I Signed the Divorce Papers, Why Are You Crying? Chapter 1

For five years, I gave up my identity to play the devoted housewife, nursing our sickly son and cooking every meal from scratch. On our fifth wedding anniversary, my husband didn't bring flowers—he brought Sarah, his frail college friend, announcing she was moving into our guest room. When Sarah staged a spill to frame me for scalding her, my seven-year-old son slapped my hand away, screaming, "I hate you! I wish Aunt Sarah was my real mom!" My husband sneered that even my own child couldn't stand me.

They thought I would break. Instead, an icy clarity took over.

I quietly signed the divorce papers, waiving custody, the house, and every marital asset. What they didn't know was that my name wasn't Maya—it was Chloe Vance, the sole heiress to a forty-billion-dollar maritime empire. And the company keeping my husband afloat? It was mine all along.

The twin tapered candles flickered against the polished mahogany table, casting a warm glow over the fine china.

Five years.

It felt like both a lifetime and a heartbeat. On the sideboard sat two ribeye steaks resting under foil, alongside a chocolate truffle cake I had spent four hours perfecting. "Happy 5th Anniversary" was piped neatly across the dark ganache in delicate white script.

I smoothed the front of my emerald dress, listening to the quiet hum of the house.

When Liam had launched his logistics firm three years ago, I gave up my career in interior design without hesitation. I managed his calendar, handled our finances, and built a warm, orderly home so he could conquer the corporate world without worrying about the roof over our heads. When our son, Noah, was diagnosed with severe asthma at four, I became the mom who never missed a doctor’s appointment, the one who measured every meal and kept emergency inhalers in every purse.

I had poured every ounce of myself into being the backbone of this family.

Tonight was supposed to be our celebration. A quiet evening to reconnect after months of Liam's late nights and distant stares.

At seven sharp, the front door lock clicked.

A genuine smile broke across my face. I picked up the wine opener from the counter and walked into the foyer.

"Happy anniversary, babe," I said, stepping into the entryway. "You're actually right on—"

The words froze in my throat.

Liam wasn’t alone.

Standing half a step behind him was a slender woman wrapped in an oversized cashmere coat. She looked fragile, with pale porcelain skin, large hazel eyes, and dark hair falling softly around her shoulders. In Liam's left hand was a large leather duffel bag. In his right, he carried a woman’s rolling suitcase.

"Liam?" I said, the wine opener suddenly heavy in my palm. "What's going on?"

Liam didn't look at my dress, the makeup I had carefully applied, or the dim romantic lighting spilling from the dining room. He loosened his tie with one hand, his face set in a mask of businesslike efficiency.

"This is Sarah," Liam said, setting the bags down by the coat rack. "Her lease fell through, and she's been dealing with a flare-up of her chronic anemia. She has nowhere else to stay while she looks for a new place, so she's moving into our guest room."

I stared at him, convinced my ears had failed me.

"She's... what?"

"She's staying with us," Liam repeated, louder this time, as if speaking to a child who had failed to comprehend simple English.

The woman, Sarah, offered a timid, apologetic smile. She pulled her coat tighter around her frail frame, looking down at our hardwood floor as though embarrassed to exist.

"I'm so sorry to intrude, Maya," Sarah said softly. Her voice sounded like wind chimes—breathy, delicate, and entirely practiced. "Liam insisted. I told him I could manage in a motel, but he wouldn't hear of it. I really don't want to be a burden."

"You're not a burden," Liam said, his tone softening in a way I hadn't heard in over a year. He reached out and touched Sarah’s elbow, guiding her past me into the warmth of the hall. "I told you, you're family. You don't stay in cheap motels."

The blood roared in my ears.

"Liam, can I speak to you in the kitchen? Right now," I managed, fighting to keep my voice from cracking.

Liam sighed, rolling his eyes as if I were asking him to shovel snow in July. He patted Sarah's arm. "Make yourself comfortable. I'll take your bags upstairs in a minute."

He followed me into the kitchen, shutting the glass pocket door behind him with enough force to rattle the panes.

"Have you completely lost your mind?" I hissed, lowering my voice so it wouldn't carry. "You brought a stranger into our home? On our anniversary?"

"Don't start," Liam snapped, crossing his arms. "Sarah isn't a stranger. I told you about her months ago—she’s an old college friend who moved back to the city. Her health is terrible right now, and she has no family here."

"I don't care if she's the Queen of England!" My hands trembled, and I set the wine opener on the granite island so I wouldn't drop it. "This is our fifth anniversary, Liam! Look at the table. Look at the cake! We had plans!"

"Plans can be rescheduled, Maya," he said coldly. "A human being's well-being can't. Why are you always so self-centered?"

"Self-centered?" A bitter laugh tore from my chest. "I gave up my entire life for you and Noah! I spent all afternoon preparing this night for us, and you show up with another woman and tell me she's moving into our guest room without even asking me!"

"I don't need permission to help a friend in my own house," he cut in, his voice sharp as a blade. "I pay the mortgage here. If I say she stays, she stays."

Before I could breathe through the agony of his words, the thud of energetic footsteps echoed from the stairs.

"Dad?"

Noah burst around the corner, his small sneakers skidding on the floor. At seven years old, he had Liam's dark hair and sharp brown eyes. He had been playing video games in his room waiting for dinner.

"Dad, you're home!" Noah yelled. Then he stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes landing on the woman standing in the living room archway.

Sarah smiled down at him, stepping into view. "Hey there, buddy."

Noah’s face lit up with an excitement I hadn't seen on him in weeks. "Aunt Sarah!"

He didn't glance at me. He didn't look at the warm batch of chocolate chip cookies I had baked especially for him, sitting under a glass dome on the counter. He completely bypassed me and threw himself into Sarah's arms.

Sarah caught him, letting out a soft, theatrical laugh as she knelt on the carpet. "Look at you! Did you get taller since last week?"

My breath hitched. *Since last week?*

"Look what I brought you," Sarah murmured, reaching into her large leather tote bag. She pulled out a sleek, metallic box wrapped in a clear display sleeve.

Noah gasped, his jaw dropping. "The Neo-Titanium Mech! The limited collector's edition?!"

"Guaranteed authentic," Sarah said playfully, tapping his small nose. "Just like I promised."

"Yes! Yes! Thank you!" Noah hugged the box to his chest, practically bouncing off the floor.

He spun around to face me, waving the giant toy in the air with unbridled triumph.

"Look, Mom! She actually got it!" Noah shouted, his voice ringing with pure accusation. "You said it was sold out everywhere and too expensive! You lied! Aunt Sarah knows me way better than you do!"

The room seemed to spin.

Every late night I spent putting cool cloths on his feverish forehead, every early morning I packed his lunch with little hand-drawn notes, every boundary I set to teach him the value of patience—all of it was erased by a fifty-dollar plastic robot.

And worse... he called her *Aunt Sarah*. He knew her. They had met before. Behind my back.

"Noah," I whispered, my chest aching so sharply I couldn't draw a full breath. "Go put that upstairs."

"No!" Noah whined, immediately tucking himself behind Sarah's legs. "Aunt Sarah said she'd help me build the armor!"

"Noah, go," Liam instructed, though his voice lacked any real discipline. He stepped forward, his eyes locking onto mine with an icy, warning glare. "And you—stop."

"Stop what?" I choked out, tears of humiliation threatening to spill over my lashes. "Liam, explain this to me. Right now."

Liam took a step closer, towering over me, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper.

"I told you to drop it, Maya. Do not act crazy in front of a guest. If you throw a tantrum right now and ruin this evening for Sarah and Noah, I swear you will regret it."

He didn't wait for my answer. He turned his back on me, effortlessly shifting his posture into that of a protective, attentive man.

"Come on, Sarah," Liam said gently, taking her by the elbow again. "Let's get you settled on the couch. Noah, bring your toy into the living room. Your dad will help you open the box."

"Okay!" Noah cheered, clutching Sarah's hand as they walked together toward the sofa.

I stood frozen in the middle of the kitchen.

From where I stood, I had a clear view into the living room. Liam was sitting on the sectional, leaning over Noah with a warm smile, while Sarah sat beside them, laughing softly and resting her chin in her hand. They fit together seamlessly. Natural. Complete.

Like a family.

A picture-perfect family that had no room for me.

Slowly, I turned back toward the dining table.

The two candles had burned down unevenly, wax pooling in thick, ugly clots on the linen runner. On the counter, the "Happy 5th Anniversary" cake sat untouched, the glossy chocolate icing beginning to crack under the dry heat of the room.

I looked down at my trembling hands.

My marriage hadn't just broken tonight. It had been rotting from the inside out for months, and I was the only fool who hadn't seen the maggots.
