After My Alpha Rejected Me for His Pregnant Mistress Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, under torchlight, in front of three hundred wolves.

I stood on the ceremonial platform in the Luna regalia I'd spent two months selecting—white silk, silver threading at the collar, the Ironveil crest embroidered over my heart. My hand rested on my abdomen. Not consciously. Just there. The way it had been resting there for three weeks, since I'd confirmed what I hadn't told him yet. What I'd planned to announce tonight, after the ritual, when he placed the ceremonial crown and called me Luna before the entire pack.

Xander stood across from me in full Alpha formal dress, his jaw set, his shoulders square. He looked like every photograph we'd ever taken together—commanding, certain, mine. Except his eye contact was too steady. A fraction too controlled. The tell I'd learned to read in our first year together, the one that meant he was lying by omission, holding something back.

I opened my mouth to ask him what was wrong.

He spoke first.

"I, Xander Hale, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Emma Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

The words hit like a physical blow. Not metaphorical. Actual impact, sternum to spine, the air forced from my lungs in a single shocked exhale. The mark on my neck—the one he'd placed eight years ago under a summer moon, the one I'd worn like a vow—cracked. I felt it. Like dried clay splitting in the sun. Cold rushed in where warmth had lived. The bond drained from my chest, not slowly, not gently, but all at once, the way blood drains from a wound when the pressure gives.

My wolf recoiled. I felt her retreat into a darkness I couldn't follow, a space inside me that had never been empty before. She didn't howl. She didn't fight. She just—went.

I couldn't breathe.

The platform tilted under my feet. Three hundred wolves stared up at me in absolute silence. No one moved. No one spoke. Xander's face was stone.

"Violet Romero," he said, turning to the crowd, his voice carrying across the ceremonial grounds with the Alpha tone I knew better than my own heartbeat, "will stand as my chosen mate and the Luna of this pack."

Violet stepped onto the platform from the shadows at the edge. She wore white. Not ceremonial white—bridal white. A dress I'd never seen before, tailored, deliberate, ready. She'd known. She'd been waiting.

She smiled at me. Soft. Deniable.

I turned to leave. My legs barely held me. The cold in my chest was spreading, numbing everything from the inside out. I had to get off this platform. I had to—

Violet stepped into my path.

"Emma," she said quietly, her voice pitched just loud enough for the nearest wolves to hear, "I'm so sorry. I never wanted it to be like this."

I stared at her. My mouth wouldn't form words.

She reached out as if to touch my arm—then stumbled. Her heel caught on nothing. She cried out, a sharp, frightened sound, and tipped toward the platform's edge.

Xander moved faster than I'd ever seen him move. His hand locked around my arm—not gently, not carefully—and he shoved. Hard.

I went off the platform backward.

The stone steps hit my spine first. Then my shoulder. Then my head. The world fractured into sharp edges and torchlight and the taste of copper in my mouth. Something inside me tore. Not muscle. Deeper. A ripping sensation low in my abdomen, wet and wrong and final.

I tried to stand. My legs wouldn't respond. Warmth spread beneath me, soaking through the white silk. Blood. Too much blood.

Above me, on the platform, Xander held Violet against his chest. She was crying into his shoulder. He murmured something I couldn't hear, his hand cradling the back of her head.

He didn't look down.

Not once.

The first rogue came through the eastern perimeter thirty seconds later. Then another. Then six more. The attack sirens screamed. Wolves scattered. Xander lifted Violet into his arms and ran—not toward me, not toward the healer's den—toward the reinforced safe room at the center of the pack house.

I lay on the stone steps, bleeding, and watched him carry her away.

Footsteps pounded toward me. Not Xander's. Skyla's. She dropped to her knees beside me, her hands already moving, checking for injuries, her face white.

"Emma. Emma, stay with me."

A rogue lunged from the shadows. Skyla spun, caught its throat mid-leap, and slammed it into the ground with a snarl that rattled my ribs. Another came. She took a slash across her forearm blocking it, then drove her claws through its chest.

She dragged me. I don't remember the path. Just the scrape of stone under my back, the wet heat still spreading, and Skyla's voice in my ear, low and fierce: "You don't get to die here. You hear me? Not here. Not for him."

The healer's den smelled like antiseptic and wolfsbane tincture. Elena Voss's hands were quick and clinical. She didn't speak. She didn't need to. I saw it in her face when she pulled back the blood-soaked silk.

Gone.

The baby was gone.

My wolf, deep in the darkness where she'd retreated, made a sound. Not a howl. Something lower. A vibration that started in my bones and spread outward, tectonic, as though something beneath her had woken and registered the violence and was filing it away.

Then silence.

I closed my eyes.

Xander didn't come.
