Chapter 2

Leonidas arrived at the border in twenty minutes.

I checked the time on my phone when his vehicle appeared through the trees. Twenty minutes from when the guard made the call. That meant he'd been awake. Waiting, maybe. I didn't know what to do with that information, so I filed it away and watched him step out of the black SUV.

He was taller than I'd expected. Broader. The kind of presence that made the two armed guards look smaller just by proximity. His aura radiated outward like heat from a source—not aggressive, not performative, just there. Undeniable.

He walked toward me with an unhurried stride. No pity in his expression. No condolences forming on his lips. He stopped three feet away and looked at me with eyes that were grey and steady and gave away nothing.

"Rosalie Campbell," he said. My name in his voice sounded different. Deliberate. "Your training facility has been maintained. It's available whenever you choose to use it."

I stared at him. My brain was still processing the phantom pain radiating from the dead mark on my neck, the nausea that came in waves, the silence where Selene used to be. His words didn't make sense in the context of any of that.

"Training facility," I repeated. My voice came out flat.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document. He handed it to me. I took it automatically.

It was a training schedule. Printed. Professional. My name at the top. Below that: physical specifications I recognized from my Challenge Circle days—weight calibrations, shift-time measurements, recovery protocols. Things I hadn't looked at in seven years. Things no one should have had access to.

I looked up at him. "How do you have this?"

"I've kept your records current," he said. No elaboration. No explanation of why. Just a statement of fact delivered in that even, unhurried voice.

I searched his face for the condition. The expectation. The price attached to this gesture. I found nothing. His expression was composed, patient, waiting for me to decide what came next without pressing me toward any particular answer.

It unsettled me more than cruelty would have.

"Follow my vehicle to the main compound," Leonidas said. "Guest quarters are prepared. You can rest or train as you prefer. No one will disturb you unless you request it."

He turned and walked back to the SUV before I could respond.

I got back in my car. My hands were shaking again. I gripped the steering wheel and followed his taillights through the trees.

---

Fenris was waiting when I stepped out of the car at Nightveil's main grounds.

I'd heard of him. Every wolf on the West Coast had heard of Leonidas's bonded companion—the massive grey beast who tolerated almost no one, who'd once driven a visiting Gamma out of the training grounds by presence alone. Fenris didn't submit. Fenris didn't acknowledge. That was his reputation.

He walked toward me before I'd taken three steps from the vehicle.

I froze. He was enormous. Easily twice the size of any normal pack wolf. His grey fur caught the early morning light. His eyes were amber and fixed on me with an intensity that made my breath catch.

He stopped directly in front of me. Then he dropped his head to the ground at my feet and went completely still.

Voluntary submission.

I knew what I was looking at. Every ranked wolf knew what that gesture meant. It was the posture wolves gave only to those who outranked them categorically, biologically, in ways that had nothing to do with titles or territory.

I didn't understand why he was giving it to me.

Around us, Nightveil pack members had stopped what they were doing. I could feel their eyes. The weight of their attention. They understood what they were witnessing even if I didn't.

Leonidas stood ten feet away. I looked at him. His expression was carefully composed, but something shifted behind his eyes—something he didn't permit to reach his face. He said nothing.

Fenris remained motionless at my feet.

I didn't know what to do. My wolf was silent. The mark on my neck ached. I was standing in a strange pack's territory with a legend's bonded companion prostrate before me, and I had no framework for any of it.

"He recognizes you," Leonidas said quietly. Not an explanation. Just an observation.

I looked down at Fenris. His massive head was still pressed to the ground. Waiting.

I reached out slowly and touched the top of his head. His fur was coarse and warm. He didn't move.

After a moment, he rose and walked back to Leonidas's side. The watching pack members returned to their tasks. The moment dissolved as quickly as it had formed.

But I felt it settle into my bones anyway. A question I didn't have language for yet.

---

The first week at Nightveil was biological crisis dressed up as routine.

The guest quarters were quiet. Too quiet. I'd spent seven years falling asleep to Silvercrest's ambient sounds—distant patrols, the low hum of pack-link conversations I wasn't part of but could sense at the edges, the rhythm of a territory that never fully slept. Nightveil's silence was different. Respectful. Deliberate. It left too much space for the pain to fill.

The dead mark on my neck ached constantly. Not the sharp agony of the severing—that had faded after the first two days—but a persistent, hollow ache, like something vital had been removed and the wound couldn't close. I pressed my fingertips against it compulsively. Checking. Confirming it was real. That this had actually happened.

Selene remained silent.

Three days. Then five. Then seven.

I tried everything. I sat in meditation positions I'd learned as a teenager. I ran the perimeter of Nightveil's territory until my human lungs burned. I stood in the training facility's main room and called her name internally until my head pounded.

Nothing.

On the eighth morning, I sat alone on the training facility floor and forced myself to calculate the probability that the dormancy was permanent. That seven years of suppression had done structural damage. That Archer's rejection had severed not just the mate bond but my wolf's ability to return.

The math was ugly. The precedents were worse.

I didn't tell anyone.

I started training in human form the next day anyway. If my wolf was gone, I'd build something else. I didn't know what yet. But I'd build it with my own hands, and no one would take it from me again.
