His Mistress Called Me a Nanny Until My Husband Arrived Chapter 1

The elevator doors opened on the 42nd floor, and I smoothed my jacket once before stepping out. Glass walls. Steel accents. The kind of conference room built to make people feel small before they even sat down. I didn't feel small. I felt ready.

My assistant, Nia, walked half a step behind me with the folders. "They're already seated," she said quietly. "The VP from the other side just walked in five minutes ago."

"Good," I said. "Let them wait."

I pushed open the door myself.

And there he was.

Kameron Stewart. Five years older, a little more gray at the temples, the same expensive watch flashing under the lights. He looked up from his tablet, and for one full second, his face just... stopped. Like someone had hit pause on him.

Then it clicked back into motion. His eyes swept down — my hand first, bare, no ring — then up over my suit, simple and tailored, nothing flashy. I watched him build a story in real time behind his eyes. I could almost hear the gears turning.

"Blair." He said my name like he was testing it. "Blair Jensen."

"Mr. Stewart." I took my seat across from him and set my folder down, squared to the edge of the table. "Shall we begin?"

Beside him, Maci Daniels sat with a legal pad she wasn't writing on, her blouse just a little too fitted for a nine a.m. meeting. She smiled at me, soft and wounded, like I'd already hurt her somehow.

"It's great to see you're still working, Blair," Kameron said, once the introductions were done and the lawyers had stopped talking. He said it warm. Friendly, even. Like it cost him nothing. "I mean that. Given everything."

"Given everything," I repeated, and let the silence sit there until he had to look away first.

He recovered fast. He always did. "You know," he leaned forward, forearms on the table, voice dropping like we were the only two in the room, "if this deal doesn't work out for you over there, my door's always open. I could use someone with your instincts. Back under me."

A few people at the table shifted in their seats. Nia's pen stopped moving.

I smiled at him. The kind of smile I'd practiced in mirrors for exactly no one but myself. "That's generous," I said. "But I don't think I've ever done my best work under anyone."

His jaw ticked. Just slightly. Maci's pen finally touched the pad, scratching out something I doubted was notes.

Then I opened my folder and got to work.

I took apart his valuation model clause by clause. I found the gap in his supply projections he was hoping no one would ask about. I asked him, politely, to repeat a number he'd misquoted, and watched him realize halfway through his sentence that he was digging himself deeper. By the end, his associate was passing him notes under the table, and Maci had stopped pretending to write anything at all.

When I stood to leave, Kameron stood too, fast, like his body moved before his mind caught up.

"Blair." Just my name again. Like it used to mean something.

I turned. Waited.

He didn't say anything else. He just looked at me, searching my face for the crack he was sure had to be there. I watched him look for tears that weren't coming, for a flinch, for anything that told him I was still the woman who used to fold herself smaller so he'd have more room. He didn't find it. I saw the exact moment that unsettled him more than anything I'd said across that table.

"Have a good afternoon," I said, and walked out.

I didn't think about him again until Nia mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that his office had requested background materials on our negotiating team that evening. I should have guessed what that meant.

At home, after Noel was asleep and the apartment was quiet except for the hum of the dishwasher, my phone buzzed. Unknown number. I didn't answer. Whoever it was called Maci's number twenty minutes later — I only knew because a mutual contact mentioned it to me weeks after, laughing about it like it was gossip and not a grenade.

I can imagine how it went, though. I know Kameron. I know exactly the tone he uses when he thinks he's found leverage.

"She's got a kid," he probably said. "No husband on record. Nothing. You believe that?"

And Maci, I'm sure, made her voice go soft and pitying, the way she always did right before she twisted the knife. "Oh, poor thing," she would have said. "I just hope she's managing okay. Must be so hard, doing it all alone."

They didn't know anything. Not about Grey. Not about the ring I kept in a drawer instead of on my finger, not because I'd lost it, but because some things you protect by hiding them, not flaunting them. Not about the six p.m. phone call I never missed, or the little boy down the hall who fell asleep clutching a wooden chess pawn like it was a stuffed animal.

They thought they'd found my weakness.

They had no idea they were about to hand me a stage.
