After My Husband Chose My Best Friend at His Gala Chapter 1

The rooftop glittered like something out of a magazine.

Two hundred people. White tablecloths. Champagne that cost more per bottle than most people's rent. Manhattan spread out below us in every direction, all those lit windows like a city pretending it never slept.

I stood near the bar in a navy dress I'd spent two weeks choosing. Greyson had said navy was his favorite color on me. I'd remembered that. I'd remembered everything.

He took the microphone at 9:47. I know because I'd just checked my phone.

The room quieted the way rooms do when someone important speaks. Greyson had that gift — he always had it. The ability to make a room lean in.

"Tonight means everything to me," he said. His voice was warm. Easy. The voice I'd fallen asleep next to for eleven years. "And I couldn't let this moment pass without acknowledging the person who made it all possible."

I smiled. I actually smiled.

"Simone." He looked across the room. "You saw what I was capable of before I saw it myself. You pushed me. You believed in me. I love you. I think I've loved you for a long time."

The room made a sound. A collective inhale, soft and sharp at the same time.

I didn't move.

Simone stood twenty feet away in a red dress. My best friend. The woman I'd called from the hospital when Eli was born because I needed to hear her voice. She pressed her hand to her mouth. Her eyes were wet. She looked genuinely moved.

She'd had a lot of practice.

I set my champagne glass down on the bar behind me. Very carefully. Very quietly. The crystal made a small clean sound against the marble.

That was the last thing I felt — the cold stem of that glass leaving my fingers.

Then Eli was beside me.

He was fourteen. He had Greyson's jaw and my eyes, and right now those eyes were flat in a way that didn't belong on a boy his age. He'd been coached. I could hear it in the steadiness of his voice.

"You should just leave," he said. "You were never really part of this family."

Greyson's words. Greyson's cadence. Delivered by my son's mouth.

I looked at him for one long moment. I thought about the drawings he used to leave under my coffee cup on Saturday mornings. His name in crayon. Little stick figures of the two of us.

I thought about the box in my closet where I still kept every one.

I didn't say anything. There was nothing to say to a boy reciting lines he didn't write.

I turned and walked through the crowd. People moved aside. I kept my chin level, my hands loose at my sides, my face completely still. Someone said my name. I didn't stop.

The elevator. The lobby. The revolving door.

And then the sidewalk.

New York City at night sounds like a machine that never learned to rest. Cabs. Voices. A siren somewhere distant. The air smelled like exhaust and something sweet from a food cart on the corner.

I stood there and I let myself have three minutes.

Not to cry. I didn't cry. I just stood there and felt the exact shape of what had happened — the way you press a bruise to understand how deep it goes.

Eleven years. Every dinner party. Every work trip I'd managed alone. Every time I'd swallowed the words *I could just call my father and end your career* and smiled instead because I wanted him to love me for what I actually was.

Three minutes.

Then I took out my phone and called my father.

He picked up on the second ring.

"Dad." My voice was steady. I was proud of that. "I'm ready."

A pause. Just a breath.

"I'll have the car there in ten minutes," he said.

---

I signed the divorce papers the next morning without reading them twice.

Greyson's attorney kept glancing at me like he was waiting for a counteroffer. Greyson sat across the table with that flushed, barely-contained energy of a man who'd just won something. He thought my silence was surrender.

I didn't correct him.

I signed. I stood. I left.

---

My father's penthouse on the Upper East Side smelled like old books and the particular kind of quiet that only money can buy.

Nicholas Howell stood when I walked in. He was sixty-three and still looked like a man no one argued with twice. He didn't ask if I was sure. He didn't say *I told you so.* He just looked at me the way he always had — like I was the most important thing in the room and also the most capable of handling whatever came next.

"There's someone I want you to meet," he said. "Before anything else."

He slid a dossier across the desk.

I sat down and opened it.

*Rory Daniels. Executive Strategist.* An MBA from Wharton. A list of companies restructured, deals closed, crises quietly averted. The kind of résumé that looked almost too clean — like someone had built it with a specific purpose in mind.

A single headshot. Dark eyes. A face that gave nothing away.

I read every page in silence while my father waited.

Outside, Manhattan hummed on without me.

I closed the file.

"When do I meet him?"
