Chapter 4

The Moonstone Café sat on neutral ground between pack territories—a human establishment that served coffee to werewolves who pretended to be ordinary. I arrived ten minutes early and sat in my car, watching the entrance.

My hands were steady on the steering wheel. The sealed evidence packet sat in the passenger seat, thick with documentation. Ten years of my life reduced to paper and Luna marks.

I checked my reflection in the rearview mirror. Same tired face. Same dark circles. But something else now—a sharpness in my eyes that hadn't been there before. The wolfsbane was clearing from my system. Whatever was waking up inside me pressed against my ribs with every breath.

I grabbed the packet and walked inside.

He was already there.

Lycan Prince Rhett Ashford sat at a corner table, his back to the wall, positioned to see every entrance. He wore dark jeans and a simple shirt, but there was no hiding what he was. His posture was military-perfect. His presence filled the room like a physical weight, pressing against the air itself.

He stood when I entered. The movement was fluid and controlled.

I crossed to his table and sat down without waiting for an invitation. Set the evidence packet between us like a contract.

"Prince Ashford."

"Luna Kallie." His voice was measured. Formal. But his eyes—they flashed gold for just a second, and his entire body went rigid.

I felt it too. The pull. The recognition that slammed into my chest and made my wolf—the one that shouldn't exist—surge against its cage so hard I almost gasped.

His hands gripped the table's edge. His knuckles went white.

I raised my hand. "I didn't come here for that."

He stared at me. The gold in his eyes flickered and fought to stay contained.

"I need an ally within Council law," I said steadily. "Not a rescuer."

The silence stretched between us. I watched him wrestle with something primal and violent. His wolf wanted to reach across the table. Wanted to touch. Wanted to claim.

He didn't move.

Instead, he deliberately lowered himself back into his chair. Not submission—a choice. Meeting me as an equal.

"Tell me what you have," he said.

I opened the packet. Slid the first page across the table. "Wolfsbane. My mate has been poisoning me for ten years to suppress my wolf. This is his dosing schedule, in his own handwriting."

Rhett's jaw tightened. He picked up the document. Read it. His scent shifted—pine and winter frost, but underneath it, fury.

I slid the next page. "Treasury diversions. He's been siphoning pack funds to support his mistress. Tens of thousands of dollars over six months."

Another page. "Forged Luna seals. He plans to sign over eastern pack territory using my authority without my knowledge or consent."

Rhett reviewed each document methodically. His expression stayed controlled, but I saw the muscle jump in his jaw. Saw his fingers press too hard against the paper.

"This is pack treason," he said quietly.

"I know."

"If he forges your Luna seal on official territory documents, the Council has grounds for immediate intervention."

"I know that too." I leaned forward slightly. "That's why I'm here. I need you to be ready when it happens. I need Council authority standing behind me when I strike."

He looked up. Met my eyes. "You're not asking me to stop him."

"No. I'm asking you to witness his crime and enforce the law when he commits it."

Something shifted in his expression. Respect, maybe. Or recognition of a different kind.

"You've been planning this."

"For weeks." I gathered the documents back into the packet. "I have more evidence. I'm still gathering it. When I have everything I need, I'll trigger the situation that forces him to commit documented treason in front of witnesses."

"And then?"

"Then I need a Lycan Prince and Council authority to make sure he faces the consequences."

Rhett leaned back in his chair. Studied me with those gold-flecked eyes. "You're still marked by him."

"For now."

"The bond—"

"Will be severed," I said flatly. "On my terms. In front of witnesses. When I'm ready."

The mate bond between us hummed like a live wire. Neither of us touched it.

"I can smell the wolfsbane on you," Rhett said quietly. "It's thick. Toxic. How long since you stopped taking it?"

"A week."

His eyes flashed gold again. "Your wolf—"

"Is waking up." I met his gaze. "And she's not what he told me she was."

Rhett's hands flexed against the table. I saw him physically restrain himself from reaching across the space between us.

"I'll review your evidence," he said finally. "I'll coordinate with the Council. When you're ready to move, contact me."

I stood. He stood with me.

For a moment we just looked at each other. The pull was magnetic. Undeniable. My wolf slammed against my ribs, demanding I step closer.

I didn't.

"Thank you, Prince Ashford."

"Rhett," he said. "When we're alone, it's Rhett."

I nodded once and walked out.

I made it to my car before my hands started shaking. Not from fear. From the sheer effort of walking away from my true mate while my false one's mark still burned on my neck.

I pressed two fingers against the fading mark and drove home.

Two days later, a sealed letter arrived via neutral courier.

I opened it in the Luna's study with the door locked.

*Luna Kallie,*

*I have reviewed your evidence and cross-referenced it with my border investigation. The financial diversions you documented match resource movements toward rogue-held borderlands. This constitutes a pattern of pack endangerment.*

*Under Lycan Council law, documented pack treason requires either witnessed commission or sealed evidence of intent. If your mate forges your Luna seal on official territory-transfer documents, that act alone meets the threshold for formal tribunal.*

*I will position Council resources to respond immediately when you provide notification.*

*You are not alone in this.*

*—R.A.*

I read the letter three times. Then I folded it precisely and locked it in the evidence chest.

I allowed myself exactly one moment of something that wasn't quite relief. Then I opened the pack ledger and continued working.

The training assembly happened on Thursday.

The entire pack gathered on the main grounds—warriors, their families, even the Omegas who maintained the facilities. Travis stood at the center, flanked by his Gamma. I stood to the side with the other high-ranking wolves.

Richard, the former Alpha, positioned himself prominently in the front row. Margaret stood beside him, her expression sharp.

Travis was midway through discussing the new rotation schedule when Richard's voice cut across the field.

"Alpha Travis." Richard's tone was loud. Deliberate. "A question, if I may."

Travis paused. "Of course, Father."

"The younger wolves look to our leadership for inspiration." Richard gestured broadly at the assembled pack. "They need to see strength. Capability. The full expression of what it means to be wolf."

I felt the shift in the air. Felt every eye turn toward me.

"Our Luna has served for ten years," Richard continued. "Yet she has never demonstrated a single shift to inspire these young wolves. How can they respect a leadership that cannot embody the most basic aspect of our nature?"

The silence was crushing.

Several warriors looked away. A few younger wolves whispered. Margaret's expression was satisfied.

Dani, standing near the back, hid a smile behind her hand.

Travis said nothing. Just stood there. Silent.

I stepped forward.

"Former Alpha Richard." My voice carried across the field. Calm. Steady. "Thank you for your concern for the pack's standards."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"You're right that our wolves deserve strong leadership," I continued. "Leadership demonstrates itself in many forms. I may not shift, but I manage every logistical aspect of this pack. I coordinate training schedules, maintain supply chains, mediate disputes, and ensure every wolf here has what they need to thrive."

I turned to address the assembled pack. "I will personally review and improve our training schedule. You'll see the results in your resources, your organization, and your success."

I met Richard's gaze. "A Luna's value isn't only in her wolf. It's in what she does for her pack."

I held his stare until he looked away.

Then I walked off the field with my head high.

I made it to the Luna's study. Closed the door. Locked it.

I placed my palm flat on the desk and breathed. In. Out. In. Out.

My hands shook.

The presence in my chest roared. Slammed against my ribs so hard I doubled over.

Not yet, I told her. Not yet.

When my hands finally stopped shaking, I opened the ledger.

And I kept working.
