Chapter 3

I came home from the hospital and slept for three hours. When I woke up, the penthouse was empty. Lincoln had left a note on the kitchen counter. Meeting with investors. Back tonight.

I made tea. Sat at the counter. Opened my laptop.

For seven years, I'd maintained a system. Every corporate expense ran through a flagging protocol I'd built into the trust fund's disbursement structure. Anything over ten thousand dollars triggered a review. Anything unusual got a call. I'd stopped three potential audits, five creditor alerts, and one SEC inquiry before they became problems.

Nobody knew. Not Lincoln. Not Victor Hale. Not the board.

They thought the money just flowed.

I opened the monitoring dashboard. Looked at the active flags. Twelve pending reviews. I cleared them all without reading them. Then I went into the settings and disabled the alert system entirely.

The screen went blank except for one line: Manual review required for all transactions.

I closed the laptop.

Lincoln came home at seven. He was smiling. That loose, energized smile he got when a meeting went well. He kissed my cheek. Poured himself scotch.

"Good day?" I asked.

"Great day. Amalia and I were talking. With the baby coming, we should do something special. A babymoon. Before she shows too much."

I sipped my tea. "That sounds nice."

He sat down across from me. "I was thinking Europe. Santorini, maybe Amalfi. Two weeks. She's never been."

"You should go," I said. "You've both earned it."

He blinked. "You're okay with that?"

"Of course. When are you thinking?"

"Next week. I'll book it tonight."

"First class," I said. "Don't cut corners. This is important."

He stared at me for a moment. Then his face softened. He reached across and squeezed my hand. "Thank you. I knew you'd understand."

I squeezed back.

That night, I heard him on the phone in his study. Booking flights. Hotels. A private villa in Santorini with an infinity pool. He laughed at something the travel agent said. Gave his corporate card number without hesitation.

I went to bed early. Took my medication. Pressed my thumb against my wrist until I fell asleep.

Four days left.

The next morning, my father found me in the kitchen.

He poured himself coffee. Sat down. He had that look he always got when he was about to ask for something. Apologetic before he even started.

"Sienna," he said. "I need to talk to you about something sensitive."

I waited.

"Amalia's mother is dying," he said quietly. "Lung cancer. She has maybe a month."

"I'm sorry to hear that."

He nodded. Sipped his coffee. "She's been talking about arrangements. Where she wants to be buried. She asked for somewhere with a view. Somewhere peaceful."

I set my tea down. Looked at him.

"I was thinking," he said slowly, "about the Connecticut cemetery. Where your mother is. That hilltop plot. The morning light there is extraordinary."

My thumb found my wrist.

"Your mother's remains could be relocated," he continued. "There's a quieter section. More private. Your mother was never sentimental about things like that. She was practical. She'd understand."

I pressed harder. The pressure turned white.

"It would mean a lot to Amalia," he said. "To have her mother near family. Near us."

"Near you," I said.

He blinked. "Near all of us."

I picked up my tea. Took a sip. It had gone cold.

"I'll think about it," I said.

Relief flooded his face. "Thank you, sweetheart. I knew you'd understand. You've always been so reasonable."

He stood. Kissed the top of my head. Left the kitchen humming.

I sat there for a long time.

Then I opened my phone. Scrolled to a contact I hadn't used in years. The Connecticut cemetery's administrative office.

A woman answered. "Hillcrest Memorial, how can I help you?"

"This is Sienna Carlson. My mother, Opal Carlson, is interred in plot 47-A. I need to confirm the deed holder."

A pause. Typing. "That would be Francisco Mendez."

"And can the deed holder authorize relocation without my consent?"

"Yes, ma'am. The deed holder has full authority over the plot."

"Thank you," I said.

I ended the call.

Stared at the phone.

My mother chose that plot herself. Drove me out there six weeks before she died. Stood on the hill in her coat and scarf, too thin already, and said, "The light here is perfect. I want to wake up to this."

I said, "You're not waking up, Mom."

She smiled. "You know what I mean."

I did.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist until the skin went numb.

Three days left.

That afternoon, Lincoln's assistant called. "Mrs. Harris? Mr. Harris wanted me to confirm the villa reservation. The charge is forty-two thousand for two weeks. Should I proceed?"

"Yes," I said. "Proceed."

"Thank you, ma'am."

I hung up.

Opened my laptop. Checked the account balance. Watched the number drop.

Didn't flag it. Didn't call anyone. Didn't fix it.

Just watched.

That night, I drove out to Connecticut. Alone. Music off. Windows down.

I parked at the cemetery gates just before they closed. Walked up the hill to plot 47-A.

My mother's headstone was simple. Opal Carlson. Beloved wife and mother. The dates.

I knelt in the grass. Pressed my hand against the stone.

The light was golden. Extraordinary. Exactly the way she said.

"Three more days," I whispered. "Then I'm bringing you home."

I stayed until the groundskeeper told me they were closing.

Drove back to Manhattan in the dark.

Lincoln was already asleep when I got home. I stood in the doorway of his room for a long time. Watched him breathe.

Then I went to my room. Took my medication. Lay down.

Pressed my thumb against my wrist until I couldn't feel it anymore.

Three days left.
