Chapter 3

I chose a diner deep in Brooklyn. It had sticky vinyl booths, neon signs that buzzed, and the smell of burnt bacon. Nobody from our circle would ever be seen here.

Across the small table sat Victor Hale. He wore an ordinary wool coat and glasses with thin silver frames. He was the best corporate fraud attorney in the state, but right now, he just looked like an accountant having lunch.

I slid a thick envelope across the Formica table.

"Take your time," I said.

Victor opened it. He didn't say a word. He looked at the Le Ciel receipt from Valentine’s Day. Then the printed screenshot of Kaeli’s dessert post with the matching timestamp. Then the photos from the nail salon in SoHo—Dawson’s hand over hers, their heads bent close.

Next were the bank records from Dawson's hidden desk drawer. Wire transfers to the Cayman Islands. Shell company shell games. Massive tax fraud under Carpenter Industries’ name.

Finally, he reached the medical file from Mount Sinai. The forged doctor's signature on the second lab test. The toxic screen showing high doses of methotrexate in my bloodstream.

The diner clattered around us. A waitress dropped a fork two booths over. Victor turned the final page. His jaw clenched, just once.

"Methotrexate," Victor whispered. He looked up at me. "He poisoned your vitamins."

"Yes." My voice was totally steady. "He wanted to make sure my father's trust never passed to an heir."

Victor set the papers down. He laced his fingers together. "You've already done most of my job. Now let me do the rest."

"What do I do?" I asked.

"Nothing," he said firmly. "You go home. You make dinner. You smile when he kisses your cheek. If he suspects for one second that you know, he’ll liquidate the remaining accounts and bolt. Act normal. Absolute secrecy."

I nodded once. "Understood."

The next morning, I went to work while Dawson was at the gym.

I bought an external hard drive and systematically duplicated every hidden file from his home computer. I scanned every offshore statement, every fake invoice. Then I drove to a Midtown bank I had never used in my life. I rented a safe deposit box under my maiden name: *Alina Carpenter*.

I locked the drives, the photos, and the original medical documents inside.

Victor moved fast. By that afternoon, he had already hired a top forensic document expert to examine the forged doctor’s signature on my hospital charts. By that evening, Victor filed preliminary, sealed reports with the NYPD’s financial crimes unit. An hour later, he initiated contact with the white-collar division at the FBI.

Both agencies opened parallel investigations under strict operational secrecy. They gave it a code name. They told Victor to let Dawson keep digging his own grave.

That night, Dawson came home smelling of expensive cologne and Kaeli’s citrus lotion.

"Tough day at the office, honey," he sighed, kissing my temple.

I looked at him. I looked right into his handsome, lying eyes.

"I'm sorry, babe," I said softly, handing him a glass of scotch. "Sit down. I'll get dinner."

He smiled, completely blind to the trap closing around him.

Two days later, we held an executive board meeting at Carpenter Industries. Dawson sat near the head of the mahogany table, charming the room, tossing out buzzwords about restructuring and asset reallocation. I sat across from him with a tablet in my hands, taking notes, quiet as a ghost.

When the meeting adjourned, the room cleared out. Dawson hurried down the hall to take a call in his private suite.

A heavy hand touched my shoulder.

"Alina," a quiet voice said. "Do you have a minute?"

It was Donald Holmes.

I followed the veteran CFO down the corridor to his corner office. It was a space frozen in time. The walls were lined with thirty years of company history, framed newspaper clippings, and brass plaques. Behind his desk hung a faded photo from Carpenter Industries’ tenth anniversary. In the picture, Donald and my late father were shaking hands, both grinning wide. The frame was slightly crooked, just like it had been for twenty years.

Donald shut the door and turned the lock. The room went silent.

He didn't ask how I was doing. He walked behind his desk, opened the bottom drawer of his iron filing cabinet, and pulled out a thick manila folder. He dropped it on the desk in front of me with a heavy thud.

"Look through it," Donald said.

I opened the folder. Inside were two solid years of internal audit trails. Discrepancies in accounts payable. Flagged transfers that Dawson had tried to scrub from the central servers.

"Dawson thought he erased these," Donald said. His voice was rough, like gravel ground between stones. "He thought I was just an old fool who didn't understand the new software. But I kept physical backups of every single altered ledger."

I stared at the paperwork. "Why didn't you show me this before, Donald?"

"Because you were grieving your father," he said gently. "And because you loved him. I had the numbers, but without you willing to look at them, Dawson would have fired me and buried the truth."

He reached out and tapped the glass of my father’s framed picture.

"Your father built this company with his hands," Donald said, his voice cracking with old grief and fierce pride. "He always said you were the one who'd take it further."

My throat tightened, but I didn't let a single tear fall.

I pulled the folder close against my chest. I looked Donald straight in the eyes and gave him a single, hard nod.

I didn't need to say a word. He knew the war had already started.
