Chapter 5

The Summit hall was larger than I expected. Vaulted ceilings. Stone columns that looked like they'd been standing since before the packs had names. Chandeliers hung low enough to catch the light but high enough that no wolf felt caged. The air smelled like power—leather, expensive cologne, and the particular musk of too many Alphas in one enclosed space.

I stood just inside the side entrance Caden had marked on the map, Barnaby pressed close to my left leg, and let myself look.

The hall was full. Delegations clustered in loose territorial groups, each Alpha surrounded by their ranked wolves like planets with moons. I recognized some of them from old alliance meetings Evander had dragged me to—back when I was allowed to attend as his mate, before Ryleigh decided I made him look weak by standing too close. They didn't recognize me. I had dressed to be invisible: dark jeans, a plain sweater, my hair pulled back. No pack markings. No jewelry. Nothing that signaled rank. The bandage on my dominant hand was the only thing that marked me as anything other than background.

I moved slowly through the crowd, keeping to the edges. Barnaby stayed tight against my leg, his body warm and solid. No one stopped me. A few wolves glanced over—saw the bandage, saw the dog, dismissed me as someone's unimportant plus-one—and looked away.

I was good at being invisible. Three years of practice.

At the far end of the hall, the Lycan royal platform rose above the crowd. Three thrones. Empty for now. The Shadowcrest crest carved into the stone behind them, massive and unmistakable. I stared at it for longer than I meant to. Something in my chest pulled tight, then released. My wolf, still silent, stirred faintly. Not waking. Just... aware.

I turned away and kept moving.

That's when I saw them.

Evander stood near the center of the hall, surrounded by a small knot of mid-ranking Alphas. He was working the room the way he always did—performative confidence, Alpha tone deployed just casually enough to remind everyone he could use it, one hand gesturing as he made some point about border security. He looked good. Rested. His jacket was tailored. His posture was easy.

And Ryleigh was on his arm.

She wore my cloak.

I stopped walking. Barnaby stopped with me, his nose nudging my hand. I didn't move. I just looked.

The cloak was mine. I had spent two months hand-weaving the protective sigils into the fabric, choosing each thread for its resonance, aligning the patterns so they would hold against blight and ill-intent and the particular strain of wolfsbane that bled up from Ironveil's eastern ridge. I had made it for my Mate Ceremony. For the night I was supposed to be crowned Luna.

Ryleigh had stolen it from my quarters. And she'd had it altered.

The seams were crooked where the tailor had taken it in at the waist. The sigils no longer aligned. The fabric hung wrong across her shoulders, bunching slightly at the back. She looked beautiful anyway. She always did. That was the thing about Ryleigh—she could wear a lie and make it look like truth.

She was laughing at something one of the Alphas said, her hand resting lightly on Evander's forearm, and I felt nothing.

No. That wasn't true. I felt tired.

I started to turn away—to move deeper into the crowd, to find a corner where I could watch without being seen—but Evander's head came up. His eyes swept the room in that restless Alpha way, scanning for threats or opportunities or whatever it was he always looked for.

And he saw me.

The color drained from his face. Just for a second. Then the mask snapped back into place—jaw tight, shoulders squared, eyes hard—and he recovered so fast I almost thought I'd imagined it.

Almost.

He said something low to Ryleigh. She turned to look. Her gaze found me across the crowded hall, and her mouth curved into a small, perfect smile.

Evander moved. He stepped away from the Alphas mid-conversation, his hand coming up in a sharp gesture I recognized immediately. Summoning. Two Summit guards in formal Lycan livery peeled away from their posts near the platform and started toward him.

I stayed exactly where I was.

Evander met the guards halfway, his voice carrying just far enough for the wolves nearest him to hear. "There's a rogue in the hall. No pack standing. She needs to be escorted out."

The guards looked past him. At me. At Barnaby. At the bandage on my hand and the plain clothes and the complete absence of any territorial markings.

One of them nodded. They started toward me.

Ryleigh turned to the ranked she-wolf beside her—someone I didn't recognize, Luna of some northern pack—and murmured something behind her hand. The words carried. They were meant to. "Poor thing. She couldn't accept it. I heard she's been... unstable."

The Luna made a soft, sympathetic sound.

I watched the guards approach. They moved carefully, not aggressive but not gentle either. Professional. I could see the calculation in their eyes: lone wolf, no visible rank, probably here to make a scene. Get her out quietly before it becomes a problem.

They stopped three feet away.

"Ma'am," the taller one said, his tone polite but firm. "You'll need to come with us."

I looked at him. Then past him, to Evander, who was watching from across the room with his jaw set and his hands loose at his sides. Ready to intervene if I made this difficult. Ready to use his Alpha tone if I forced him to.

I looked at Ryleigh, still smiling that small, perfect smile.

I looked at the crowd of ranked wolves pretending not to watch while absolutely watching.

Then I looked back at the guard and said, very quietly, "No."

His eyes narrowed. "Ma'am—"

"I'm not leaving," I said. My voice was calm. Level. The same tone I'd used to refuse Evander's Alpha command on the night he shoved me into the doorframe. "If you want me out of this hall, you'll have to remove me."

The second guard shifted his weight. His hand moved toward my arm.

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I stood still, my uninjured hand resting lightly on Barnaby's head, and waited.

Because I had already decided.

I was not leaving.

And I had nothing left to lose by making them drag me out in front of every Alpha in the room.
