Chapter 1

The SUV smelled like new leather and my perfume. I sat in the back seat, watching Manhattan slide past the tinted windows. The city looked clean in the morning light. Sharp. I wore cream cashmere and pearl earrings. My hair was done. My makeup was perfect. I felt good.

Today was Livia's party. Her "Sip and See." I'd planned everything myself—the flowers, the cake, the guest list. Ridge said I was overdoing it, but I wanted it to be special. Our daughter's first party. I wanted people to see her and know she was loved.

I reached for my phone to check the timeline one more time. My hand closed around cold metal. I pulled it out and looked at the screen. Wrong case. Black, not rose gold. Ridge's phone.

I almost laughed. We had the same model. I must have grabbed his by mistake when we left the penthouse. He'd been in the shower. His phone was on the counter next to mine. Easy mistake.

The screen lit up with a notification. A message from "C." I stared at the letter. Just C. No name. No photo. The preview showed a voice message icon and a timestamp: 7:43 AM. Three minutes ago.

I should have put the phone down. I should have texted Ridge and told him I'd bring it to the venue. But something cold moved through my chest. C. I didn't know anyone in Ridge's contacts saved as just a letter.

I pressed play.

Camilla's voice filled the car. Breathy. Careful. Clinical.

"Okay, so I checked with my nursing friend again. RSV transmits best through direct saliva contact. I'll kiss her on the mouth during the party. Forty minutes before we call 911. That gives the virus time to take hold. The formula Nancy's bringing has the respiratory irritant mixed in. We feed her right after I kiss her. It'll look like sudden onset. Totally natural."

I stopped breathing.

Ridge's voice came next. Calm. Steady. The same voice he used when he talked about stock options.

"Good. The policy pays out within thirty days if the death is classified as natural causes. I already talked to the funeral home. We'll keep Maeve so busy with arrangements she won't think to ask questions. Once the money clears, we file for divorce. You move in. Clean break."

Camilla laughed. Soft. Pleased.

"Your mom's really committed. She actually seemed excited about poisoning the formula."

"She hates Maeve," Ridge said. "Always has. And she's pissed we had a daughter instead of a son. She thinks this is doing me a favor."

The message ended.

I sat there. The SUV kept moving. The city kept sliding past. My hands were shaking. I looked down and saw my fingers locked around the phone, knuckles white. My wedding ring caught the light. Three carats. Platinum band. I'd worn it for two years.

I stopped twisting it. I pulled my hands apart and laid them flat on my lap. I didn't touch the ring again.

The driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror. "Mrs. Bennett? You okay?"

I met his eyes. My voice came out steady. "I'm fine."

I wasn't fine. My husband wanted to kill our daughter. His mistress was going to kiss her with a virus. His mother was going to feed her poison. They had a plan. They had a timeline. They had a funeral home picked out.

I looked out the window again. We were twenty minutes from the hotel. The party started in an hour. Guests were already on their way. The cake was being delivered. The photographer was setting up.

I pulled out my own phone. My hands weren't shaking anymore.

I called Declan Frost first. He answered on the second ring.

"Declan. I need you to go to the penthouse right now. Get Livia. Take her to the safe house in Connecticut. Don't tell anyone where you're going. Not Ridge. Not the nanny. No one."

He didn't ask questions. "Understood. What do you need at the venue?"

"There's a baby at St. Mary's Care Facility. Camilla Gomez's daughter. Severe congenital heart and lung issues. I need her brought to the hotel in Livia's clothes. Same blanket. Same carrier. Make it look identical."

A pause. Then: "Copy that. Anything else?"

"Record everything that happens at the party. Every conversation. Every movement. I want cameras on Camilla and Nancy the entire time."

"Done."

I hung up. Called my attorney next.

"I need an ironclad divorce settlement drafted by tonight. Zero alimony. Full asset protection. And I want the penthouse sale accelerated. I'm liquidating everything by end of week."

She didn't hesitate. "I'll have it ready."

Last call. The care facility director.

"This is Maeve Mitchell. I'm arranging a private transfer for patient Gomez. You'll receive authorization within the hour. A security team will handle transport. Full confidentiality. Bill my account directly."

"Of course, Mrs. Mitchell."

I ended the call. Put the phone down. Looked out the window.

The hotel appeared ahead. White stone. Gold awnings. Valets in black uniforms. I could see the entrance clearly now.

The SUV pulled up to the curb. The driver opened my door. I stepped out into the sunlight. Smoothed my dress. Checked my reflection in the glass doors. Perfect.

I walked inside. The coordinator rushed over with a clipboard and a nervous smile.

"Mrs. Bennett! Everything's ready. The florals just arrived. They're gorgeous."

"Thank you," I said. My voice was warm. Easy. I took the flowers she handed me. White roses. I smiled.

Guests started arriving. I greeted them at the entrance. Air-kisses. Compliments. Laughter. I moved through the room like nothing had changed.

But everything had changed.

I wasn't twisting my ring anymore. I wasn't thinking about my marriage. I wasn't hoping Ridge would be proud of the party I'd planned.

I was thinking about how they'd look when they pulled back the sheet.

I was thinking about the moment they'd realize what they'd done.

I smiled at the next guest. Accepted another hug. And waited.
