After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Pack Followed Me

The second wave came four days after Marcus.

They arrived in threes and fours, never a single wolf alone, like they'd made some silent pact not to be the last one standing at Ironveil. A border captain named Priya Osei showed up with two of her own trained scouts and a hand-drawn map of Ironveil's old patrol weaknesses, which she handed over without being asked. A strategist named Wendell Cho arrived with nothing but a duffel bag and five years of alliance paperwork memorized in his head, because he said he hadn't trusted paper not to be searched on his way out. A healer's apprentice, barely twenty, came alone on foot and cried when Nora Voss met her at the treeline, though she wouldn't say why.

I didn't ask any of them why they'd left family behind, or what it cost them in whispered accusations back at Ironveil. I already knew. I put Priya on the western ridge with Marcus's night rotation. I gave Wendell a desk beside mine and had him rebuild the alliance ledgers from memory before the details faded. I sent the apprentice to Nora with instructions to rest first and work second.

No speeches. No welcome ceremony. Just work, handed out the way you'd hand out tools to people who already knew how to use them. By the end of the second week, Dawnridge had a functioning border rotation, a healer's station with real supplies, and two alliance liaisons—Talia Grant and Oren Michaels—who'd once sat across the table from foreign Alphas on my behalf and now sat across a folding table in my half-repaired den, doing the same work for a fraction of the comfort.

The pack was taking shape. I could feel it the way you feel a current form around a stone in a riverbed—not fast, not dramatic, just water learning where to go.

Zendaya brought me the Ironveil reports the way she brought everything else—unannounced, mid-stride, dropping into the chair across from me like she'd been there all day.

"Capri torpedoed the Ashwood agreement," she said. "You know, the territorial renewal you negotiated two years ago? Came due for annual sign-off. She sat on it three days, then sent back one line telling their Alpha the terms were 'no longer a priority.'"

I set down my pen. "She read it as a formality."

"She read it as beneath her." Zendaya's mouth twisted. "Ashwood's Alpha took it as a full withdrawal. Dissolved the whole thing by Friday. Capri's calling it a clerical error now, which is rich, since there was no clerk involved. Just her."

I thought of the sensation Simon must have felt, however briefly, when that word reached him—alliance dissolved—and something in me, some old reflex, almost flinched on his behalf before I caught it and let it go cold. That reflex was going to take longer to die than the bond had.

"There's more," Zendaya said. "Capri's scared now. She's reading every defection as a personal insult, so she had Simon expel six more fighters and two strategists this week. Called them traitors in front of the whole hall."

"Elaine let that happen?"

"Elaine cheered for it, at first." Zendaya's voice flattened. "Until two more packs pulled agreements this week—ones you kept alive personally. Then Elaine lost it. Screamed at Simon in the pack house that you were the only reason they ever had power. In front of the staff."

I could picture it too easily—Elaine's clipped voice cracking into something raw, Simon's face going tight the way it did when the world refused to bend to his bloodline.

"He shut her down with Alpha tone," Zendaya added. "But everyone in that room heard the crack in it. It's not landing the way it used to. People noticed."

I nodded slowly and picked the pen back up, because that was easier than sitting with what I felt, which was nothing satisfying, just a tired, quiet confirmation of something I'd known for years and no one had believed.

That evening, Zendaya came back with a bottle of wine and a folder, and dropped both on my desk hard enough to rattle my inkwell.

"Sign-offs from Larkspur, Millbrook, and Reed Hollow," she said. "Trade terms, mutual non-aggression. Small, but real. Three packs just bet on you, Gemma."

I looked at the signatures. Three names, three seals, three packs that had no reason to trust a territory that hadn't existed as a power two weeks ago.

"Sit with that for five minutes," Zendaya said, already pulling the cork. "I mean it. Five whole minutes where you're not planning the next thing."

I looked at the papers a moment longer. Then I reached for two glasses and poured.

It was the first time since arriving at Dawnridge that I had stopped moving.
