Chapter 3

The clinic smelled like sage and antiseptic when they brought him in.

Maximo. Spencer and Valerie's son. Seven years old, maybe eight. A training accident, Mara said. Gash on his forearm. Clean cut, not deep. Routine.

I kept my hands steady as I pulled on gloves. The herb-masking compound was thick on my skin—double-strength, reapplied twice since dawn. I could smell nothing but clary sage and rosemary. Good.

Mara led them into the primary treatment room. I heard Spencer's voice first—low, clipped, giving instructions to the boy. Then Valerie's softer murmur. Then the child's quiet sniffle.

I walked in with the suture tray.

Spencer stood by the window. He didn't look at me. Valerie sat beside Maximo on the exam table, her hand on his shoulder. The boy's arm was wrapped in a temporary bandage, already soaked through.

"Healer," Valerie said. Her voice was warm, practiced. "Thank you for seeing us."

I nodded once. I set the tray down and turned to Maximo. "Let me see."

The boy held out his arm. I unwrapped the bandage carefully. The cut was clean—three inches long, shallow, no debris. Someone had already rinsed it. I pressed gently along the edges. Maximo flinched but didn't pull away.

"You're doing great," I said. My voice was calm, professional. The voice I used with every patient. "I'm going to close this with a few stitches. You'll feel a pinch, but it won't hurt after that. Okay?"

Maximo nodded. His grey eyes—Spencer's eyes—watched me carefully.

I prepped the wound. Lidocaine first, then antiseptic. My hands moved on autopilot. I had done this a thousand times. I threaded the needle. Leaned in close.

And that's when it happened.

A single note of honeysuckle escaped the herb compound. Just one. Faint. Barely there.

Spencer made a sound.

Not loud. Just a sharp intake of breath, like someone had pressed a hot iron to his skin. I didn't look up. I kept my focus on the sutures, my hands steady, my breathing even. One stitch. Two. Three.

But I felt it. The weight of his stare. The way the air in the room shifted.

I tied off the last suture and stepped back. "All done. Keep it dry for forty-eight hours. Come back in a week to have the stitches removed."

Valerie stood quickly. "Thank you, Healer. We appreciate it."

I nodded. I turned to the sink to wash my hands. Behind me, I heard Valerie murmur something to Maximo, heard the boy slide off the table. Heard their footsteps move toward the door.

Spencer didn't move.

I dried my hands slowly. Deliberately. I could feel him still standing by the window, his presence a pressure against my spine.

"Next patient, please," I said without turning around.

Silence.

Then, finally, footsteps. The door opened. Closed.

I exhaled.

Mara poked her head in a moment later. "You okay? You look pale."

"I'm fine," I said. I stripped off the gloves and dropped them in the waste bin. "Who's next?"

That afternoon, Spencer came back.

Mara brought him to the secondary treatment room. Pulled muscle, she said. From the ceremonial run. I almost told her to handle it herself. But that would have been a deviation from protocol. A crack in the armor.

I walked in with the assessment checklist.

Spencer sat on the exam table, his shirt off, his left shoulder visibly tense. I didn't look at his face. I looked at the shoulder. Grade-one strain. Maybe less. Nothing that required intervention.

I made a note on the chart. "Ice for twenty minutes, twice daily. Ibuprofen if the discomfort persists. You're free to go."

I turned toward the door.

"Jocelyn."

My hand froze on the handle. Not *Healer.* My name. He said my name.

I didn't turn around. "I don't believe we've been introduced, Alpha. You're free to go."

I opened the door and walked out.

Behind me, I heard him stand. Heard the fabric of his shirt rustle as he pulled it back on. Heard his footsteps follow me into the hallway.

I kept walking. Past the reception desk. Past Mara's curious glance. Into my private office. I closed the door and locked it.

My hands were shaking.

I pressed them flat against the desk and breathed. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. The way I had taught myself seven years ago, in the days after I fled.

The bond-scar on my neck was cold. Silent. Dead.

But my wolf—dormant for seven years—flickered. Just once. Like a match striking in the dark.

I pressed my hand to my chest and waited for it to pass.

The next morning, I took Everlee to school.

She held my hand as we walked through the gate, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders. Her wolf had been restless all night—I'd felt it through the thin walls of our cottage, a low vibration that made the air feel tight.

"Mommy," she said as we reached her classroom door. "My chest still feels weird."

I crouched down and pressed my palm to her sternum. The vibration was stronger now. Her wolf was waking up faster than I'd anticipated.

"I know, baby," I said quietly. "But you're safe. I promise."

She nodded. Her grey eyes—Spencer's eyes—searched my face. "Okay."

I kissed her forehead and watched her disappear into the classroom. Then I turned and walked back toward the gate.

That's when I saw him.

Spencer stood thirty feet away, just outside the school boundary. He wasn't moving. He was just standing there, staring at the gate like he'd been struck.

I stopped.

For one second—one breath—I felt the phantom pull of the bond that no longer existed. The mark on my neck stayed cold. But something deeper, something I couldn't name, recognized him.

Then Everlee came back out.

She'd forgotten her water bottle. She ran toward me, her backpack bouncing, her face bright. And then she saw Spencer.

She stopped.

Her small body went rigid. Her hand pressed against her chest—the same gesture she'd been making for days. And then her wolf growled.

It was low. Bone-deep. A sound that didn't belong in a six-year-old's throat.

The Moonveil Delta escort—a young warrior named Finn—flinched and stepped forward, his hand moving instinctively toward a defensive stance.

I moved faster.

I stepped between Everlee and Spencer, my body a wall. I didn't look at him. I didn't speak. I just took Everlee's hand and turned back toward the school.

"Mommy," Everlee whispered. Her voice was shaking. "Who is that man?"

"No one," I said.

I walked her back to the classroom. I handed her the water bottle. I kissed her forehead again and watched her go inside.

Then I turned and walked toward the gate.

Spencer was still standing there. He hadn't moved. His grey eyes—the same eyes I saw every time I looked at my daughter—were locked on me.

I stopped at the boundary line. The invisible barrier that separated Moonveil territory from neutral ground.

"Leave," I said.

My voice was quiet. Cold. Final.

Spencer opened his mouth. Closed it. His hand went to his left forearm—the place where his bond-scar would be, hidden beneath his sleeve.

I turned my back on him and walked away.

Behind me, I heard him make a sound. Low. Broken. Almost like a howl.

I didn't look back.
