Chapter 4

The cabin smelled like old wood and dust and the faint, medicinal tang of the salve I'd been using on my hand. It wasn't mine. I'd found it through a contact of a contact—a she-wolf who owed someone who owed someone else—on unclaimed territory where no pack's scent markers reached. No one asked questions. No one came by. It was exactly what I needed.

Barnaby was asleep across my feet, his weight warm and solid. I sat on the edge of the cot in the dark and ran my unbandaged fingers along his ears in slow, repetitive strokes. The motion was automatic. Soothing in a way nothing else was.

The silence inside my mind was the worst part.

Worse than the burn that still throbbed under fresh dressings. Worse than the memory of Evander's hand shoving me into the doorframe. Worse than the hollow cold where the incomplete mark had been.

My wolf was gone.

Not dormant. Not sulking. *Gone.* The space where her voice had lived—sharp and furious and mine—was just empty now. A wound with no visible surface. I'd spent three years hearing her commentary on every decision, every slight, every moment Ryleigh engineered to make me smaller. And now there was nothing. Just my own thoughts, echoing in a space that used to hold two.

I pressed my thumb into the soft fur behind Barnaby's ear and focused on his breathing. In. Out. Steady.

I would not collapse.

I had left Ironveil with a plan: get distance, let the blight do its work, disappear. Simple. Clean. But sitting alone in a borrowed cabin with no wolf and no bond and nothing but the slow burn of a silver scar, I was starting to understand that revenge and healing were not the same thing.

I didn't know how to do the second part.

The knock came just after dawn.

I was awake already—I'd been awake most of the night—so I heard the footsteps on the porch before the knock landed. Deliberate. Not trying to sneak. Barnaby's head came up, ears forward, but he didn't bark. He knew the difference between a threat and a visitor.

I stood, wrapped my burned hand carefully, and opened the door.

The wolf on the other side was mid-forties, lean, with the kind of face that had seen too many border skirmishes and not enough sleep. I recognized him after a second. Caden. Alpha of a small pack two territories east of Ironveil. I'd stabilized his water sources two years ago during a blight surge that had nearly killed half his omegas. He'd never known my name. I'd made sure of that.

He looked at me for a long moment, his gaze careful and assessing, and then dipped his head in a gesture that was more respect than submission.

"Hannah," he said quietly. "May I come in?"

I stepped aside.

He entered slowly, his movements controlled in the way wolves move when they're trying not to spook someone. Barnaby padded over to sniff his boots. Caden scratched behind his ears without breaking eye contact with me.

"How did you find me?" I asked.

He pulled a folded piece of paper from his jacket pocket and set it on the small table by the window. "Lower-ranked wolves talk. Border territories remember the healer who saved their land. When word spread that you'd left Ironveil, people started asking questions."

I looked at the paper but didn't touch it. "And?"

"And I owed you," he said simply. "So I found you."

He didn't sit. He stood with his hands loose at his sides, waiting. Not pushing. I appreciated that more than I could say.

I crossed my arms, careful not to jostle my injured hand. "What do you want?"

"To give you information," Caden said. "And a choice."

He gestured to the paper on the table. I picked it up with my good hand and unfolded it.

It was an access token. Heavy card stock, embossed with a silver seal I recognized immediately: the Shadowcrest crest. The regional Pack Summit.

"The Summit is in two weeks," Caden said. "Hosted by the Lycan King himself. Every ranked Alpha in the Northeast will be there."

I stared at the token. My thumb traced the edge of the embossed seal. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because Evander plans to attend," Caden said, his voice flat. "With Ryleigh. He's presenting her as his new Luna. He's looking for political alliances to compensate for Ironveil's collapsing territory."

Something cold and sharp turned over in my chest.

Caden watched me carefully. "I obtained that token at personal political risk. If you want to go, you can. If you don't, burn it. Either way, I owed you the choice."

I looked down at the token in my hand. The Shadowcrest crest gleamed faintly in the dim light. The Lycan King. Every ranked Alpha. Evander and Ryleigh, parading a stolen bond before the most powerful wolves in the region.

My wolf was silent. My bond was severed. My hand still burned.

But I was not dead.

I set the token on the table, ran my unbandaged fingers along Barnaby's ears one more time, and met Caden's eyes.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

He nodded once, turned, and left.

I stood in the doorway and watched him disappear into the trees. Then I closed the door, locked it, and picked up the Summit token again.

I held it for a long time.

Then I set it down, walked to the small mirror above the sink, and looked at myself for the first time since the rejection. My face was thinner. Pale. The hollow where the incomplete mark had been was just a faint shadow on my neck now, barely visible.

I looked like someone who had survived something.

I looked like someone who was not done yet.

I turned away from the mirror, sat back down on the cot, and pulled Barnaby close. He settled against my side with a contented sigh, and I pressed my face into his fur and let myself breathe.

Two weeks.

I had two weeks to decide if I was going to walk back into a room full of wolves who had watched me be destroyed, and stand in front of the mate who had destroyed me.

Two weeks to decide if I was going to let them see what I had become in the silence.
