Chapter 3

Three hundred miles north, in an office he'd built to project authority he no longer felt, Xander Hale sat behind his desk with Elena Voss's report open beneath his hands.

The language was clinical. Trained. *Patient presented with severe blood loss consistent with blunt trauma to the lower abdomen. Products of conception not viable. Patient stabilized after four hours.* Elena had written it the way healers were taught to write everything—stripped of blood and screaming, reduced to sentences that could be filed without anyone having to feel them.

Xander felt them anyway.

Around him, in neat rows along the shelf he'd never once reorganized, sat eight years of Emma's handwriting. Alliance briefings. Warrior schedules. A folder of correspondence with the Brackenridge Pack that had taken her three months and one broken engagement to secure. He had kept every page. He told himself it was administrative habit. He had never once asked himself why administrative habit required him to run his thumb along the edge of her handwriting at two in the morning, the way he'd started doing sometime after she left.

The Alpha tone did not come when he tried to summon it. It simply wasn't there—the register that had lived in his voice since he was nineteen years old, gone quiet without his permission, for the first time in his adult life.

He sat with the file for a long time.

Then, slowly, the other part of him—the part that had never stopped calculating, not once, not even now—began to move again. *What can be restructured.* Violet's pregnancy was strategically necessary but not irreplaceable if handled correctly. The pack's perception of him could survive a great deal if the narrative were managed. Emma had always been the better strategist. Perhaps that was the answer. Reinstate her. Reject Violet. Rebuild what he'd dismantled, the way he'd rebuilt everything else in his life—through sufficient will and sufficient effort.

He did not let himself finish the thought that Emma was not a treaty to be renegotiated.

He closed the file. His hands were not steady.

---

I didn't know any of that yet. I only knew the rain had stopped smelling like anything I recognized, and something under my ribs had started answering a signal I couldn't place.

It happened in the grocery store parking lot on a Thursday, Barnaby's leash looped twice around my wrist because he'd decided a seagull three lots over required investigation. The rain had gone from a mist to something with weight, drumming on car roofs, and I was thinking about nothing—about eggs, about whether Barnaby had finished the last bag of kibble—when the low vibration that had lived under my sternum since Ironveil cracked.

Not broke. Cracked, the way ice cracks before it gives.

I stopped walking. Barnaby stopped too, ears up, reading something in my body before I'd finished reading it myself.

I turned.

He was standing near a black SUV at the edge of the lot, rain sliding off him like it had been told not to bother, and he was not moving at all. Tall. Dark hair soaked flat. A sigil open on his forearm—no attempt to hide it, no sleeve pulled down over it—that I didn't recognize but somehow understood anyway, the way you understand a word in a language you've never studied.

He was watching me the way a wolf watches something it has been searching for without knowing the shape of it.

It should have frightened me. Every instinct built over eight years of pack politics said a stranger's stillness in an empty lot was a threat to be assessed and avoided. Instead my heartbeat did something unfamiliar—not panic, not the cold recoil I'd trained into myself since the platform. Something closer to recognition. My thumb found the inside of my wrist without my telling it to, tracing the old habit, running the numbers.

I walked toward him instead of away.

"You're not from around here," I said, when I was close enough that Barnaby had gone quiet, sitting at my heel with the sudden good behavior of a dog who'd decided something important was happening. "And you're not lost."

Something shifted behind his eyes. "No," he said. His voice was low, unhurried, carrying the particular weight of someone who rarely needed to raise it. "I'm not."

"You're tracking a bloodline signature," I said. "Something dormant. Something that surged a few weeks ago." I watched his jaw tighten, the first crack in that composure. "It's mine."

He didn't ask how I knew. I respected that.

"I also have something else you'll want," I said. "Documentation. Eight years of it. Wolfsbane trafficking, funded and run by an Alpha your Council would very much like to bury." I held his gaze. "I'm offering an alliance. My intelligence. Your authority. Same target."

Rain slid down his throat. Somewhere behind him, near the SUV, another man watched us without moving, his attention sharp enough that I filed him as dangerous and set him aside.

"And the rest of it?" the stranger asked quietly. "What you felt when you turned around?"

"Isn't part of the negotiation," I said.

I held out my hand.

He looked at it. Then at my face, for a beat longer than the moment required. Then he took it, his palm warm despite the rain, and something in his grip didn't release the way a handshake should.

"Cael Bloodcrest," he said.

"Emma Ashford," I said, and did not let go first.
