I stood three rows back in the ceremony hall, surrounded by three hundred wolves whose scent pressed against my skin like humidity. Nicolas was on the platform. The torchlight made his face look carved from something harder than bone. He was looking directly at me when he spoke.

"I, Nicolas, Alpha of Ironridge Pack, reject you, Adeline, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Not painful—just cold, like someone had pressed an ice cube to the skin and then removed it and left the absence behind. Then it went hollow. The warmth that had lived there for five years, the quiet hum I had felt every time Nicolas was near, collapsed inward into nothing. My wolf screamed. She left before I could ask anything else.
