Chapter 3

I didn't announce it. I didn't send a message. I didn't even say the names out loud.

I just started pulling threads.

The first week, I sat with Howell Group's legal team for three hours and mapped every point of contact between our subsidiaries and Alvarez Holdings. There were more than I expected. Catering contracts. A logistics partnership. A shared investor in a real estate fund. Small things, mostly. The kind of connections that accumulate over years without anyone noticing how load-bearing they've become.

I noticed.

I rerouted the catering contract to a competing firm on Tuesday. On Thursday, our logistics subsidiary quietly declined to renew. By Friday afternoon, I'd had a private conversation with the shared investor that didn't mention Alvarez once — I just presented a better opportunity, and he was smart enough to take it.

Rory sat across from me through most of it. He never asked why. He just worked.

On the second Friday, he slid a document across my desk. A credit facility. One of three that Alvarez Holdings used to float their quarterly operations.

"The lead bank on this," he said. "They have a pending refinancing request with one of our investment arms."

I looked at the number. Then at him.

"How long can we delay the review?"

"Sixty days, comfortably. Ninety if we cite due diligence backlog."

"Ninety," I said.

He wrote it down. That was all.

It was surgical. That was the word I kept coming back to. Not brutal — surgical. I wasn't burning anything down. I was just quietly removing the oxygen, one room at a time, until the whole structure had nothing left to breathe.

I thought about Simone sometimes, in the middle of it. Not with anger. Anger would have made it feel personal. I thought about her the way you think about a problem you've already solved — with a kind of cool, finished clarity.

She'd sat in my kitchen. She'd held my hand at Eli's school performances. She'd known, the whole time, and she'd smiled at me over coffee with my husband's fingerprints still on her.

Ninety days. Three credit lines. Twelve subsidiary contracts.

I didn't need to feel anything about it. I just needed to be thorough.

---

Greyson got the call on a Wednesday.

I know because Rory's contact at the firm sent a brief note. *Terminated. Effective immediately. Largest client pulled account without explanation.*

I was in a board prep session when I read it. I finished the session. I didn't tell anyone.

Later, I thought about Greyson sitting in his car in the parking garage, calling Simone. I thought about Simone calling her father. Preston Alvarez, old money and older arrogance, trying to trace the shape of something that had no visible edges.

They would look for a competitor. A market shift. Bad luck.

They wouldn't find me. I'd made sure of that.

---

The client dinner was at a restaurant in Tribeca. Private room. Eight people. The kind of dinner where the wine list was longer than the menu and everyone was performing a version of themselves they'd spent years rehearsing.

I was seated next to a man named Callum Reid. Mid-fifties. Acquisition-minded. He'd been circling a deal with Howell Group for two months and hadn't committed, which meant tonight was about pressure.

His pressure started around the second course.

"Ms. Howell." He lifted his glass. "To new partnerships."

Everyone at the table lifted theirs. I reached for my water.

Callum's smile stayed in place but his eyes sharpened. "Surely not water. Not for a toast like this."

"I'm fine with water, thank you."

"Come on." His voice was easy. Practiced. The tone of a man who'd used social weight as a lever his entire career. "It's one glass. You're not going to make me drink alone."

The table tilted toward him. I could feel it — that particular silence that means everyone is waiting to see if you'll hold or fold.

Then Rory reached across and picked up the champagne glass in front of me.

"I'll take that," he said, and his voice was so completely unbothered that it sounded like he was doing Callum a favor. "Ms. Howell has an early call to Tokyo. She's been gracious enough to stay through dinner." He turned to Callum with something that wasn't quite a smile. "Tokyo doesn't care about time zones."

Callum laughed. The table laughed. The moment dissolved.

Rory drank the champagne. He didn't look at me.

It happened twice more over the course of the evening. Each time so smooth, so natural, that I was fairly certain no one else at the table tracked the pattern.

I tracked it.

On the way out, our coats in hand, I waited until we were past the door and into the cold night air.

"You didn't have to do that," I said.

"I know."

We walked half a block in silence. The city was loud around us — cabs, voices, the distant percussion of a city that never quite stopped.

"Three glasses," I said.

"You were counting."

"I count everything."

He glanced at me. Just briefly. That same half-second too long.

"So do I," he said.

He hailed a cab. I got in. He closed the door.

I watched him through the window as the cab pulled away, standing on the curb with his hands in his pockets, not moving until I was gone.

I didn't know what to do with that.

So I filed it away, carefully, in the part of myself I hadn't let anyone near in a very long time.
