Chapter 4

The great hall was full.

Three hundred wolves. The same number that had watched Nicolas speak the rejection vow. They filled the benches in tight rows, their scents layering the air—anticipation, curiosity, something sharper underneath that might have been fear. I stood at the defense position with my spine straight and my files arranged in front of me, and I did not let myself think about how many eyes were on me.

Nicolas sat in the Alpha's seat, elevated above the rest of the hall. His aura filled the space like a low hum, not aggressive yet but present, a reminder of who held authority here. Eva sat at the witness bench to his right, her posture perfect, her expression carefully neutral. She had dressed in soft colors—cream and pale gold—like someone who wanted to appear reluctant to be here.

Aldric, the Lycan King's Beta, occupied the diplomatic observer's bench near the back. He had not spoken since entering the hall. His face was impassive, his hands folded in his lap, but I had seen the way his nostrils flared slightly when he first walked in. He was scenting the room. Cataloging.

Nicolas began.

"This tribunal convenes under pack law," he said, his voice carrying easily across the hall. "Adeline has invoked her right to defense. I will present the case for her demotion and removal from Ironridge territory. She will be permitted to respond."

He stood. The aura thickened. Several wolves in the front rows shifted uncomfortably.

"Adeline is wolfless," Nicolas continued. "She has no rank, no bloodline claim, no mate bond. For five years, she has occupied space and resources within this pack without contributing the strength that pack unity requires. Her continued presence disrupts our cohesion. It is my judgment, as Alpha, that she be demoted to Omega status and removed from pack territory."

He sat down. The hall was silent.

Eva rose from the witness bench. She moved slowly, her expression pained, like this was difficult for her. "I don't take pleasure in this," she said softly. "But I've observed Adeline's behavior since I arrived. She's isolated herself. She doesn't participate in pack activities. She seems... disconnected. I think this decision, though hard, is what's best for everyone."

She sat down. A few wolves nodded. I saw sympathy on some faces. Eva had played it perfectly.

Nicolas gestured toward me. "You may present your defense."

I picked up the first page. My hands were steady. I had practiced this.

"I invoke pack law, subsection twelve, paragraph four," I said. My voice was quieter than Nicolas's but it carried. "Any wolf accused of failing to contribute to pack welfare has the right to present documented evidence of service rendered. I have that evidence."

I held up the first file. "Territorial dispute resolution, northern border, two years ago. The conflict between Ironridge and the Crescent Pack over hunting grounds. I drafted the agreement that prevented escalation. Alpha Nicolas signed it and presented it as his own diplomatic work."

I set it down and picked up the next one. "Correspondence logs. Three years of letters to allied packs, coordinating trade agreements, managing alliances. I wrote them. I organized them. I maintained relationships that this pack still benefits from."

I kept going. File after file. Five years of work rendered visible. The hall was quiet now, but it was a different kind of quiet. Uncomfortable. Several wolves were looking at Nicolas. He sat very still, his jaw tight on the right side.

I set down the last file. "I have contributed," I said. "The record proves it. The law requires you to acknowledge it."

Eva stood abruptly. Her careful neutrality was gone. "Those records are fabricated," she said sharply. "She could have written anything. There's no proof those agreements were actually hers."

The hall murmured. Nicolas did not tell her to sit down.

A chair scraped. Lena rose from the third row, her hand resting on the hilt of her blade. "I can corroborate every date in those records," she said flatly. "Personally. So can the three other witnesses present."

She named them. Three wolves stood—two Deltas and a Gamma. They did not speak. They did not need to. Their presence was enough.

Nicolas's jaw tightened further. Eva's scent sharpened, citrus turning acidic.

Then Dara stood.

She was shaking. Her hands clutched a folded piece of paper. She unfolded it slowly and began to read, her voice small at first but growing steadier with each word.

"Three days ago, Eva found me in the corridor outside the ceremony hall. I had given Adeline water. Eva said this was disloyalty. She said anyone who showed kindness to the former mate demonstrated a lack of respect for the Alpha's chosen Luna. She reassigned me from kitchen duty to latrine duty. She said it was a lesson."

Dara sat down. She did not look at Eva.

Eva's expression went cold for just a moment—her eyes flat, her mouth tight—before she smoothed it back into something softer. But the hall had seen it. Several wolves who had been in that corridor, who had watched and said nothing, were now staring at the floor.

Nicolas rose. His patience was gone. I could see it in the set of his shoulders, the way his aura flooded the hall all at once, thick and oppressive. He had lost control of the narrative. He was going to end this the only way he knew how.

"Enough," he said.

His voice carried Alpha tone now. Not suggestion. Command. The air pressure in the hall changed. Lower-ranked wolves dropped their eyes instinctively. I felt it hit me like a wave—the biological compulsion to submit, to obey, to stop resisting.

"Kneel," Nicolas said.

The word was a physical blow. My knees buckled. My bones began to bend under the weight of the command, my body obeying against my will. I was going down. I was going to kneel in front of three hundred wolves and prove exactly what he had always believed I was.

And then my spine snapped straight.

Something inside me—something that had been locked down, suppressed, buried under years of wolfsbane and fear—tore free. A sound filled the hall. Not a voice. Not a howl. A vibration that came from somewhere deeper than my throat, a frequency that rattled in the bones of the room and made the air itself feel heavier.

My skin began to burn. Silver fur erupted across my arms, my shoulders, spreading like wildfire. My bones shifted, lengthened, restructured themselves with audible cracks that echoed in the sudden, absolute silence of the hall. I was not in control. I was not choosing this. My wolf was surfacing whether I wanted her to or not, and she was massive.

The shift completed in seconds. I stood in the center of the hall—twice the size of any Alpha female I had ever seen, my fur silver-white and gleaming, my aura radiating outward in waves that drove every unmated male wolf to his knees.

The scent hit the room like a detonation. Cold pine and white flowers. The way the mountain smells before first snow.

Aldric's scroll hit the floor.
