After My Alpha Chose His Mistress and Heir Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I know because I was staring at the banquet hall clock when Bentley mounted the ceremonial platform—not alone, but with Hailey Sullivan on his arm. She wore red. Her hand rested on the swell of her stomach. Three hundred pack members went silent.

I stood in my Luna's dress near the front, champagne glass halfway to my lips, and the first thing I registered was not panic but confusion. Bentley was supposed to give the opening toast. I had reviewed the schedule with him that morning. He had kissed my forehead and told me I looked beautiful.

Then he opened his mouth, and the words came out formal and final.

"I, Bentley Harrison, Alpha of Shadowridge, reject you, Florence Bennett, as my mate and Luna."

The mate mark on my neck went ice-cold first. A spreading numbness, like frostbite working inward. Then it went hollow—not painful in the way I expected, but worse. Like a door slamming shut in an empty room. The bond didn't snap. It just… stopped.

My glass hit the floor. I didn't feel my knees give out, but suddenly the stone was against my cheek and the ceiling was spinning and someone was screaming—high and raw and animal—and it took me three full seconds to realize the sound was coming from inside my own chest.

Sable.

My wolf—who had been silent for five years, a whisper I'd stopped straining to hear—slammed against my ribcage like she was trying to claw her way out through bone. The fury was so sudden and so huge I couldn't breathe around it. My vision went white at the edges. I tasted copper.

No one moved toward me.

I lay there on the banquet floor, my dress pooling around me, and watched Bentley's polished shoes descend the platform steps. He walked past me. Hailey followed, one hand still on her stomach, her expression carefully neutral.

Katherine—Bentley's mother, the Elder Mother—sat at the high table with her hands folded in her lap. She looked at me the way you look at a stain finally removed.

I don't know how long I stayed on that floor. Long enough for the pack to resume their conversations in low, careful voices. Long enough for someone to step over me on their way to the wine table.

When I finally pulled myself upright, the mark on my neck was still cold. I pressed two fingers to it. Nothing. Just skin.

I made it to a side corridor before my legs quit again. I slid down the wall and sat there in the dark, my breath coming in short, broken gasps. Sable was still thrashing inside me—furious, betrayed, and trapped. I didn't know how to hold her. I didn't know how to hold myself.

The champagne glass I'd dropped had shattered. I could see a shard of it glinting near the corridor entrance, catching the light from the banquet hall. I stared at it and thought, very clearly: *I should have known.*

But I hadn't.

I had spent five years managing the pack house. Tending wounded warriors. Enduring Katherine's quiet contempt at every meal. I had told myself the bond was enough. That devotion could substitute for equality.

I had been wrong.

---

I don't know how much time passed before I heard footsteps.

Heavy. Deliberate.

Bentley appeared at the end of the corridor, his jacket unbuttoned, his expression unreadable.

"Florence."

I didn't answer. My throat was raw.

He crouched in front of me, close enough that I could smell Hailey's perfume layered over his skin. Jasmine and something sharper. It made my stomach turn.

"You need to leave Shadowridge," he said quietly. "Tonight."

I stared at him. "You just rejected me in front of three hundred people."

"I know." He didn't sound apologetic. He sounded… tired. "It's better this way. For both of us."

"Better?" My voice cracked. Sable snarled inside me, and for a second I thought she might force a shift right there in the corridor—but she couldn't. She had never been able to. Five years wolfless. Five years of Katherine's accusations that I was weak, barren, unworthy of the Luna title.

Bentley reached out like he was going to touch my face, then thought better of it. His hand dropped. "Hailey's carrying my heir. The pack needs a bloodline. You understand."

I understood.

I understood that he had chosen her months ago. Maybe years. I understood that the bond I had clung to had been one-sided long before tonight.

I also understood, with a clarity that felt like glass breaking, that I was done.

"Get out," I said.

He stood. Adjusted his cuffs. "I'll have someone bring your things to the border. You'll be gone by morning."

He turned and walked back toward the banquet hall, and I sat there in the dark with the cold mark on my neck and Sable's fury burning a hole through my chest.

I pressed my fingers to my wrist—an old habit, a self-soothing gesture I'd developed without realizing it—and I made myself a promise.

I would leave Shadowridge.

But I would not leave quietly.
