Chapter 2

The Howell Group tower was all glass and cold light. Forty-two floors above Midtown, the corner office looked out over a city that had no idea I existed.

That was about to change.

Rory Daniels was already standing when I walked in. No handshake. No smile. He just looked at me the way you look at a problem you're deciding how to solve — direct, unhurried, giving nothing away.

He was taller than the headshot suggested. Dark eyes. The kind of stillness that didn't come from calm. It came from control.

"Ms. Howell." He gestured to the chair across from his. "Sit down. We have a lot to cover."

No *welcome*. No *I'm so glad you're here*. No soft landing.

I sat down.

He opened a bound document and slid it across the desk. Thirty pages. Tabbed. Color-coded. A transition roadmap with a thirty-day timeline broken into phases — organizational restructuring, media positioning, board alignment, three pending acquisitions that needed decisions in the next two weeks.

"I'll walk you through the framework," he said. "Stop me if something doesn't track."

He talked fast. Not to impress me — just because he didn't see the point in going slow. I kept up. I'd spent eleven years invisible at dinner parties full of men like the ones on these org charts. I knew how they thought. I knew what they hid.

We got to page seven.

I stopped him.

"This revenue projection for the Caldwell acquisition." I tapped the number. "It's using a pre-restructuring EBITDA figure. The subsidiary renegotiated two union contracts in March. The adjusted number is lower by about eleven percent. Your whole valuation model shifts."

Silence.

Not the uncomfortable kind. The kind where someone is recalculating.

Rory looked at the page. Then he looked at me. It lasted maybe two seconds. But it was different from the way he'd looked at me when I walked in.

"I'll have the team pull the revised contracts," he said.

"I already have them." I slid my copy across the desk. "I read the full due diligence file last night."

Another beat.

Then he picked up the contracts and kept going.

He didn't compliment me. Didn't make a thing of it. Just adjusted and moved forward like I'd simply confirmed what he'd already suspected.

I decided I could work with that.

---

The board meeting was three days later.

Twelve people around a table that probably cost more than my first apartment. Dark suits. Silver hair. Faces that had spent decades deciding who was worth their time.

Dominic Hargrove sat at the far end. Sixty-seven. Thirty years on the board. He waited until the introductions were done and then folded his hands on the table.

"I'll be direct," he said. "I have nothing against you personally, Ms. Howell. But this board has to ask the question. You've been out of any professional capacity for over a decade. What exactly qualifies you to lead a company of this scale?"

The room didn't move. They were waiting to see if I'd apologize. Deflect. Smile and say something gracious about having a lot to learn.

I let the silence sit for exactly long enough.

Then I opened the acquisition brief in front of me and turned to page four.

"The Meridian deal on the table right now," I said. "Everyone in this room has been looking at the parent company's numbers. But Meridian has a subsidiary — Greyfield Logistics — that took on a variable-rate debt structure in 2021. Rates have moved significantly since then. Their actual debt service obligation is thirty-two million higher than what's reflected in this brief. We close at the current offer price, we're absorbing a liability this team hasn't priced in."

I looked up.

"That's what qualifies me."

Dominic's pen had stopped moving.

No one said anything for a long moment. Then Rory, seated to my right, turned a page in his notebook. That was all. But I caught the slight shift at the corner of his mouth.

---

We closed the Meridian deal six days later. I flew to Chicago for the final session. Rory sat across from their lead counsel for four hours and didn't blink once. I handled the principals directly. We walked out with the terms we wanted.

On the flight back, I was tired in the good way. The way that meant something had been built.

Rory was writing in that worn notebook he always carried. I watched the city lights disappear below the clouds.

"Hargrove voted yes," I said.

"He did."

"Did that surprise you?"

Rory looked up. "No. He respects competence. He was just waiting to see if you had any."

"And?"

"He got his answer on page four."

I laughed. It came out before I could stop it — real and a little tired and not particularly dignified.

Rory looked at me.

Not the way he'd looked at me on day one. Not the way he'd looked at the contracts on page seven. Something quieter. Something that lasted a half-second too long before he turned back to his notebook.

I noticed it.

I didn't say anything about it.

But I noticed.
