Chapter 3

Leonidas didn't train like an Alpha.

I noticed it on the third morning. He arrived at the facility twenty minutes after I did—not because he was late, but because he'd checked first whether I wanted company. He'd sent a single mind-link request, formal and brief: *May I join you?* I'd said yes because refusing felt more complicated than agreeing.

He worked beside me. Not above me. Not supervising. When I ran drills, he ran them at my pace. When I needed a demonstration, he asked permission before stepping into my space. He never used his Alpha tone. Not once. Not even when I botched a defensive sequence so badly I nearly took us both down.

"Again," he said. Just that. No command weight behind it. No expectation that I'd comply because he'd spoken.

I reset my stance and ran it again.

After the session ended, I sat on the floor with my back against the wall, catching my breath. My muscles ached in the good way—the earned way. Leonidas handed me a water bottle without comment and sat three feet away, giving me space I hadn't asked for but apparently needed.

I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. The moment he'd frame a correction as an order. The moment he'd tell me what I should be doing differently, how I should be training, what he expected in return for all this.

It didn't come.

That evening, I found Marcus Vane in Nightveil's main hall. Leonidas's Beta was reviewing patrol schedules, his attention focused on a tablet screen. He looked up when I approached, his expression professionally pleasant.

"How long has the training facility been maintained?" I asked.

Marcus didn't hesitate. "Seven years."

I waited for elaboration. He offered none. Just watched me with sharp eyes that gave away nothing.

"Why?" The question came out quieter than I'd intended.

Marcus tilted his head slightly. "You'd have to ask the Prince that."

I didn't ask a follow-up. I just stood there holding that number—seven years—like a weight I didn't know what to do with. Seven years. The entire length of my bond with Archer. Leonidas had been maintaining a training facility for a wolf he'd never met, keeping records current for someone who might never return.

I left before Marcus could read whatever expression was forming on my face.

Back in Silvercrest, something was breaking.

I didn't know this yet. I wouldn't learn the details until much later. But it was happening anyway, invisible and relentless, like rot spreading through structural wood.

Archer smelled winter roses in his shower on the fourth morning after I left.

He turned, expecting to find the source. A new soap. A cleaning product someone had used. There was nothing. Just steam and tile and the scent that shouldn't be there—delicate and sharp at once, familiar in a way that made his chest tighten.

It happened again that afternoon in his office. Again that night in bed beside Solana. The scent appeared without warning, without source, phantom and persistent.

He asked Solana about her perfume. She told him she wasn't wearing any. He asked again two days later, his tone sharper. She snapped at him, her patience fraying.

He stopped mentioning it after that. The scent didn't stop.

Later, much later, I would learn what that meant. The biological consequence of severing a true fated bond. The scent-memory that haunts the wolf who breaks it, appearing at random like a ghost the body refuses to forget.

But I didn't know that yet. I was too busy trying to survive each day without my wolf's voice.

---

Two weeks into Nightveil, Selene came back.

Not gently. Not the way I'd imagined during the long silent nights when I'd called her name into the void. She came back like something tearing through a wall, violent and accusatory and furious.

It happened during a closed session in the training facility. Just me and Leonidas. We were working on defensive counters—complex sequences that required close proximity, precise timing. He stepped into my guard to demonstrate an adjustment, and his scent hit me full-force.

It wasn't jasmine. It wasn't the artificial sweetness Archer had always carried. It was something deeper. Ancient. Resonant. It smelled like winter forests and stone and something I had no name for but recognized anyway, bone-deep and immediate.

Inside me, something moved.

Selene's voice detonated through my skull: *"You knew. You always knew what I was."*

Not comfort. Not relief. Accusation, delivered in a register that felt older than both of us, carrying seven years of compressed fury in four words.

My bones started cracking.

The sound was audible. Sharp pops running up my spine, my ribs expanding, my jaw reshaping. I went down hard, my knees hitting the mat. The shift seized me—incomplete, agonizing, my body trying to transform after seven years of atrophy and failing halfway through.

I was caught between forms. Human bones breaking into wolf structure that wouldn't hold. Muscles seizing. My vision went white.

I felt Leonidas move—not away, toward. His hands on my shoulders, steadying but not restraining. His voice low and even: "Breathe. Don't fight it. Let it pass."

I couldn't breathe. My lungs were the wrong shape. My ribs were cracking and reforming and cracking again, stuck in a loop my body couldn't complete.

Selene screamed inside me. Not in pain. In rage. Seven years of suppression pouring out all at once, and my frame couldn't contain it.

Leonidas didn't let go. He held me through it—not controlling, not commanding, just present. His scent surrounded me, and somehow that made it worse and better at the same time. Worse because it was what had triggered this. Better because it was the only thing anchoring me to anything real.

The shift reversed. Slowly. Agonizingly. My bones cracked back into human form. My muscles released. I collapsed forward, gasping, my forehead pressed against the mat.

Leonidas's hands were still on my shoulders. Steady. Waiting.

"She's back," I whispered. My voice was raw.

"I know," he said quietly.

I looked up at him. His grey eyes were steady, but something moved behind them—something he didn't let reach his expression.

"How long have you known?" I asked.

He didn't answer immediately. Then: "Since the day you arrived."

I stared at him. Fenris's submission. The maintained facility. Seven years.

"What am I?" The question came out broken.

Leonidas's expression shifted—just slightly, just enough. "You're exactly what you've always been," he said. "You just forgot for a while."

He stood and offered me his hand. I took it. He pulled me to my feet and stepped back, giving me space again.

Inside me, Selene's voice was still there. Furious. Awake. Waiting.

I pressed my fingertips against the dead mark on my neck. It ached. But underneath that ache, something else was stirring. Something I'd buried so deep I'd almost convinced myself it had never existed.

I looked at Leonidas. "I need to train harder."

He nodded once. "Tomorrow. Rest tonight."

I didn't argue. I left the facility and walked back to the guest quarters under a sky that was just beginning to darken.

Behind me, I felt his eyes. Watching. Waiting. Patient in a way I still didn't understand.

Inside me, Selene whispered: *"He knows what we are. He's always known."*

I didn't answer her. I just kept walking.
