Chapter 5

I woke up before dawn. The date on my phone said November seventh. Five years since my mother died.

I didn't tell anyone I was going. Didn't leave a note. Just got in my car and drove.

The highway was empty. Gray light spreading across the sky. I knew the route without thinking. Exit 47. Left at the gas station. Two miles on the gravel road. The hill.

I parked at the gates. Walked up.

Plot 47-A was at the top. The place where morning light came first. Where my mother said she wanted to wake up.

I reached the crest of the hill.

Stopped.

The ground was empty.

Freshly turned earth. Dark soil. A new marker where my mother's headstone used to be. I walked closer. Read the name.

Elena Vasquez.

Amalia's mother.

I stood there. The wind moved through the trees. Somewhere a bird called. The cemetery didn't care. The world kept turning.

I looked around. Scanned the hillside. Found the groundskeeper's office at the bottom of the slope. Walked down.

An old man sat inside. He looked up when I knocked.

"Help you?"

"Opal Carlson," I said. "Plot 47-A. Where is she now?"

He checked his log. Ran his finger down the page. "Relocated yesterday. North corner. Plot 12-C."

"Show me."

He led me across the cemetery. Away from the hill. Past the old section. Past the chapel. To a corner I'd never seen before.

It was dark. North-facing. A maintenance shed blocked the morning light. The grass was patchy. The ground uneven.

My mother's headstone was there. Hastily reinstalled. Already dirty.

Opal Carlson. Beloved wife and mother.

The groundskeeper shifted behind me. "Anything else?"

"No," I said.

He left.

I knelt in the grass. Pressed my hand against the stone. It was cold.

My mother chose the hilltop. Drove me out here when she could barely stand. Walked up that slope in her coat and scarf and said the light was perfect. Said she wanted to wake up to it.

And my father moved her. For a woman who wasn't his wife. For a daughter who wasn't me.

He didn't ask. Didn't wait. Just did it.

I stayed there for a long time. The sun rose behind the maintenance shed. No light reached the grave.

I thought about calling him. Screaming. Demanding he explain.

But I didn't.

Because I finally understood.

This wasn't a mistake. This wasn't thoughtlessness. This was exactly who he was. Who he'd always been.

A man who loved me and betrayed me anyway.

A man who would desecrate his dead wife's resting place and sleep fine that night.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Counted.

Then I stood up. Walked back to my car. Made a call.

"Whitman Funeral Services."

"I need an immediate exhumation," I said. "Private. Legal. Today."

A pause. "That's highly irregular—"

"I'm the next of kin. I have the authority. How much?"

Another pause. "Fifteen thousand. Cash."

"I'll be there in an hour."

I drove to the funeral home. Signed the papers. Wired the money. They met me back at the cemetery at noon with the equipment.

It took three hours.

I stood there the whole time. Watched them work. Didn't look away.

When they handed me the black lacquered box, I held it against my chest.

"I'm sorry, Mom," I whispered. "I'm bringing you home."

I placed the box on the passenger seat. Buckled it in.

Drove back to Manhattan as the sun set.

One day left.

I reached the penthouse at midnight. The lights were off. Lincoln was still in Santorini. The place was empty.

I moved through the rooms like a ghost. My clothing. My mother's poetry book. The small things that mattered. I'd packed most of it three days ago. Two bags. That was all.

I carried them to the foyer. Went to Lincoln's study.

Opened my bag. Pulled out the divorce agreement I'd signed yesterday. Set it on his desk.

Found a Post-it note. Wrote three words.

We're done.

Stuck it to the first page.

I looked around the study. The Forbes profile on the wall. The awards. The framed photos of Lincoln shaking hands with investors. Closing deals. Ringing bells.

None of it was real.

All of it was me.

I turned off the light. Walked out.

Picked up my bags. My mother's ashes. Took the elevator down.

Got in my car.

Drove to Brooklyn. To the apartment I'd rented two weeks ago under my new name. Sienna Carlson.

I carried everything upstairs. Set my mother's ashes on the windowsill where the morning light would find her.

Sat on the floor. Pressed my thumb against my wrist.

Tomorrow, the accounts would drain. The empire would collapse. Lincoln would come home to nothing.

But tonight, I was already gone.

I looked at my mother's ashes. The black lacquered box catching the streetlight.

"It's done," I whispered. "We're free."
