After My Husband Chose My Stepsister’s Baby Over Me

The corporate boardroom became a chamber of torment. Chapter 2

I made it to the bedroom before my stomach turned inside out.

The bathroom tile was cold under my knees. I gripped the sink edge. Counted breaths. The pain came in waves, sharp and familiar. When I spit, there was blood in the saliva.

I rinsed my mouth. Wiped the counter. Opened the medicine cabinet and took two of the pills Dr. Martinez prescribed three months ago. Swallowed them dry.

Waited.

Ten minutes. The pain didn't stop. It got worse.

I changed into clean clothes. Put my wallet and phone in my bag. Walked through the penthouse like I was leaving for a meeting. Lincoln's bedroom door was closed. Light underneath. I didn't knock.

The garage was quiet. I got in my car and drove to Mount Sinai.

The ER intake nurse looked up when I approached. "Name?"

"Carlson," I said. "Sienna Carlson."

She typed it in. Didn't blink. I'd been doing this for two years now. Using my mother's name. Easier that way. No calls to Lincoln. No concerned texts. No performance of care that would evaporate by morning.

"Same issue as last time?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Room three. Someone will be with you shortly."

I sat on the exam table. The paper crinkled under me. The fluorescent lights hummed. I pressed my thumb against my wrist and counted.

Twenty-three.

This was the twenty-third time in seven years.

The first time was three months after the wedding. Lincoln had a pitch meeting that went badly. He came home and didn't speak for two days. I fixed it. Called in favors. Restructured the proposal. Got him a second meeting. He got the deal. That night, my stomach started bleeding. I drove myself here at four in the morning. Got an IV. Went home. Made him breakfast.

He never knew.

None of them ever knew.

The doctor came in. Dr. Patel. I'd seen her before. She reviewed my chart without looking surprised. "You're back."

"I'm back."

She examined me. Asked the same questions. Stress level. Eating schedule. Sleep. I gave the same answers. She ordered the same tests.

They hooked me up to an IV. Saline and something for the pain. I lay back on the thin pillow and stared at the ceiling tiles.

The memory came without permission.

Midtown. Seven years ago. The rooftop of a building Lincoln's startup had rented before everything collapsed. Two in the morning. I'd gotten his text—just the address, nothing else—and I knew.

He was standing at the edge when I found him. Dress shirt untucked. Shoes off. Looking down at Forty-Second Street like it was a solution.

"Lincoln," I said.

He didn't turn around. "There's nothing left."

I walked closer. Slow. My heart was beating so hard I thought he'd hear it. "There's me."

He turned then. His face was wrecked. "I lost everything. The investors pulled out. My co-founders quit. I can't even pay my rent."

"I have money," I said.

"Sienna—"

"I have forty-seven thousand in savings. It's yours."

He stared at me. "I can't take that."

"Yes, you can." I held out my hand. "Come down. We'll figure it out."

He looked at my hand for a long time. Then he took it.

I wired him the money from a coffee shop at three AM. He cried. I held him. He said he'd spend his whole life repaying me.

Six weeks later, we got married.

I opened my eyes. The IV drip was half-empty. The memory sat in my chest like a stone.

I used to think that night was the beginning of us. The moment I saved him. The moment he became mine.

But lying here now, I could see it differently.

I could see the first board meeting after my mother's trust fund started flowing. Lincoln at the head of the table. Victor Hale and the other executives congratulating him on the Brennan deal. The deal I'd structured. The terms I'd negotiated. The contract I'd stayed up three nights drafting.

Lincoln stood there and accepted their praise. Straightened his cufflinks. Smiled.

I was sitting at the far end of the table. He didn't look at me once.

I'd smiled. Said nothing. Told myself it didn't matter.

That was the moment.

Not the rooftop. The boardroom.

The man I saved on that rooftop died the moment he decided my work was his vision. The moment he let other men congratulate him for my labor and didn't correct them.

What I'd been married to for seven years wasn't Lincoln Harris.

It was a ghost. Wearing his face. Consuming my life.

Dr. Patel came back in. "Your levels are stable. You can go home. But Sienna—" She looked at me with that expression doctors get when they know you won't listen. "This is the fourth time this year. Whatever is causing this stress, you need to remove it."

"I know," I said.

She didn't believe me. She discharged me anyway.

I drove home as the sun came up. The city looked clean in the early light. Gold and glass. Promises everywhere.

I parked in the garage. Sat in the car with the engine off.

Five days left.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist until the pressure turned white.

Then I went upstairs. Made coffee. Put on my suit. Went to the office like nothing had happened.

Because nothing had.

Not yet.
