted the name. She wanted the life. I could see it in her hands, in the way they kept finding the surfaces of the apartment, learning them.

And Caleb.

Caleb still expected me to come around.

I saw it every time he glanced at me across a room. The faint impatience, the indulgent waiting. He had decided I was performing a tantrum, and he was prepared to be magnanimous when I finished. He had never, in all the years he had known me, watched me actually leave. He could not imagine the shape of it.

Two certainties. Hers and his.

I laid them on the table beside each other in my mind and began to build.

---

Owen called on Thursday afternoon.

I was at the desk in the guest room with my laptop open. I picked up on the second ring.

"Mrs. Nichols." His voice was careful, the way it always was. "Mr. Nichols is hosting a small gathering at the Hamptons house this weekend. A few associates. He'd like you to attend."

"Would he."

"For the optics, ma'am."

I almost smiled. Owen never lied to me. It was one of the reasons I had always liked him.

"Tell him I'll be there."

There was a pause on the line. Longer than it needed to be.

I waited.

"Mrs. Nichols—" He stopped. I could hear him breathing on the other end, choosing and unchoosing words. Whatever he had been about to say, he set it down.

"I'll send a car Saturday morning," he said finally.

"Thank you, Owen."

I used his name on purpose. I heard him hear it.

"Of course, ma'am."

I hung up.

I sat at the desk for a moment with my hand still on the phone. Then I reached into the drawer and took out the manila folder Marian had given me. I slid it into my weekend bag, between a folded sweater and a pair of low-heeled shoes.

I zipped the bag.

I sat down again and went back to the portfolio.
