After My Alpha Called My Stepsister His True Mate Chapter 1

The great hall smelled like blood and candle wax.

Killian stood at the head of the room with his shirt still torn at the shoulder, a bandage wrapped around his forearm from the ambush. The wound was already healing — Alpha metabolism, nothing serious. But he wore it like a prop. Like a man who understood the value of looking like he had survived something.

I stood in the third row. Luna of Ironveil Pack. His mate.

I could feel the bond right then, warm and insistent in the center of my chest, the way it always was when he was close. Seven years of that warmth. Seven years of believing it meant something.

"The attack on the coastal highway was not random," Killian said. His voice carried the full weight of his Alpha tone — that low, resonant command that pressed against the back of every wolf's skull in the room. "The rogues targeted me specifically. And in the chaos of the ambush, something happened that I cannot explain and cannot undo."

He paused. The hall was absolutely silent.

"My mate bond was severed."

A sound moved through the crowd. Not quite a gasp. More like a collective held breath.

"I know what you're thinking," he continued. "I thought the same thing. But the Moon Goddess does not make mistakes. What I felt in that moment — what I feel now — is something I have to honor, no matter the cost to myself."

He turned then. Slightly. Just enough.

Arielle stepped forward from the side of the dais.

My stepsister. In a pale blue dress I had never seen before, her dark hair loose around her shoulders, her expression arranged into something that was supposed to look like reluctant sorrow. She had practiced it. I could tell by the way her eyes moved — just a fraction too controlled, checking the room's reaction before settling back into the performance.

She had known this was coming. She had dressed for it.

"Arielle Williams," Killian said, "is my true fated mate."

The bond in my chest did not flicker. Did not dim. Did not do a single thing that a severed bond was supposed to do.

It burned. Steady and hot and absolutely, undeniably present.

He was lying.

I knew it the way I knew my own heartbeat. The way I knew the exact wording of Article Nine of our Luna Accord, the betrayal clause, the one that could strip either party of rank and territorial rights if the other could prove violation of fidelity and honor. I had read that document so many times I could recite it in my sleep.

Killian was looking at me now. The whole hall was looking at me.

I held his gaze for exactly three seconds. Long enough to let him see that I was not shattered. Long enough to let him wonder what I was instead.

Then I lowered my eyes.

The room exhaled. I heard someone near the back murmur something soft and pitying. I felt the shift in the air — the pack reading my downcast eyes as grief, as submission, as a Luna accepting the unacceptable with dignity.

Let them read it that way.

"I understand," I said quietly. "I'll need a little time."

Killian's shoulders dropped half an inch. Relief. He had expected a scene. He had prepared for one — I could see it in the way he'd positioned himself, feet slightly apart, chin up, ready to use his Alpha tone on me if he had to.

He didn't know me at all.

I walked out of the great hall at a measured pace. Not fleeing. Not crumbling. Just a woman who had somewhere to be.

---

I locked my bedroom door at eleven-fifteen that night.

The room still smelled like him. I noted that the way I noted everything now — as information, not feeling. I sat down at my desk, opened my laptop, and pulled up the secondary communications interface I had built six months ago when I first noticed the discrepancies in the pack's eastern border reports.

Killian had always underestimated my memory. He thought I read documents the way most people did — once, for the general shape of things. He did not know that I retained every word, every clause, every frequency signature in the encrypted channels he used for his private communications.

He had been sloppy. Not dramatically sloppy — he was too careful for that. But sloppy in the way that people are when they believe they are untouchable.

I cracked his private channel at twelve forty-seven in the morning.

The first file I found was a supply manifest. Rogue traders, eastern corridor, three separate transactions over the past four months. Illegal under inter-pack law. Punishable by Alpha title forfeiture under the Territorial Commerce Accord of 2019.

I copied it without blinking.

By two in the morning I had eleven files. By four I had twenty-three.

---

The next three days were a performance I gave with my whole body.

I sat at pack meals and ate everything on my plate. I deferred to Arielle's presence at Killian's side with a small, gracious nod whenever our eyes met across the table. I accepted the pitying glances from pack members with a quiet, composed smile — the smile of a woman processing loss with admirable dignity.

Arielle watched me the way a person watches a building they expect to collapse. Waiting for the crack.

I gave her nothing.

At night, behind my locked door, I worked.

I mapped every rogue trader contact in Killian's files. I cross-referenced the territorial deals against the pack boundary records I had memorized during my first year as Luna. I pulled up our Luna Accord and read the betrayal clause again — not because I needed to, but because I wanted to feel the shape of it. The weight of it.

Killian had built this clause as a weapon aimed at me. A way to brand me unfit, strip my rank, take everything.

I was going to turn it around in his hands.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist — a habit I had never named, just something I did when I needed to stay steady — and I kept working.

The bond still burned in my chest. Steady. Undeniable.

I let it burn. I had use for it yet.
