Chapter 2

I sat in my apartment the next morning with my laptop open and a cup of black coffee going cold beside me. The sun came through the window in a hard white line. I hadn't slept. I didn't need to.

I logged into an account I hadn't touched in two years. @nathancooperdaily. Verified. Three million followers. They thought it was run by a fan. Some obsessed girl who tracked his every move. They were right about the obsessed part. Wrong about everything else.

I'd built this account when Nathan was nobody. Posted his headshots. Hyped his student films. Turned him into someone people noticed before he ever booked a real job. He used to kiss my forehead and call it 'our little secret weapon.' Then he stopped mentioning it. Then he stopped mentioning me.

I opened a folder on my desktop. Seven years of files. Receipts. Contracts. Messages. Photos. I'd kept everything. Not because I planned this. Because I couldn't let go.

Now I was letting go.

I started writing.

*Thread: The Truth About Nathan Cooper.*

*1/ You know him as a self-made actor. A talent who came from nothing. That's the story he tells. It's not the truth.*

I attached a photo. Nathan at twenty-four, holding a check for fifty thousand dollars. My family trust's logo in the corner. The memo line: 'Production funding — The Long Year.' His first indie film. The one that got him noticed.

*2/ Every major opportunity Nathan Cooper received in the last seven years was funded by the same source. Me.*

I posted a spreadsheet. Line by line. Film funding. PR retainers. Coaching fees. Headshot sessions. Travel expenses for festival circuits. The total at the bottom: $1.8 million.

*3/ I managed his auditions. I rewrote his scripts. I ghost-edited every interview answer he ever gave. He called me his 'good luck charm.' He never called me his wife.*

I attached a screenshot of our marriage certificate. Filed seven years ago. Witnessed by a courthouse clerk and my father's lawyer. Private. Secret. His idea.

*4/ Here's Nathan with Lana Ortiz. January 14th. We were still married. He told me he was at a 'career development retreat.' He wasn't.*

The photo showed them outside a Malibu beach house. Her hand in his. His mouth on her neck. I'd found it on a private Instagram story one of Lana's friends posted and deleted. I'd saved it. I saved everything.

*5/ Here's another. March 22nd. Another 'retreat.' Another lie.*

*6/ And another. April 3rd. The night before he won the Golden Globe. I was home alone watching the livestream. He was with her.*

I posted fifteen photos. Timestamped. Geotagged. Irrefutable.

*7/ Nathan Cooper is not self-made. He is not honest. He is not the man you think he is. But you deserve to know who you've been cheering for.*

*8/ I'm done being invisible.*

I hit post.

Then I closed the laptop and finished my coffee.

My phone started buzzing ten minutes later. Texts. Calls. Notifications. I turned it face down and walked to the window.

The city looked the same as it always did. Bright. Loud. Indifferent.

I wasn't indifferent anymore.

By noon, the thread had two million views. By two p.m., #NathanCooperIsOver was trending nationwide. By four p.m., his agency released a statement. *'We are reviewing the situation and will respond appropriately.'* By six p.m., they'd dropped him.

I watched it happen in real time. Sponsors pulled their campaigns. Talk shows canceled his bookings. A late-night host made a joke about him during the monologue. The audience laughed.

I didn't laugh. I just watched.

Marcus called at seven. 'You broke the internet.'

'Good,' I said.

'Your father wants to see you. Tomorrow morning. His office.'

'I'll be there.'

I hung up and opened my laptop again. The replies were still pouring in. Some people called me bitter. Some called me brave. Most just wanted more.

I gave them more.

I posted the messages Nathan sent me the week after he won the Critics' Choice. *'You're suffocating me, Ellie. I need space.'* I'd asked him if he wanted to have dinner. That was suffocating.

I posted the email chain where I negotiated his contract for *The Long Year.* He'd signed his name. I'd done everything else.

I posted a video I'd taken three years ago. Nathan practicing his award speech in our living room. He'd thanked his 'team' and his 'supporters' and 'everyone who believed in him.' He didn't say my name once. I was standing behind the camera.

The internet ate it up.

By midnight, Lana's Instagram comments were a wasteland. *Homewrecker. Fake. You knew.* She posted a statement. *'I don't respond to negativity. I'm focused on my work.'* Her comments got worse.

I didn't feel good. I didn't feel bad. I just felt clear.

I went to bed at two a.m. and slept through the night for the first time in a week.

When I woke up, Nathan had tried to call me sixteen times. I deleted the notifications without listening.

My father's office was on the fifty-fourth floor of a building in Midtown. Floor-to-ceiling windows. View of the park. I'd been here a hundred times as a kid. It still felt like stepping into a cathedral.

Deacon was standing by the window when I walked in. He turned and looked at me. His face was calm. He didn't smile.

'Sit,' he said.

I sat.

He stayed standing. 'You handle the public,' he said quietly. 'I handle the rest.'

I blinked. 'What does that mean?'

'It means Nathan Cooper will never work in this industry again. Not in front of the camera. Not behind it. Not in any capacity where my name or my network has influence.' He paused. 'Which is everywhere.'

I stared at him. 'Dad—'

'You spent seven years building him,' he said. 'I spent seven years watching you disappear. That's over now.'

He walked to his desk and picked up a folder. He set it in front of me. I opened it.

Legal filings. Breach of contract claims. Frozen royalty payments. A list of studios, agencies, and distributors—every one marked with a red line through Nathan's name.

'I didn't ask you to do this,' I said.

He looked at me. His eyes were steady. 'You're my daughter. You don't have to ask.'

I closed the folder. My throat felt tight.

'Thank you,' I whispered.

He nodded once. Then he sat down across from me. 'Now,' he said. 'Let's talk about what comes next.'
