Chapter 3

I spent two nights building the case that would either save me or confirm what Nicolas already believed—that I was disposable.

The cabin table disappeared under layers of paper. On the left: Lena's journal, entries dated and witnessed, a catalog of Eva's cruelty rendered in precise handwriting. On the right: my own records from five years of making myself useful. Territorial dispute resolutions I had drafted under Nicolas's name. Correspondence logs proving I had facilitated agreements he later claimed as his own diplomatic victories. Pack law citations I had memorized and now wrote out longhand, with page numbers and subsection markers.

I was not building an emotional appeal. I was building a legal dismantling.

The bond-withdrawal ache had settled into something I could work through. My wolf was quieter now, not screaming but watchful, like she was waiting for something. I pressed two fingers to the dead mark on my neck—a habit I could not break—and kept writing.

Nicolas would use Alpha tone. I knew him well enough to predict that. He would stand on the platform and deploy that commanding pressure to force submission, to make me kneel before the assembled pack and prove I was exactly what he claimed: wolfless, rankless, unworthy. He had done it before in smaller ways, subtle deployments of authority that I had learned to endure without flinching.

But there was a provision.

I found it on my second night of searching, buried in a subsection on tribunal procedure that most Alphas never bothered to read. Coercive Alpha-tone deployment against a wolf formally invoking defense rights constituted a procedural violation. The accused could cite it. The tribunal could rule it inadmissible. The ruling would go into the record.

I wrote the citation in red ink at the top of my first page. Then I read it three more times to make sure I had not misunderstood.

Lena brought Dara to the cabin the night before the tribunal.

The girl stood in my doorway with her arms wrapped around herself, her eyes too wide, flinching at every sound from the forest outside. Lena stood behind her like a wall, one hand resting on Dara's shoulder.

"She wrote it down," Lena said. "Everything that happened in the common room. She needs to give it to you."

Dara pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket. Her hands shook as she slid it across the table toward me. I unfolded it carefully. The handwriting was unsteady but clear. She had written exactly what Eva said, word for word, and exactly what she had been forced to do afterward. No embellishment. No self-pity. Just the facts.

I read it twice. Then I looked up at her.

"Can you say this aloud?" I asked. "In the tribunal hall. In front of everyone."

Dara went very still. Her breathing quickened. For a long moment, she did not answer.

Then she nodded.

"Yes," she whispered.

I folded the paper and set it with the others. "You'll sit in the third row from the back," I said. "Not the witness bench. Not unless I call you. I don't want Eva looking at you any sooner than necessary."

Dara's shoulders dropped slightly, relief visible in the way she exhaled. Lena squeezed her shoulder once, then guided her back toward the door.

"Three others confirmed," Lena said quietly before leaving. "They'll be there. Second row, left side. You'll know them when you see them."

She left without waiting for my response.

I sat alone at the table, Dara's testimony in front of me, and felt my wolf stir again. Not rage. Not fear. Something colder. Something that felt like teeth waiting to be used.

Nicolas did not sleep the night before the tribunal.

I did not know this from seeing him. I knew it the way I had known things about him for five years through the bond—small sensations that leaked across the connection even when he was not trying to send them. Except the bond was severed now. Dead. The mark on my neck was hollow.

But at three in the morning, lying awake in the cabin, I smelled pine and cold iron.

It was faint. Barely there. Like a scent carried on wind from a long distance, surfacing at the edge of my awareness and then vanishing before I could name it. My wolf went very still. I pressed my fingers to the dead mark and felt nothing. No warmth. No hum. Just scar tissue.

I told myself it was memory. The mind playing tricks after years of conditioning. I turned over and stared at the ceiling until dawn.

The Lycan King's delegation arrived two days before the tribunal.

I heard about it from the kitchen staff when I went to the pack house to retrieve water. Three wolves in formal traveling cloaks, led by a Beta whose aura preceded him into every room. His name was Aldric. He carried himself with the particular stillness of someone who had stood in rooms where catastrophic things happened and learned not to react visibly.

Nicolas received them with performed warmth. I watched from the corridor as he clasped Aldric's forearm and smiled. "An honor," Nicolas said. "Your timing is fortunate. We have a tribunal scheduled—routine pack business, but you're welcome to observe. Diplomatic courtesy."

Aldric inclined his head. "I would be interested," he said. His voice was quiet and precise. "Tribunal proceedings offer insight into pack governance."

Nicolas's smile widened. He was reading this as an opportunity. Lycan court witnesses to his decisive leadership. Proof that Ironridge operated with proper legal structure. He did not see what I saw: the way Aldric's gaze moved across the room, cataloging exits and sight-lines, the way his nostrils flared slightly as he inhaled.

He was searching for something.

I turned and left before Nicolas could notice me watching.

The tribunal was tomorrow. My files were organized. My witnesses were prepared. The red citation sat at the top of my first page like a loaded weapon.

I walked back to the cabin and waited for dawn.
