Chapter 4

I saw the bracelet before I understood what it was.

Winona was standing near the mess hall door, laughing at something one of the junior officers said. Her wrist caught the light when she lifted her coffee cup. A gold chain. Simple. Familiar in the way a scar is familiar — you don't have to look directly at it to know it's there.

I knew that chain.

Remington had shown it to me three years into our engagement, late at night in the Quonset hut, the wind pressing hard against the walls. He'd held it up between two fingers and said, 'This is the one thing I'd entrust with my life.' I'd laughed and asked why. He'd just looked at me in that way he had then — before the eagles, before Winona — and said nothing. That was its own kind of answer.

I had kept it in a small box in my quarters. I hadn't worn it in months. I hadn't needed to. It was enough that it existed.

Now it was on her wrist.

I pressed my fingertips together in my lap. One, two, three, four. The frostbite tingling answered back, dull and steady. I held the pressure until the sensation grounded me, until the thing rising in my chest had somewhere to go.

Then I released them.

I didn't say anything. There was nothing left to say that the silence didn't already say better.

---

The bonfire was the unit's end-of-month gathering. Someone had dragged logs out behind the south barracks. The flames were high — good Alaskan high, the kind that pushes back the dark for twenty feet in every direction. I came because absence would have been noticed and noted, and I was done giving Remington reasons to put his name on my behavior.

I stood near the edge of the group. My jacket was on. My mother's locket was in the small pouch in my left pocket, where it always was — a flat oval of gold with a photograph inside so worn the image was more memory than image. She had been gone since I was eleven. The locket was the only physical proof that she had held me.

I felt the pocket go light before I understood why.

I turned.

Winona was standing two feet away, the pouch open in her hand. She tipped it into her palm. The locket caught the firelight — gold, small, weightless. She looked at it for a moment with the expression of someone examining a pebble they found in their shoe.

Then she tossed it into the fire.

'I thought it was trash,' she said. A small shrug. A slight smile at the corner of her mouth.

I was already moving.

I don't remember deciding to reach into the fire. I remember the heat — a wall of it, immediate and total — and the coals at the edge, orange-white, and my hand going toward the place where the locket had fallen. I remember thinking I could get to it. I remember thinking it was still there.

Someone shouted. The fire pit shifted — a log, a foot, someone grabbing at me — and then the whole thing was going over, coals scattering, and I was going down with it.

The pain was not like anything I can describe in sequence. It was everywhere at once. My arms. My torso. The side of my neck. The frozen ground came up to meet me and I was on it, and I was burning, and I was screaming — I know I was screaming because I could hear it from somewhere outside my own body, the way I had heard my own breathing in the hospital after the accident.

Soldiers moved. Voices. Hands reaching.

And then — boots.

I saw them first because I was on the ground and the ground was where boots were. Even and deliberate. The parade-ground cadence I had memorized over five years. They came fast — running, actually running, the one time I had ever seen Remington Knight run toward something without being ordered to.

He ran past me.

He stepped over my body the way you step over something on the ground that doesn't require stopping for. His shoulder brushed the arm of the soldier trying to pull me clear. He kept going.

Twenty feet away, Winona stood in the firelight. Not a single ember on her. Her hair was perfect. Her face was arranged into an expression of beautiful distress. Remington reached her and folded her into his chest, his arms going around her, his head bending over hers.

I lay on the frozen ground and watched him hold her.

Other hands were on me by then, pulling me back, voices saying my name. I let them. I was very still inside the pain — that dancer's stillness, the one I had used at the disciplinary hearing, at the mess hall, at the hospital. I held the position.

And I felt it go.

Not dramatically. Not like a door slamming. More like an exhale at the end of a very long hold — the moment when the body simply releases what it has been gripping, because gripping it any longer would cost more than letting it go.

Five years. Every winter. Every stage I had walked away from. Every morning I had pressed my frostbitten fingers together and told myself it was worth it.

All of it left my body in one quiet breath.

I looked up at the Alaskan sky. Flat white at the edges where the fire lit it. The same sky it had always been.

'Phone,' I said to the soldier nearest me. My voice was steady. 'I need a phone.'

He put his in my hand without a word.

I dialed. My burned fingers moved slowly, but they moved.

Atticus answered before the first ring finished.

'Alena.' Just my name. The only word in the sentence.

'Come get me,' I said. 'And bring a ring.'
