Chapter 2

Three days after I saw them at the nail salon, my phone buzzed on the kitchen island.

I picked it up. A text from Kaeli.

There was a row of pink hearts. Underneath, the words jumped off the glass:

*I have the most EXCITING news, babe!!! Guess who's going to be a mama?!*

More pink hearts followed. A dancing baby emoji. A sparkling champagne glass.

I stared at the screen. The air left my lungs in one thin, silent breath. She framed it like a celebration between sisters. But I felt the knife beneath the words. It was pure triumph. She was rubbing it in my face before I even knew the game.

And I didn’t have to wonder who the father was.

A sharp cramp hit low in my stomach. It was purely in my head, but it made me double over. Suddenly, I wasn't standing in my bright penthouse kitchen anymore. I was back in a cold emergency room three years ago.

I remembered the smell of bleach. The rough hospital gown. The dull, agonizing ache between my hips as the nurse gently shook her head.

I remembered Dawson sitting on the edge of the bed. He had buried his face in my neck, sobbing. His tears had felt warm and wet against my collarbone.

"It’s okay, Alina," he had whispered, his voice cracking with textbook grief. "It’s a tragedy, but we have each other. We’ll get through this."

He had held my hand for hours. He had looked so broken.

Now, standing in the kitchen, a dark thought rose in my mind. It was cold and terrible.

My father had set up the family trust when I got married. The terms were clear: if I had a child, the controlling shares of Carpenter Industries would go directly into a trust for my heir. Dawson couldn't touch them. But without a child, if anything happened to me, Dawson stood to inherit everything.

My knuckles turned white around the phone.

*What if it wasn’t an accident?*

The thought made my skin crawl. Once the door opened, I couldn't close it.

I grabbed my coat and my bag.

Thirty minutes later, I walked through the sliding glass doors of Mount Sinai. The hospital was busy, full of people rushing past with coffee cups and clipboards. I took the elevator to the fourth floor and approached the reception desk of the women's clinic.

"I need my complete medical records from three years ago," I said. "Every lab result, every prescription log, every physician's note."

The receptionist frowned. "Mrs. White, you can usually request those online—"

"I need the physical file," I interrupted, keeping my voice flat. "Right now. I have an appointment with a new specialist this afternoon."

She hesitated, then nodded. "Give me twenty minutes."

They put me in a small, empty consultation room down the hall. The walls were painted a pale, sterile green. A paper roll crinkled on the examination table.

When the nurse brought the thick manila folder, she gave me an apologetic smile. "Dr. Kelly is in surgery, but here is the archived archive from your stay."

"Thank you, Brenda," I said, reading her name tag.

She closed the door behind her.

I sat down at the small laminate desk and opened the file.

The first few pages were standard. Blood pressure logs. Intake questionnaires. But as I flipped toward the prenatal care section, things began to look wrong.

There were two sets of lab results from the twelfth week. The first page showed normal hormone levels. The second page, filed three days later, showed a sudden, catastrophic drop. The doctor's signature on the second page was slightly off—the slant was too steep, the ink too heavy. It was a forgery.

Then I turned to the medication history.

Dawson had insisted on picking up my prenatal vitamins back then. He had brought them home in unmarked brown bottles, telling me his friend ran a specialty compounding pharmacy in Midtown. *Only the purest nutrients for my wife and baby,* he had said with a loving smile.

I looked at the toxic screen done the night of my miscarriage.

Buried in the back of the file was an addendum from the hospital lab. Traces of high-dose methotrexate had been detected in my system. It was a medication used for autoimmune diseases—and used to terminate early pregnancies.

Next to the result was a handwritten note from an outside physician I had never met: *Patient confirmed accidental ingestion of discarded medication from family member. Case closed.*

I had never taken that medication. I had never spoken to that doctor.

Dawson had swapped my pills.

They had fed me poison in my own home. They had killed my baby to protect their claim to my father's company.

The room grew very quiet. The hum of the fluorescent lights overhead sounded like a high, continuous scream.

I didn't cry. My hands didn't shake.

I sat at that desk for twenty-two minutes without moving a single muscle. The pain inside me broke, scattered, and froze solid. The woman who made excuses for people was gone. In her place was something carved out of ice.

I pulled out my phone.

One by one, I laid the pages flat. The toxic screen. The forged signature. The prescription logs. I photographed every single sheet with clear, focused shots.

When I finished, I put the papers back neatly in the folder and closed it.

I walked out to the desk.

"All done," I said calmly. "Thank you for your help, Brenda."

"Have a good day, Mrs. White," Brenda smiled.

I walked out into the cold New York air and raised my hand for a cab. The city moved around me in a blur of yellow taxis and gray concrete.

I got into the back seat and looked out the window.

*They took my child,* I thought.

And now, I was going to take everything they had.
