After My Alpha Publicly Claimed an Omega Instead of Me Chapter 1

The mating cuffs were cold in my hands.

Not cool. Cold. The way silver goes when something has touched it that shouldn't have.

I crouched on the stone floor of the ceremony hall, the Come of Age bonfire still crackling twenty feet behind me, pack members laughing and celebrating all around, and I held the cuffs Finn had forged himself eight years ago—held them and looked at the small, wet indentations left by milk teeth too young to know what they were destroying.

Everlee's pup. Three months old, maybe four. Still unsteady on its paws. It sat back on its haunches and looked up at me with enormous brown eyes, entirely unaware.

I was aware enough for both of us.

Deep in my chest, something shifted. Not pain—not yet. More like pressure. Like a door in a room I had never opened, straining against its frame.

I stood up slowly.

Everlee was already stammering. She was twenty-two, low-ranking, pretty in the way that reads as harmless until you look at her eyes. Right now her eyes were darting between me and the cuffs and the crowd, calculating the audience.

"Luna Meredith, I'm so sorry, I didn't see him get away, he's just a pup, he doesn't know—"

"Everlee."

One word. She stopped.

I opened my mouth to say the rest of it—quietly, precisely, the way I handle everything—when Finn stepped between us.

I felt him before I saw him. The Alpha aura hit first, that wall of compressed authority that every pack member learns to read like weather. But this wasn't directed at a rogue. It wasn't directed at an intruder.

It was directed at me.

"Stand down." His voice dropped into the Alpha tone—that register that doesn't ask, doesn't negotiate, that reaches into the wolf-brain and commands. "You're embarrassing yourself in front of the pups, Meredith. Let it go."

The bond between us—eight years old, forged in silver and moonlight and a marking ceremony where he had wept, actually wept—made a sound.

I don't have another word for it. A sound. Like a hairline fracture running the length of a load-bearing wall. I felt it in my sternum, in the mark on my neck, in the space behind my eyes.

Around us, thirty wolves flinched in unison. Pack members who had been mid-conversation went still. Someone dropped a cup. I saw Elena—senior warrior, the best I had trained—go rigid across the room, her hand pressed flat to her chest like she was checking for a wound.

Everlee had gone the color of ash.

Finn held my gaze. His jaw was set. He was still broadcasting the Alpha tone, still pressing it against me like a hand on a throat, and I could feel it trying to find purchase—trying to reach the wolf that had always been silent inside me and use her absence as a lever.

There was no lever. There was only me.

I looked at him for four seconds. I counted.

Then I set the mating cuffs on the altar table. Gently. Right in the center, where the moonlight could find them.

I walked away through the crowd, which parted without being asked.

The pack archive was empty by midnight. I had waited.

The sigil lock on the lower cabinet was keyed to my bloodline—I had installed it the day Finn and I were mated, a reflex of caution I had never been able to explain even to myself. No one had ever asked about it. Not in eight years.

I pressed my palm to the seal and felt it release.

The Mate Covenant scroll was exactly where I had placed it. Old paper, older ink, the kind of document that carries weight in the way that living things carry weight—not because of what it says but because of what it means that it exists at all.

I unrolled it on the archive table and read the betrayal clause in full.

I had read it before, years ago, in the abstract way you read emergency protocols you expect never to need. Now I read every word like I was memorizing terrain.

The clause was ancient. No Alpha in living pack memory had survived it intact. The penalties were comprehensive: tribunal before assembled allied witnesses, title review, territory reparation, bond dissolution under pack-law authority rather than personal choice. It required documented violations. It required a Luna willing to invoke it.

I photographed every page with my phone. Twelve photographs. I checked each one for clarity before I moved to the next.

When I was done, I rolled the scroll back exactly as I had found it, replaced it in the cabinet, and resealed the lock.

The mark on my neck still ached where the bond had cracked. I pressed two fingers against it once, briefly, then dropped my hand.

I did not go back to the quarters I shared with Finn that night.

I sat in the archive chair with my phone in my lap and the photographs already backed up to three separate locations, and I thought about the sound the bond had made, and about the door in my chest that was still straining against its frame.

Downstairs, I could hear Finn's voice in the corridor—low, indulgent, the tone he used with Everlee—and the soft answering sound of her laugh.
