Chapter 2

The fever came on the third day after Maren cut the silver cuff from my wrist.

I didn't call it a fever at first. I called it exhaustion, then chills, then the flu, because I was still the woman who tended other people's injuries and diagnosed her own last. But by the fourth afternoon, the skin over my sternum was hot enough to hurt, and my bones ached in a way that felt less like illness and more like architecture being rearranged.

Maren pressed two fingers to the inside of my wrist and didn't say anything for a long time.

"What?" I asked.

"Your pulse is wrong," she said. "Not weak. Wrong. Like there's a second one underneath it, keeping its own time."

I laughed, or tried to. It came out as a cough.

By nightfall, the rain on the safe house roof sounded like someone throwing gravel. Every drop hit its own separate note. I could hear the Silverpine warriors two rooms away shifting their weight on the floorboards. I could hear Maren's breath. I could hear the frost forming on the window in tiny, brittle crackles.

I closed my eyes and Sable was right there, pressed against the back of my ribs, waiting.

Then it happened.

My spine broke first. That's the only way I know how to say it. Something inside me lengthened wrong, and the cot splintered under me, and my scream came out of a throat that was already changing shape. My hands—my hands were not hands. Fur pushed up through skin like a second self forcing its way to the surface. I heard the floorboards tear before I understood I was tearing them.

And then I was standing.

On four legs.

In the wreckage of a room that had, thirty seconds ago, been holding a woman.

I could see my own shoulder in the shattered mirror across the room. Silver-white. Massive. My head was almost level with the top of the doorframe, and the fur along my back caught the lamplight and threw it back so brightly the room looked lit from inside me.

The Silverpine wolves in the hallway dropped their heads. I heard it—the soft rustle of six warriors lowering their gaze at once, without a word.

And Rhys was in the doorway.

He had one hand braced against the frame. His knuckles were white. His face had gone very still in a way I had learned, in three days, meant he was holding something enormous behind his teeth.

He breathed in.

Something passed across his expression I had no name for. His pupils blew wide. His grip on the doorframe tightened until I heard the wood creak.

Inside me, Sable made a sound that was not quite a growl. Recognition. Not from me—from her.

I didn't understand what I was looking at yet. I only knew that whatever had just moved through him, he had chosen not to let it reach me.

---

The kitchen didn't survive my first voluntary shift.

I came out of it on all fours in the middle of what used to be a table, breathing hard, human again, wrapped in a blanket Maren tossed over my shoulders without comment. Sable was still awake in my chest, and she was furious—at the wolfsbane, at the five years, at Bentley, at me for not hearing her sooner. Her rage moved through my body like weather. My hands shook. My stomach turned over so hard I had to sit down on the broken table and press my forehead to my knees.

"I don't know how to hold her," I said into the blanket.

"You will," Maren said, and kept writing in her notebook.

Rhys started training me the next morning.

He did not treat me like a novice. He treated me like something that had been caged for a decade and needed to be reminded what its own weight could do. He drilled me on breath control before shift, on the difference between letting Sable rise and shoving her down, on how to stand in my own body when she wanted to run.

I snapped at him on the second day. "I don't need a handler."

He didn't blink. "You don't need a handler. You need someone who won't break when you hit too hard."

I stared at him for a long moment. The wind moved through the pines behind him. I could smell woodsmoke and something clean underneath it, something I had not let myself name yet.

I nodded.

We kept going.

---

The fifth night, we ran drills in the frozen tree line behind the safe house. Snow up to my knees in human form. Breath ghosting.

I was halfway into a controlled shift when Sable went still.

Not the stillness of focus. The stillness of *listening.* She pulled inside me—not toward the drill, not toward the ridge we'd been circling. Toward Rhys. A biological insistence that stepped clean past my rational mind and set up a hum behind my sternum I could not argue with.

I stopped.

Rhys read the change in my posture and went quiet, the way he did.

I made myself look at him. Snow on the shoulders of his jacket. Steam on his breath.

"What is your wolf telling you," I said. "Right now."

He was silent for a beat that went on too long.

Then: "That you're mine. That you've always been mine."

Sable howled against my sternum so hard I felt it in my teeth.

I took a step back.

I didn't mean to. My body did it before my mind could catch up—one small backward step in the snow, and it was already done, and he saw it. His eyes tracked the movement and went carefully neutral.

He did not close the distance.

"The bond," he said, quieter, "requires nothing you don't choose. I've been waiting ten years, Florence. I can wait longer."

Then he turned back to the drill.

As if the ground beneath both of us had not just moved.

I stood in the snow with Sable roaring inside me, and I pressed two fingers to the inside of my left wrist, over the scar where the cuff had been, and I did not know yet what I was going to do.
