After My Beta Betrayed Me, I Found Strength Chapter 1

I smoothed down the silver ceremonial dress one last time, my fingers trembling slightly against the simple fabric. It wasn't the elaborate gown that Sophia would likely wear, but it was the best I had—a hand-me-down from my mother's youth, carefully preserved for special occasions. Today was certainly special. Today, Alexander would finally announce our courtship to the allied packs.

"You look beautiful, Luna," Rose whispered from her bed, her voice thin but her smile radiant. At thirteen, my sister's wolf-sickness had left her too weak to attend the ceremony, another cruel reminder of our family's fallen status.

"I wish you could come with me," I said, sitting beside her on the bed. I pulled out the small leather pouch of protective charms I'd gathered—tiny moonstone beads, dried wolfsbane flowers, and silver thread.

"Then I'll be there in spirit." Rose turned, presenting her back to me. "Braid them in?"

I worked the charms into her hair with practiced fingers, weaving protection and love into each strand. "Alexander says his father is considering a healing exchange program with the northern packs. If it happens..."

"I know." Rose squeezed my hand. "You've done so much for me already, Luna."

My throat tightened. As a wolfless Omega in the struggling Silver Creek Pack, I had little to offer my sister except love and these small rituals. But Alexander—Beta of the powerful Black Moon Pack—could change everything. His interest in me over the past months had been unexpected, thrilling. The midnight runs, the border patrols he'd volunteered for, the whispered promises of a future together.

"I should go," I said, kissing Rose's forehead. "The ceremony starts at moonrise."

"Luna?" Rose caught my hand, her eyes suddenly serious. "Be careful. Something feels... wrong."

I forced a smile. "It's just nerves. Everything's going to change after tonight."

I had no idea how prophetic those words would be.

* * *

The Black Moon Pack's ceremonial grounds were awash with torchlight when I arrived, wolves from five allied packs mingling beneath the rising full moon. My heart hammered against my ribs as I scanned the crowd for Alexander's tall figure.

"Luna Evans." A voice behind me made me turn. It was Ethan Hunter, one of our pack's Delta warriors. His silver-flecked eyes met mine briefly before dropping in the customary deference to a higher-ranked wolf—though as an Omega, I was hardly that.

"Ethan," I nodded, surprised. He rarely spoke to me, though I'd sometimes catch him watching me from a distance. "I didn't expect to see you here."

"I'm part of the Silver Creek security detail tonight," he said simply. Something in his steady gaze made me uncomfortable—not threatening, but as if he could see straight through me.

A hush fell over the gathering. Alpha Marcus Stone, Alexander's father, had taken his place on the ceremonial rock. Beside him stood Alexander, resplendent in formal black attire that highlighted his powerful build. My breath caught at the sight of him.

But my smile froze when I saw who stood at his other side.

Sophia. My cousin. In an elaborate silver gown that made my simple dress look like rags.

"Brothers and sisters of the allied packs," Alpha Marcus's voice boomed across the clearing. "Tonight we strengthen our bonds through the sacred rite of mate-marking."

Mate-marking? No, that couldn't be right. Alexander had said nothing about—

"My son, Beta Alexander Stone, has found his mate and will complete the bond tonight under the blessed full moon."

The world tilted beneath my feet. This was wrong. Some mistake. Alexander's eyes swept the crowd, passing over me without a flicker of recognition before settling on Sophia with possessive pride.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. Could only watch in horror as Alexander bent his head to Sophia's exposed neck. His teeth sank into her flesh, marking her as his, and her gasp of pleasure carried clearly in the night air.

"Mate," Alexander's voice resonated through the pack mind-link, not meant for me but impossible to block out.

All around me, wolves bowed their heads in respect to the newly bonded pair. No one noticed the Omega girl from Silver Creek silently shattering into pieces.

I ran. Away from the torches, the congratulatory howls, the betrayal that burned like acid through my veins. My vision blurred with tears as I plunged deeper into the forest, branches tearing at my silver dress, my carefully arranged hair coming undone.

I don't know how long I ran before my legs gave out. I found myself beside the sacred moon pool, its surface reflecting the blood-red moon above. A lunar eclipse—a bad omen on a mating night. How fitting.

"Luna."

I didn't need to turn to know who had followed me. Ethan's scent—pine and something wild—wrapped around me like a physical touch.

"Leave me alone," I whispered, my voice breaking.

Instead, he knelt beside me. "I can't."

Something in his voice made me look up. The raw emotion in his eyes stole what little breath I had left.

"You knew," I accused.

"I suspected," he admitted. "Alexander's scent has been mingled with Sophia's for weeks."

A fresh wave of humiliation crashed over me. Everyone had known but me.

"Luna," Ethan said again, and this time something strange happened. A warmth brushed against my mind—a tentative touch unlike anything I'd ever felt.

"What are you—"

"Feel me," he whispered. "Please."

The mental touch came again, stronger this time. And suddenly, impossibly, I felt it—a connection opening between us like a door I'd never known existed.

*Luna. My Luna.*

His voice in my mind. Impossible. I was wolfless. I couldn't form pack bonds or mind-links.

*You've always been mine,* his voice continued in my head, filled with a devotion that staggered me. *I've waited so long.*

"I don't understand," I whispered aloud, but deep inside, something was stirring—something that recognized the truth in his words.

"You're my mate," Ethan said simply. "My true mate. I've known since the first moment I saw you."

The blood-red moon reflected in his eyes as he held out his hand to me. "I would never force this bond. But I'm offering you a choice, Luna Evans. A real mate. A true bond."

My world had ended tonight. Everything I'd believed in had proven false. But here, in the midst of my devastation, was an unexpected lifeline.

Desperation, grief, and something else—something that felt strangely like coming home—surged through me as I placed my trembling hand in his.

Warmth flooded my broken heart.
