After My Husband Chose My Stepsister’s Baby Over Me Novel Cover

After My Husband Chose My Stepsister’s Baby Over Me

The corporate boardroom became a chamber of torment. For two agonizing hours, I watched my husband, Lincoln, present my hard-won strategies as his own, his polished demeanor masking the theft of my late-night labor. As stress tore through my body, a room of men applauded my stolen genius. Faking a migraine, I escaped the corporate charade early, returning to a silent penthouse greeted only by his discarded shoes—and the bitter realization of his ultimate betrayal.

Chapter 4

Day three. Evening. My phone lit up with Lincoln's name.

I answered. His face filled the screen — tanned, relaxed, backlit by golden hour. Behind him, the Santorini caldera stretched out in impossible blues. A wine glass sat on the table beside him. He was smiling.

"Hey," he said. "Just wanted to check in."

"How's the trip?"

"Incredible. The villa's perfect. Amalia's resting now, but she loves it." He took a sip of wine. "How are things there?"

"Fine," I said. "Everything's fine."

"No fires to put out?"

"Nothing I can't handle."

He laughed. Relieved. "I knew I could count on you. We're thinking of extending another week. The doctor said the relaxation is good for the baby."

"That sounds good."

A hand appeared at the edge of the frame. Pale fingers on his shoulder. Amalia's voice, soft and sleepy: "Lincoln? Come back to bed."

He glanced away from the camera. Smiled. Looked back at me. "I should go. Love you."

"Love you too," I said.

The screen went dark.

I sat there for a moment. Then I opened my laptop.

The dashboard loaded. I scrolled through the transaction log. The villa charge had cleared. Forty-two thousand. Three days ago, Lincoln had used the corporate card for a private chef. Yesterday, a jewelry purchase in Mykonos. Eighteen thousand.

I opened the credit line summary. Did the math.

In forty-eight hours, the accounts would be overdrawn by three months of operating capital.

I closed the laptop. Pressed my thumb against my wrist.

Two days left.

The next morning, I drove to Margaret Ellison's office. Midtown. Fourteenth floor. The kind of place that charged by the minute and never apologized for it.

Margaret was waiting. Silver hair pulled back. Sharp gray suit. She'd been my mother's attorney for twenty years. The woman who drafted the trust. The woman who knew every clause, every contingency, every weapon my mother had built into the structure.

She gestured to the chair across from her desk. I sat.

"Day Four," she said. Not a question.

"Day Four."

She opened a folder. Slid a document across the desk. "Final extraction sequence. Nine AM, Day Six. Every account severs simultaneously. Every credit line closes. Every asset tied to the trust reverts to the estate, which transfers to you as sole beneficiary."

I scanned the document. My mother's architecture. Precise. Unambiguous. Devastating.

"They won't have warning?" I asked.

"None. The system is automated. By the time anyone realizes what's happening, it will be complete."

I signed the authorization. Slid it back.

Margaret watched me for a moment. Then she reached into her desk drawer. Pulled out an envelope. Cream paper. My mother's handwriting on the front: For Sienna. To be opened on the day she activates the clause.

"She wrote this seven years ago," Margaret said quietly. "The day she finalized the trust."

I took the envelope. Held it.

Margaret stood. Extended her hand. I shook it.

"Your mother," she said, "was the smartest person I ever met. And she loved you more than anything."

I nodded. Couldn't speak.

I left the office. Sat in my car in the parking garage. Opened the envelope.

One page. My mother's handwriting. Precise. Unadorned. Exactly like her.

Sienna—

If you're reading this, it means you've activated the clause. It means things went wrong. I'm sorry. I hoped they wouldn't.

I built the trust to protect you. Not from the world. From the people who would mistake your strength for an infinite resource.

Your father is weak. He loves you, but he will always choose the path that makes him comfortable. Lincoln—I don't know yet what he'll become. But I know you saved him once. And I know that people who are saved sometimes resent the person who did the saving.

The clause is there if you need it. I hope you won't. But I know you, and I know you'll know when.

You are my daughter. You are brilliant. You are stronger than you think. And you deserve a life that is yours.

Build it.

Love,

Mom

I folded the letter. Pressed it against my chest.

Then I placed it in the black lacquered box I'd prepared for her ashes. Closed the lid.

Started the car.

Drove to the county clerk's office.

The building was gray. Fluorescent. Bureaucratic. I took a number. Waited.

When they called me, I approached the counter. A tired woman in her fifties looked up.

"I need to file a legal name change," I said.

"Current name?"

"Sienna Harris."

"New name?"

"Sienna Carlson."

She typed it in. Printed the forms. Slid them across the counter. "Sign here. Here. And here."

I signed.

She stamped the documents. "Effective immediately. You'll receive the official certificate in two weeks."

"Thank you," I said.

I walked out. Sat in my car.

Stared at the forms in my lap.

Sienna Carlson.

My mother's name.

My name.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist until the pressure turned white.

Then I drove home.

One day left.
