After My Husband Left Me to Die Chapter 1

When I unlocked the penthouse door, I noticed the shoes first.

They were cheap beige pumps, scuffed at the toe, kicked off haphazardly on my polished marble floor. A pale pink wool coat was draped over the back of my cream sofa.

I walked into the living room and froze.

A young woman was curled up in my reading nook by the bay window. She was small, with big hazel eyes and long brown hair. She looked familiar in a way that made my chest tighten. She looked almost exactly like the framed college photo Keegan kept locked in his desk.

She was wearing Keegan’s oversized grey college sweatshirt. The sleeves swallowed her hands.

Keegan was sitting at the kitchen island, his eyes glued to his phone screen. He didn't even look up as I set my keys on the counter.

"That's Charli," Keegan said casually, tapping his screen. "She’s an intern at the firm. Her lease ended early and her new place isn't ready. She’s taking the guest room for a few weeks."

The girl sat up and tucked her hair behind her ear. She gave me a soft, doe-eyed smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"Hi, Ophelia," she said, her voice breathy and sweet. "I've heard so much about you."

My heart pounded once, hard against my ribs. Three years ago, I sold my grandmother’s brownstone to save Keegan from bankruptcy. I had given up four generations of family history for him. In return, he had brought his past into my living room.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry. Tears were useless, and screaming was free.

"Welcome," I said quietly.

I turned around, walked down the hall into our master bedroom, and shut the door. I pulled out my phone, opened my Venmo app, and typed in Keegan’s username.

*Amount: $50,000.00.*

*Memo: Guest room rental — first month.*

I hit request.

Keegan hated public scenes more than anything. He avoided conflict like a plague. Less than thirty seconds later, a loud, cheerful chime rang out from my speakers.

*Cha-ching.*

Payment received.

A slow, cool calm washed over me. Every humiliation had a price now.

Over the next two weeks, I set the rules of the house.

When Charli wanted to sit next to Keegan at our candlelit anniversary dinner, I stepped aside without a word. I sent a request for thirty thousand dollars. Keegan paid it.

When Charli asked for half my walk-in closet for her dresses, I packed my coats into storage. That was twenty-five thousand dollars.

When Keegan begged me to show up at his mother’s Sunday brunch to play the dutiful wife for his investors, I named my rate: forty thousand dollars.

Each transaction was logged in Keegan’s texts. Each one ended with that bright, metallic *cha-ching*.

Charli watched me pack my things into smaller corners of the apartment. She smiled with quiet triumph, thinking I was giving up. She thought each step back was a surrender.

She had no idea.

Every night, after they fell asleep, I opened a hidden spreadsheet on my laptop. I watched the numbers tick upward. Every dollar went into a separate, locked account. My grandmother’s brownstone on the Upper West Side was going to cost millions to reclaim, and Keegan was funding every single brick.

Charli grew bolder.

One morning, I found her expensive face serums lined up across my vanity, crowding out my simple moisturizers. That afternoon, when I called Keegan’s cell to ask about mail, Charli answered.

"Keegan’s in the shower," she purred into the receiver. "Can I take a message?"

Later that evening, she posted an Instagram story from our balcony, holding a glass of red wine against the Manhattan skyline. Her caption read: *Our new view.*

I didn't confront her. I simply texted Keegan three screenshots.

*Inconvenience fee: $15,000.*

Two minutes later, the chime rang through the penthouse.

*Cha-ching.*

From the hallway, I saw Charli flinch. Her hands gripped her wine glass until her knuckles went pale. The sound was driving her crazy. She wanted me broken, but I was just getting rich.

By Friday, the balance was finally close enough to start the paperwork.

I drove to a quiet parking garage downtown and dialed my real estate attorney. My pulse raced with real hope for the first time in three years.

"George," I said into the phone, my voice trembling slightly. "I have the funds. Let's make an offer on the brownstone."

There was a long silence on the line. Too long.

"Ophelia," George sighed gently. "I looked into the deed records this morning, just like you asked."

"And?"

"The house isn't on the market," he said. "The anonymous buyer who picked it up at auction three years ago... they bought it through a blind trust. A private shell company."

"Can we contact the trust?"

"I tried," George said. "The lawyer on record refused to entertain any offers. He said the property is strictly off-market. It has never been listed, and it's not for sale at any price."

The line went dead.

The phone slipped from my fingers onto the passenger seat. The garage around me was dark and cold. The smell of damp concrete and exhaust filled the air.

I gripped the steering wheel with both hands. My chest felt hollow, like all the air had been sucked out of my lungs. That house was my grandmother’s soul. It was the only place I had ever felt truly safe, and now it was locked behind a faceless wall of corporate paper.

A hot tear spilled down my cheek. I let it fall. I sat there in the shadows and let myself mourn for sixty seconds.

Then I took a deep, steady breath. I wiped my face with the back of my hand.

I pulled my phone back onto my lap and looked at the spreadsheet balance.

Nothing was impossible. Everything had a price. If the buyer wouldn't sell for market value, I would simply need more cash.

I put the car in reverse. Charli and Keegan still had plenty to pay for.
