Chapter 5

The light woke me before anything else.

Not the thin, grey suggestion of light I'd learned to chase through a heating vent. Not the cold fluorescent strip above the basement door. This was morning light — wide and gold and completely indifferent to whether I deserved it — pouring through a window that took up half the wall.

A real window. Glass and frame and the city beyond it, alive and moving and enormous.

I stared at it for a long time.

Someone was sitting in the chair beside my bed. I registered that without looking. I wasn't ready to look at anything except the window.

"You're safe." His voice was quiet. Not soft exactly — more like careful. The way you speak in a room where something fragile is trying to decide whether to stay. "No one knows you're here."

I didn't answer right away.

Outside, a bird crossed the window. Just a dark shape, gone in a second. But I watched the whole arc of it — the entry, the crossing, the disappearance — and felt something shift in my chest. A pressure I hadn't known was there, releasing.

Then I was crying.

Not the way I'd cried in the basement, when I pressed my face into my pillow so the cameras wouldn't catch it. This was different. Ugly and uncontrolled and completely silent, tears sliding sideways into the pillow, my good hand pressed flat against my sternum like I was trying to hold something in.

The man in the chair didn't move. Didn't reach for me. Didn't say a word.

He just stayed.

That was what broke me open the rest of the way. Not kindness, exactly. Just — presence. The simple, radical fact of someone sitting beside me without wanting anything from me at all.

I cried until I couldn't anymore. Then I wiped my face and looked at the window again.

Two stars were still visible at the upper edge of the glass, fading into the brightening sky.

I watched them go.

---

His name was Atlas Gordon. I'd heard it before — Derek had said it like a curse, the way powerful men say the names of other powerful men who make them nervous. I filed that away and said nothing.

The weeks that followed were the strangest of my life. Stranger, even, than the basement. Because the basement had rules I understood. This had none.

Nora came every morning and tended my arm, my ribs, the slow work of putting a body back together. She talked while she worked — not about me, just talk. The weather. A book she'd read. What she'd had for breakfast. Normal, inconsequential human conversation, offered freely, requiring nothing.

Atlas came in the evenings.

He brought things without announcing them: a stack of books, a lamp with warmer light, a list of the apartment's features written in plain handwriting so I could orient myself. The apartment was flooded with natural light — south-facing, high floor, windows on three sides. I dismantled the blackout blinds the first night and slept in the ambient glow of the city below.

He asked what I wanted to eat. He asked what I wanted to read. He asked what I wanted, and then he waited for the answer, and then he listened to it.

Every time, I felt the question land somewhere strange and undefended inside me. I had spent eight years being told what I was and what I was for. Being asked what I wanted was so foreign it felt almost like a threat — like something I needed to be careful around until I understood it better.

I started swimming in the early mornings. The building had a pool, and at five a.m. it was always empty. I moved through the water alone, lap after lap, and felt my body remember what it knew: that it was strong. That it had carried itself through worse than this. That it was mine.

---

Six months after I stepped off that cliff, Atlas came to my apartment and sat across from me at the kitchen table and told me what his network had found.

Hayes had collapsed during morning assembly. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Aggressive. Advanced. They needed a bone marrow transplant immediately.

Every registry came back empty.

Atlas put a single sheet of paper on the table and didn't say anything else.

I looked at it for a moment. Then I got up and walked to the window and stood there watching the city.

Hayes. Seven years old and Kathryn's perfect weapon, right up until his own body turned against him. His rare HLA markers — the ones he got from me, from the mother Kathryn spent seven years erasing — matched only one donor in any database on the West Coast.

Me.

I stood at that window for a long time.

I thought about the basement. The eight years. The birthday party and the darts and the blood soaking through a catering uniform while Kathryn watched with a serene smile. The balcony. The cliff. Hayes's empty, patient eyes.

I thought about Derek's face in that last moment — the fear, the lunge, the hand closing on empty air.

By morning, I knew what I was going to do. Not because I still loved Hayes the way I once had. That love — the desperate, unconditional, basement love — was gone. What remained was something colder and more precise.

Debt.

Derek Crawford owed me eight years of sky. He owed me my family. He owed me every day I spent on my knees in that room believing I was loved.

I was going to collect.

I called my legal representative at seven a.m. and gave her the terms. One condition. Non-negotiable. Derek Crawford would come to a designated location. He would kneel. He would press his forehead to the floor three times.

The act would be recorded.

There was no negotiation.

I hung up and stood at the window with my coffee going cold in my hand, watching the morning light move across the city below — wide and gold and indifferent and mine — and waited for him to run out of other options.
