After My Husband Killed Our Baby, I Took Everything Chapter 1

The first thing I noticed was the receipt.

It was folded in half, tucked into the inside pocket of Wesley's charcoal blazer. I only found it because I was hanging his jacket up, the way I always did. The way a good wife does. Three months pregnant, back aching, and still picking up after him at ten at night.

I unfolded it under the kitchen light. A credit card statement. Not one I recognized. The balance made my stomach turn.

Forty-seven thousand dollars.

I sat down at the table.

I told myself there was an explanation. There's always an explanation. Wesley worked in finance. He moved money around. Maybe it was a work card. Maybe it was a mistake.

But my hands were already moving.

I went to his desk. The bottom drawer was locked, but the key was in the pen cup, because Wesley was Wesley, and Wesley never bothered to hide anything from a wife he assumed wasn't looking. Inside I found two more statements. A loan document from a lender I didn't recognize. Then another. Then a third.

And then I found his phone on the bathroom counter, screen glowing, unlocked, forgotten.

Kahlani Garza.

The name meant nothing to me at first. Then I opened the messages, and the transfers, and the livestream donation confirmations, and the name meant everything.

I sat at the kitchen table for four hours. I made a spreadsheet. I lined up the dates. I matched donations to withdrawals to loan disbursements. I did it the way I used to build campaign budgets, back when I had a career, back when I had a name that wasn't attached to his.

By the time I heard his key in the door, I had the whole picture.

One of my hands was resting on my stomach. I didn't remember putting it there.

---

"Audrey?" His voice was easy. Warm. He'd stopped somewhere on the way home. I could smell it on him. "Why are you still up?"

I didn't turn around. I just spread the papers out across the table, one after another, like I was dealing cards.

"Come sit down," I said.

He came into the kitchen and stopped.

I watched his face in the reflection of the microwave door. I watched the exact moment he understood.

"Wesley." My voice was so quiet it surprised me. "Explain this to me. Please."

He didn't sit.

"Where did you get this?"

"Your jacket. Your desk. Your phone." I finally looked up at him. "Explain it."

His jaw tightened. His eyes darted to the papers, then to me, then to the papers again, and I watched shame become something else. Something I had never seen on him before. Something animal.

"You went through my things."

"Wesley."

"You went through my things."

"There is a woman." I kept my voice level. "There is forty-seven thousand dollars on a card I've never seen. There is a loan for two hundred thousand. There is—"

The first slap knocked me sideways off the chair.

I remember thinking, absurdly, that the floor was cold. I remember the sound my knee made against the tile. I remember trying to get my hands up, trying to say the word baby, trying to say please, and then his foot came down and the word never made it out of my mouth.

After that, there was only the cramping.

---

I don't remember the neighbor. I don't remember the ambulance.

I remember fluorescent lights. I remember a woman in blue scrubs whose name tag said Ramirez saying something with her mouth very close to my ear. I remember the word gone. I remember she said it kindly, which somehow made it worse.

I didn't cry.

I kept waiting for it to come, the way you wait for a wave you can see coming from far away. But it didn't. I just lay there and looked at the ceiling tiles and counted them, and something inside me went very quiet.

---

Maeve got there before Wesley did. Which told me everything I needed to know about who Wesley was, and who Maeve was, and who I had been wrong about for a very long time.

I heard her before I saw her. Her heels in the hallway. Her voice, low and sharp, cutting through the waiting room like a wire.

"You don't get to speak right now, Wesley. You open your mouth one more time and I promise you I will make sure the entire building hears exactly what you did."

Then Edith's voice, brittle and clipped: "You have no idea what happened in that house. She pushes him. She has always pushed him. And I will not have this family dragged through—"

"Say one more word." Maeve's voice dropped lower. "Say one more word, Edith. I dare you."

I heard Wesley say nothing.

I closed my eyes and pictured him. Head down. Studying the linoleum. My husband. The father of the baby who wasn't a baby anymore.

---

Maeve came into the room and shut the door behind her. She didn't say anything for a long time. She just sat down in the plastic chair beside the bed and took my hand and held it.

Her thumb moved once, very slowly, across my knuckles.

Outside, somewhere down the hall, a monitor was beeping. Steady. Indifferent.

"Audrey." Her voice was soft now. Stripped of everything. "Tell me what you need."

I stared at the ceiling.

I thought about the spreadsheet on the kitchen table. I thought about the receipt in his jacket. I thought about the woman named Kahlani Garza whose face I hadn't even seen yet. I thought about Edith's voice in the hallway saying she pushes him, she has always pushed him.

I thought about my son or daughter, whichever one it would have been.

Something inside me settled. Not broken. Settled. Like water finding its level.

I didn't cry.

I began, very quietly, to think.
