Chapter 3

The first call came seventy-two hours after I left.

I didn't answer it. I was three towns over by then, in a roadside motel with peeling wallpaper and a shower that coughed rust-colored water. Barnaby was sprawled across the second bed, his paws twitching in sleep. My phone buzzed on the nightstand—Evander's name lit up the screen—and I watched it vibrate until it went dark.

He called again six minutes later. Then again. Then Silas called. Then a number I didn't recognize.

I turned the phone off and went back to wrapping my hand.

The burn was healing slower than it should. Silver wounds always did, but this one had gone deeper than bone—it had seared through three years of suppressed instinct and left a scar that my wolf, still silent inside me, refused to touch. I could feel the absence of her like a hollow in my chest. Not gone. Just... distant. Turned away.

I didn't blame her.

The second day, I drove north. No destination. Just distance. Barnaby rode in the passenger seat with his head out the window, ears flapping, and for the first time in three years I felt something close to calm. Not peace. Calm. The kind that comes after you've stopped fighting a current and let it carry you somewhere new.

I didn't think about Ironveil. I didn't let myself.

But on the third morning, I woke up to seventeen missed calls and a voicemail from Silas that I played on speaker while I made instant coffee in the motel kitchenette.

"Hannah." His voice was tight. Controlled in the way wolves get when they're trying not to sound desperate. "The eastern border water sources are... compromised. Grey-green discoloration. Spreading upstream. We've got omegas sick, two deltas down, and no one can figure out why the containment isn't holding."

A pause. I heard him breathe.

"If you know anything—if there's something we're missing—call me back."

I deleted the voicemail.

I knew exactly what was happening. Wolfsbane blight moved like rot through undefended territory—slow at first, then exponential once it found purchase. The ward I'd maintained for three years hadn't just been decorative. It had been the only thing standing between Ironveil and the contaminated groundwater that bled up from the old mining tunnels beneath the eastern ridge. Every morning before dawn, I had walked those anchor points and reinforced the threads. Every morning, invisible.

Now the threads were gone. And the blight was doing what blight does.

I sipped my coffee and felt nothing.

Barnaby padded over and pressed his nose into my knee. I scratched behind his ears with my good hand and looked out the motel window at the gray sky. Somewhere south, Ironveil was unraveling. Somewhere south, Evander was realizing that every achievement he'd claimed had been built on a foundation I could remove.

I should have felt satisfaction. Vindication. Something.

Instead, I just felt tired.

The calls kept coming. I let them pile up. On the fourth day, Evander left a voicemail that I almost didn't listen to—but curiosity, or maybe some last shred of masochism, made me press play.

"Hannah." His voice was different. Rougher. The Alpha tone stripped away. "I don't know where you are. I don't know if you're even listening to this. But the pack is... we need you to come back. Just long enough to—"

He stopped. I heard him exhale, hard.

"Please."

I deleted it.

Then I turned my phone off, packed my bag, and checked out of the motel. Barnaby hopped into the car without prompting, and I drove north until the highway signs stopped showing towns I recognized.

I didn't know where I was going. I just knew it wasn't back.

Meanwhile—though I wouldn't learn this until much later—Silas was sitting in Evander's office with three years of territory reports spread across the desk. He'd pulled every maintenance log, every water quality assessment, every illness record from the pack archives. And he'd started comparing dates.

The pattern was undeniable. Every time Hannah had been off-territory—visiting her father, attending a regional summit, recovering from a training injury Ryleigh had engineered—the blight had crept back in. Small surges. Easily missed if you weren't looking. And every time Hannah returned, the contamination receded.

Silas stared at the reports for a long time.

Then he stood up, walked to Evander's office, and said the thing no one had been willing to say out loud for three years.

"It was her. The entire time. Every ward, every clean water source, every stable boundary—it was all her."

Evander, standing at the window with his back to the room, said nothing.

Behind him, Ryleigh sat in the Luna's chair wearing the ceremonial cloak she'd stolen from Hannah's quarters. She'd had it taken in at the waist. The seams were crooked where the tailor had worked too fast, and the protective sigils Hannah had woven into the fabric no longer aligned properly.

She looked beautiful.

And the pack was rotting from the inside out.
