Chapter 3

Marcus Delray came the day after Remington left.

No knock. Just the soft click of the door, and then he was standing inside it — hat in hand, eyes on the floor. He was one of Remington's men, had been for three years. I had seen him at every base function, standing two steps behind his commander like a shadow that had learned to salute.

He didn't speak. He crossed to my bedside, set a folded piece of paper on the blanket near my hand, and walked back out.

The door clicked shut.

I unfolded it slowly. My hands were stiff in the cold of the room. One line. A timestamp. A vehicle ID number. The east crossing. 0614 hours.

I read it twice. Then I held it over the ashtray beside the bed and lit the corner with the lighter the night nurse had left for the woman two beds over. I watched it curl and blacken and go to ash.

Then I picked up the phone.

'Atticus.'

'I'm here.'

I gave him the numbers from memory. Timestamp first, then the vehicle ID. My voice was steady. Outside, the wind was doing what Alaskan wind always does — pressing against the glass like it wants in.

'Got it,' he said. Just that.

'Thank you,' I said.

A pause. 'How are your legs today?'

I looked at the fixators. The steel rods caught the fluorescent light. 'They're there,' I said.

He didn't push. That was the thing about Atticus — he asked the question and then he waited for the real answer, not the polite one. When the real answer was silence, he held the silence with me.

We stayed on the line like that for a while.

The showcase was three weeks later.

They wheeled me into the hall in a chair I had not yet made peace with. The room was full — brass from three postings, the colonel up front, two visiting generals I recognized from the commendation ceremony last spring. The kind of audience a performer builds a career toward.

Winona took the stage in my position.

I watched her from the third row. She was dressed in the costume that had been fitted for my body — they had altered it, but not well. I noticed that first. Then I noticed everything else.

The opening cue. She came in two beats late.

The footwork in the second sequence — she lost the floor on the turn, caught herself on the wrong foot, and the recovery was the kind that only looks like a recovery to people who have never danced. Everyone in that hall who had ever watched me perform knew exactly what they were seeing.

By the third sequence, the room had gone very quiet. Not the held-breath quiet of a performance landing. The other kind.

She made it to the end. She always would — that was the one thing she was genuinely good at, finishing what she started in front of an audience. But the damage was done. Every senior officer in that room had just watched the unit's lead performance slot collapse in real time.

I pressed my fingertips together in my lap and said nothing.

The accusation came the next morning in the mess hall.

Remington walked in at 0730 and the room adjusted around him the way it always had — conversations dropping half a volume, postures straightening by reflex. He stopped in the center of the room. I was at the far table. Still in the chair. My tray was in front of me, untouched.

He looked at me across the room full of people and said it clearly, so everyone could hear.

'Alena drugged Winona before the showcase. She sabotaged the performance from her wheelchair because she couldn't stand losing the position she no longer deserves.'

The room went silent.

I did not move. I have a dancer's stillness when I am most furious — feet flat, spine straight, breath suspended. I held it.

Around me, I felt the shift. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just — a shift. The kind you feel in a room when people who have been choosing not to see something finally see it. Two officers near the window looked at each other. Sergeant Delray, three tables away, set down his fork and stared at the surface of his coffee.

I looked at Remington for a long moment. Then I picked up my fork and ate my breakfast.

Dr. Petra Voss arrived from Manhattan four days later.

She was small, precise, and entirely without warmth — which I respected. She reviewed the imaging, examined the fixators, asked me exactly four questions, and wrote for forty minutes without speaking.

When she finished, she looked up.

'These fractures,' she said, 'are not consistent with a vehicle impact at that speed. The angle of the primary break, the secondary fracture pattern — this is targeted loading. Deliberate force applied to a specific point.' She paused. 'I have documented this in my report. The report will go to Atticus Hawkins. What he does with it is his decision.'

She left without ceremony.

I lay back against the pillow and looked at the ceiling. The fluorescent light hummed. My legs throbbed inside their scaffolding, the way they always did, steady and faithful and entirely mine.

Somewhere south of here, the truth was already moving.
