Chapter 2

I did not sleep.

I sat on the edge of the guest cot in the healer's wing—Iris had cleaned and wrapped my hand without meeting my eyes—and watched the window turn from black to gray to the pale, bloodless color of a winter dawn. My burned palm throbbed under the dressing in a slow, insistent pulse that matched my heartbeat. My wolf paced inside me, silent and coiled, saying nothing.

She didn't need to. We both knew what was coming.

At 6:15, Silas knocked on the door. He would not look at me directly. "Alpha wants everyone assembled on the pack house steps."

"I know," I said.

He hesitated. His hand tightened on the doorframe. For a moment I thought he might say something—an apology, a warning, anything—but his throat worked once, and he stepped back into the hallway.

I walked out to meet my rejection in the same clothes I had worn to my Mate Ceremony.

The assembled pack filled the courtyard in ranked order. Silas at the front. Trent behind him. The deltas in tight rows, the omegas gathered at the back. Every face I had healed, fed, trained, or defended in three years of invisible work. Not one of them met my eyes.

Evander stood at the top of the pack house steps. Ryleigh stood behind him, one hand resting delicately on his forearm, her hair loose over her shoulders. She had put on lipstick.

I stopped at the base of the steps and waited.

He did not preface it. He did not soften it. He spoke the words in his full Alpha voice, so that they carried to the farthest ranked wolf and left no room for question.

"I, Evander, Alpha of Ironveil Pack, reject you, Hannah, as my mate and Luna."

The incomplete mark on the side of my neck went cold.

It was the coldness of a door being shut on a room I had lived in for three years. Then it went hollow—a scooped-out absence where something warm had lived and now did not. My wolf, who had been coiled and silent all night, made one small sound inside my chest, and then went quiet in a way I had never felt before. Not asleep. Not sulking. Gone.

The mind-link snapped dark like a candle pinched between two fingers.

I felt the loss in stages. The bond going ice-cold. The mark going hollow. My wolf going silent. The mind-link going dark. Four separate severings, one after another, in the space of a single breath. My knees did not buckle. My face did not change. I stood on the frost-hard gravel with my burned hand cradled against my ribs and let it happen.

Evander was waiting for me to react. I could see it in the small muscle at the corner of his jaw. He wanted tears. He wanted argument. He wanted a scene that would justify the story he had already written about me in his head.

I met his eyes.

I held them.

One long, unhurried moment—long enough to feel Ryleigh's fingers tighten on his sleeve, long enough for Silas to shift his weight, long enough for the wind to move once through the courtyard—and Evander looked away first.

I turned and walked toward the pack house cellar.

No one stopped me. No one spoke. I heard the crowd begin to break up behind me only after I was well past them, the low murmur of wolves who did not know whether they had just witnessed a mercy or a crime.

The cellar door was locked from the outside. I broke the lock with my uninjured hand—one clean twist, the metal splintering with a small dry crack—and pushed the door open.

Barnaby was on his feet before I reached the cage. He was not barking. He never barked in the cellar; Ryleigh had made sure of that. He pressed his entire body against the bars, tail beating against the stone wall in a rhythm so hopeful I had to stop for a second and steady my breath.

I broke the cage lock too.

He came out of it in a rush of warm gold, hurling himself against my legs so hard I almost went over. I knelt on the stone floor, my ruined hand held carefully away from him, and pressed my face into the fur behind his ears. He smelled like dust and cold cement and, faintly, still, like the coat closet at home. I breathed him in for exactly three breaths. That was what I allowed myself.

Then I stood up.

"Come on," I said quietly. "We have work to do."

The ward-dissolution ritual takes six hours when performed correctly. It has thirty-seven anchor points threaded through Ironveil's borders—rivers, ridge lines, the old oak at the eastern boundary, the stone cairn above the training ground, the well behind the pack house. I had set every one of them myself, in the first three months of my bond, when I still believed that giving everything invisibly was the same as being loved.

I unmade them one at a time.

I worked with my uninjured hand. I whispered the counter-phrases in the old tongue at each anchor. I felt the healing threads loosen and unravel and go slack, one by one, releasing three years of my own power back into the air like breath fogging in cold. Barnaby walked beside me the entire time, close enough that his shoulder brushed my thigh at every step.

Dawn was gray at the eastern ridge when I dismantled the last anchor. I felt the ward collapse inward, a soft internal sigh, and then—nothing. The territory stood undefended for the first time in three years.

I turned my back on Ironveil and walked, Barnaby at my heel, toward the road.

Behind us, in the eastern stream where the first anchor had lived, the water was already beginning to darken.
