Chapter 2

Seven years later, I had a different name on the charts. Not Luna. Not mate. Just Healer.

The Moonveil Pack's coastal clinic smelled like sage and antiseptic. I kept the windows open year-round so the salt air could cut through the medicinal sharpness. Patients said it made the place feel less clinical. I didn't tell them I kept the windows open because I needed the scent of the ocean to drown out everything else.

Everlee pressed her small hand against my wrist while I reviewed the morning charts. She did that when she sensed I was working too hard to stay calm. She'd been doing it since she was three, before she had words for what she felt.

"Mommy," she said quietly. "My chest feels weird."

I set the clipboard down and crouched to her level. Her grey eyes—Spencer's eyes, though I never said that out loud—were wide and confused. I pressed my palm flat against her sternum. Beneath my hand, I felt it: the first stirring of her wolf. A low vibration, like a growl building in a space too small to contain it.

She was six years old. Most wolves didn't awaken until thirteen at the earliest. But Everlee wasn't most wolves. She was Lycan blood, even if I hadn't known it yet.

"It's okay," I said. I kept my voice steady. "That's your wolf saying hello."

"Why is she mad?" Everlee whispered.

I didn't have an answer for that. I smoothed her dark hair back from her forehead and stood. "She's not mad at you, baby. She's just waking up."

Everlee nodded, but her hand stayed pressed against her own chest, like she was trying to hold something in.

I went back to the charts. My bond-scar—the white, cold mark on my neck—caught the morning light. I didn't hide it. I didn't display it. I just let it exist, the way you let an old injury exist once it stops hurting.

The junior Healer, a cheerful Delta named Mara, poked her head into the office. "Jocelyn, heads up—there's a multi-pack summit starting today. We're hosting. Alpha Dominic wants all senior staff briefed by noon."

I nodded without looking up. Summits happened twice a year. Alphas postured. Betas negotiated. Healers patched up the occasional training injury. It was routine.

"Oh, and Silverfang's delegation just arrived," Mara added. "Big group. Luna Valerie's with them. And their kid."

My pen stopped moving.

Mara didn't notice. She was already halfway out the door, chattering about supply inventory. The door swung shut behind her.

I set the pen down carefully. My hands didn't shake. I had spent seven years making sure my hands never shook.

Spencer was here. On Moonveil territory. With Valerie. With their son.

I stood and walked to the supply cabinet. I pulled out the strongest herb-masking compound we kept—wolfsbane root, ground fine, mixed with clary sage and rosemary. I applied it to my pulse points, my throat, my wrists. Double-strength. Enough to bury my scent so deep that even a wolf standing three feet away wouldn't catch it.

Everlee watched me from the corner. "Mommy, that smells bad."

"I know, baby." I capped the vial and tucked it into my pocket. "But I need to wear it today."

She didn't ask why. She had learned not to ask why about certain things.

I called Mara back in and gave her instructions. Any Silverfang delegation medical requests went to her or one of the junior staff. I would handle Moonveil Pack members only. Mara blinked, surprised—I usually took the difficult cases myself—but she nodded.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of routine. I treated a sprained ankle. I stitched up a training cut. I reviewed vaccination records for the younger pack members. I did not leave the clinic. I did not go to the main pack house where the summit delegates were gathering. I stayed in my domain, where the scent of sage and antiseptic was thick enough to hide everything.

That evening, after Everlee was asleep in our small cottage on the edge of Moonveil territory, I walked to the cliffs.

I hadn't been to the cliffs in months. Maybe longer. But tonight I needed to see the ocean. I needed to stand somewhere big enough to hold what I was feeling without it spilling over.

The Pacific stretched out black and endless under the moonlight. The wind was cold and sharp, and it cut through the herb-masking compound until all I could smell was salt.

I stood at the edge and thought about the empty casket Spencer had buried seven years ago. I thought about the memorial grounds he had threatened to raze. I thought about the bond-mark on my neck that had gone cold the second he spoke the rejection vow.

I thought about the fact that he was here, thirty miles away, sleeping under the same sky.

My wolf—silent for seven years, dormant since the night I hit the stone altar—stirred. Just barely. A flicker, like a candle catching in a draft.

I pressed my hand to my chest, the way Everlee had done that morning.

The summit would last four days.

I could survive four days.

I turned and walked back toward the cottage. Behind me, the ocean roared against the rocks, and I did not look back.
