Chapter 3

The Lycan Court arrived on the seventh day.

I knew something had shifted when the Silverpine Alpha appeared at the safe house door before dawn, his posture different—not tense, but carefully arranged. He asked me to dress in something formal. He did not explain why.

Maren handed me a simple gray dress and helped me pin my hair back. My hands were shaking. Sable was restless inside me, pacing.

"What's happening?" I asked.

"The Lycan King," Maren said quietly. "He's coming to see you."

My stomach dropped. "Why?"

She didn't answer. She just fastened the last pin and stepped back.

Rhys was waiting in the corridor when I emerged. He looked at me for a long moment, something unreadable moving behind his eyes, then nodded once and led me toward the main hall.

The aura hit me before I saw anyone.

It was not like Bentley's Alpha tone—that performative boom, the pressure designed to remind you who held power. This was different. Heavier. It didn't announce itself. It simply existed, the way gravity exists, and everything in the room rearranged itself accordingly.

I stopped in the doorway.

The hall was full of wolves I didn't recognize. Warriors in formal dress, standing at attention. The Silverpine Alpha stood near the far wall, his head slightly lowered. And at the center of the room, flanked by two guards, was a man whose presence made every other wolf in the space look smaller.

The Lycan King.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, his hair silver at the temples. His face was carved by decades of command—sharp lines, a mouth that looked like it rarely smiled. He wore dark formal robes, and when he turned toward me, the room went silent.

I forced myself to step inside.

He started walking toward me. Measured steps. His gaze locked on mine.

Then he stopped.

Mid-stride.

His nostrils flared. His entire body went still in a way that made the air feel thinner. One of the guards behind him—a man with graying hair and a scar across his jaw—shifted forward slightly, his hand moving toward his weapon, then stopping when the King raised one hand.

The King's face did something I didn't have words for. The carved composure cracked. His eyes went wide, then wet, and his breath caught audibly.

He crossed the remaining distance in three strides.

Before I could speak, he took my face in both hands. His palms were warm. Rough. His grip was careful, like he thought I might shatter.

He breathed in.

Deep. Deliberate. His eyes closed.

When he opened them again, they were full of something that looked like grief and relief tangled together so tightly I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.

"Elara," he said. His voice cracked on the name. "Elara Vael."

I stared at him. "That's not my name."

"It was," he said. "Before the raid. Before they took you." His thumbs brushed my cheekbones. "You were six months old. I searched for eighteen years. I never stopped."

The room tilted.

I heard Sable inside me—not snarling, not pacing. Listening. Waiting.

"I don't understand," I said.

The King's hands dropped to my shoulders. "You are my daughter, Florence. My blood. The rogue raid that took you—" His voice broke again. He cleared his throat, visibly forcing the sovereign composure back into place. "I have mourned you every day since. And you are alive."

I couldn't breathe.

The guard with the scar—Idris, I would learn later—was staring at the King with an expression I couldn't parse. Shock, maybe. Or recognition of something he had been watching for two decades without understanding.

The King pulled me into an embrace. His arms were solid. His chest rose and fell unevenly against my shoulder.

"You're safe now," he said into my hair. "I will never let anyone harm you again."

I stood there, wrapped in the arms of a man I didn't know, and felt the world I thought I understood dissolve completely.

---

When the King finally released me, the hall was still silent.

I turned, instinctively, toward Rhys.

He was standing near the far wall. Every warrior in the room—Silverpine and Lycan alike—had their heads lowered. The Silverpine Alpha was bowing. Fully. His forehead nearly level with his knees.

Rhys accepted the deference with a stillness that told me, even through my shock, that he had done this before.

I walked toward him. My legs felt unsteady.

"Who are you," I said. My voice came out flat. Stripped.

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, very quietly, "Rhys Everhart. Lycan Prince. Heir to Lycan sovereignty."

The man who smuggled me out of Shadowridge in the bed of a pickup truck. The man who trained me in the frozen tree line. The man whose wolf had recognized mine before I even knew what I was.

The highest-ranking wolf in the world.

I didn't shout. I didn't cry. I turned and walked out of the hall.

---

The courtyard was frozen. Snow piled against the stone walls. I stood in the center of it, pressing two fingers to the scar on my wrist where the silver cuff had been, and I tried to make the pieces fit.

Lycan Princess.

Daughter of the Lycan King.

Not wolfless. Not weak. Not disposable.

I heard footsteps behind me. I didn't turn.

"Florence."

Rhys's voice. Low. Careful.

I kept my back to him. "Did you know what I was when you put me in that truck?"

Silence.

Then: "No. I knew what you were to me. The bloodline, the King, the title—those came after."

I turned. He was standing three paces back, his hands loose at his sides, his expression open in a way I had never seen before.

"You've been lying to me," I said.

"I withheld my rank," he said. "I never lied about the bond."

I stared at him. Sable was quiet inside me. Listening.

"Why," I said.

He exhaled. "Because I didn't want you to feel you had no choice. Because rank complicates everything. Because—" He stopped. Started again. "Because I've been waiting ten years for you to be free, and I didn't want the first thing you saw when you looked at me to be a crown."

I looked at him for a long time. The snow fell between us. My breath ghosted.

Then I walked past him, back toward the safe house.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I lay in the narrow cot, staring at the ceiling, Sable restless under my ribs. Around midnight, I got up and walked down the hall to the room where Rhys was staying.

The door was cracked. I pushed it open.

He was asleep on his back, one arm thrown over his head. His breathing was even. Peaceful.

I crossed the room. Knelt beside the cot.

There was a cord around his neck. I had noticed it before but never asked. I reached out, very carefully, and lifted it.

A pendant slid free. Small. Silver. Engraved with a wolf mid-leap, surrounded by a crescent moon.

I held it in my palm.

It was warm from his skin.

I looked at his face—still asleep, unguarded—and I understood, without language, how long he had been carrying this. How many years. How many silent nights.

I set the pendant back against his chest and stood.

When I reached the door, his voice came from behind me, rough with sleep.

"Florence."

I stopped. Didn't turn.

"I commissioned that pendant when we were sixteen," he said quietly. "At the juvenile training program. I didn't know why then. I just knew I couldn't let you go."

I pressed two fingers to my wrist. The scar was still warm.

"Goodnight, Rhys," I said.

And I walked back to my room, the hum behind my sternum louder than it had ever been.
