After My Alpha’s Betrayal, the Lycan King Claimed Me Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 10:47 PM, three minutes after Chase finished his speech.

I was standing near the back of the banquet hall when he said my name. Not the way he used to say it in the early days—soft, almost careful—but flat. Like reading from a grocery list.

"I, Chase Edwards, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Sylvie, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Ice-cold, like someone pressed a frozen coin to the skin. Then it split. Not a clean break—a tearing sensation, tissue separating from tissue, and I felt the exact moment the bond snapped because my wolf screamed inside me and then went silent. Completely silent. The kind of silence that meant something had died.

I dropped to my knees.

The banquet hall didn't go quiet. That would've required people to stop talking. Most of them kept eating. A few glanced over, then looked away. I pressed my hand to my neck and my fingers came away wet. Not blood—something clear and cold that smelled like metal.

Chase was still standing at the front of the hall. Veronica was beside him in a white dress. Luna white. She wasn't smiling, but her hand rested on his arm with the easy confidence of someone who'd already won.

Through the fracturing bond—because it wasn't gone yet, not completely, just dying—I felt Chase's emotion. Relief. Clean and immediate. No guilt. No hesitation. Just relief that it was finally done.

That was worse than the pain.

My wolf tried to rise, tried to fight, but she couldn't. Three years of wolfsbane had left her too weak. She thrashed once inside me, then curled in on herself like something wounded. I could feel her fading.

Two warriors stepped forward. I recognized them—Garrett and Cole, both Deltas. I'd packed their supply bags for border patrols. I'd helped Garrett's mate when she had trouble shifting during her first pregnancy.

Garrett grabbed my left arm. Cole took my right.

"Let's go," Garrett said. Not unkind. Just efficient.

They hauled me to my feet. My legs didn't want to hold me, but they didn't care. They started dragging me across the banquet hall floor, past tables full of wolves eating food I'd helped procure, past faces I'd seen every day for three years. No one met my eyes.

The mark wound pulsed with every heartbeat. Each pulse sent a fresh wave of cold through my chest. My vision went white at the edges, then came back, then went white again.

Chase still wasn't looking at me.

Veronica was, though. Just for a second. Her expression wasn't triumphant. It was... assessing. Like she was checking to make sure I was really leaving.

The main doors opened. Night air hit my face. They dragged me down the front steps, across the gravel drive, past the line of parked cars. My feet scraped the ground. One of my shoes came off. I didn't try to retrieve it.

The border stones marked the edge of Ironvale territory—three granite markers set in a triangle, each one carved with the pack seal. Garrett and Cole hauled me past the first stone. Then the second.

As we crossed the third, something inside me snapped.

Not the bond this time. Something older.

My body convulsed. Garrett's grip slipped. I hit the ground hard, gravel biting into my palms, and the world tilted sideways. Heat exploded through my chest—not pain, but pressure, like something enormous trying to force its way out through my ribs.

The wolfsbane was gone. I'd stopped taking the suppressants two days ago because I'd run out and hadn't had time to get more. Three years of chemical suppression, and it had finally cleared my system.

My wolf erupted.

I didn't choose to shift. It happened to me. My bones broke and reformed in seconds—not the smooth transition I'd seen other wolves manage, but violent and absolute. My body tore itself apart and rebuilt in a form I'd never worn before.

When I opened my eyes, I was looking down at Garrett from a height that shouldn't have been possible.

I was massive. Easily twice the size of any wolf I'd ever seen. My fur was silver-white, catching the moonlight like frost. And the aura—

It blasted outward from me in a shockwave I could see.

Garrett dropped to his knees. So did Cole. Their necks bared automatically, wolves recognizing something their human minds couldn't name yet. Behind them, through the open banquet hall doors, I saw the entire pack collapse. Hundreds of wolves, all of them forced down by an authority they couldn't resist.

Including Chase.

He was on his knees at the front of the hall, head bowed, and his wolf—I could feel it through the dying bond—was cowering.

I heard engines. Multiple vehicles, moving fast.

Three black SUVs tore through Ironvale's main gate and stopped in a semicircle around me. Lycan Guard. I recognized the insignia on the doors.

A man stepped out of the center vehicle. Tall, silver-haired, wearing a long coat that moved like water. His scent hit me before he spoke—old cedar and winter wind and something underneath that made my wolf go very, very still.

He looked at me. Not at my wolf form—at me, specifically. Like he could see through the fur and bone to whatever was underneath.

"Sylvie," he said quietly. His voice carried across the entire clearing without him raising it. "My daughter."

The world stopped.

"Every alliance Chase Edwards secured in the last three years," the man continued, turning to address the kneeling pack, "was engineered by the Lycan Crown. Every territorial gain. Every treaty. We built his success as a protective net around our missing heir." His gaze landed on Chase, still frozen on his knees. "He built nothing on his own."

Chase's face went white.

The man—the Lycan King, I understood now, Mathew Ashford—gestured to his Guard. "Bring her."

They moved toward me carefully, hands visible, no weapons drawn. I shifted back to human form without meaning to. My body knew how now. One of the Guards draped a coat over my shoulders.

I pressed my hand to my neck. The mark wound was still bleeding that clear, cold fluid. Through it, I felt Chase's rage igniting—not at himself, but at me, for being something he hadn't known about.

I didn't look back as they led me to the SUV.

The convoy pulled away from Ironvale with me in the back seat, silent and bleeding.

I had a bloodline claim that superseded every Alpha in that hall. I had a wolf that forced an entire pack to their knees. I had a King who owed me three years.

And I had Chase's dying rage pulsing in my neck like a second heartbeat.

I noted it. Filed it.

Did not flinch.
