Chapter 5

I found the first discrepancy in the weapons inventory on Monday night.

The ledger showed twelve silver-tipped training blades logged into storage. The actual count was nine. Three missing. No authorization. No explanation.

I cross-referenced the supply chain records. The blades had been requisitioned by "household maintenance"—a category that didn't require Alpha approval, only Luna oversight.

My oversight.

Except I'd never signed off on it.

I flipped back through the pages. Found more gaps. Medical supplies. Dried meat reserves. A entire crate of wolfsbane antidote—ironic, that—gone without a trace.

Someone with household access was bleeding our resources. Someone who thought a wolfless Luna wouldn't notice.

I documented everything. Dates. Quantities. The pattern was clear: supplies moved out in small batches, never enough to trigger automatic Alpha notification, always under categories that fell within Luna authority.

Dani's fingerprints were all over it.

I sealed the documentation with my Luna mark and added it to the evidence chest. Then I went back to the ledger and kept tracking.

Let her keep going. Let her think she was clever.

The more she took, the deeper she dug her own grave.

On Wednesday evening, Travis brought Dani jewelry.

I was in the dining room, setting the table for Leo and Mia's dinner. The kids were upstairs with Sylvia, the pack Healer, finishing their homework.

Travis walked in with Dani on his arm. He carried a black velvet box.

Two junior pack members—Delta wolves assigned to evening patrol—were passing through the hall. They saw. They stopped. They went very, very quiet.

Travis opened the box. Gold gleamed inside. A necklace. Earrings. A bracelet thick enough to be a statement.

"For you," he said to Dani. His voice was warm. Intimate.

Dani gasped. Touched each piece with her fingertips like she was counting treasure. "Travis, this is... no one has ever..."

"You deserve to be appreciated," Travis said.

I folded a napkin. Smoothed it flat. Placed it beside Mia's plate.

Dani lifted the necklace from the box. The gold caught the light. "I've never been truly appreciated before," she said loudly. Her eyes flicked toward me. "Not like this."

I looked up and smiled. "Those are beautiful, Dani. Gold suits you."

Her expression faltered. Just for a second. Like she'd expected tears or rage and got pleasantness instead.

Travis clasped the necklace around her throat. His fingers lingered on her skin.

I turned back to the table. Set Leo's fork down carefully. Under the table, my knee pressed hard against the chair leg. The wood creaked.

"Luna," one of the Delta wolves said quietly. "Do you need—"

"I'm fine," I said. "Thank you. You're dismissed."

They left. Fast.

Travis and Dani stayed. She admired herself in the reflection of the window glass. He watched her with satisfaction.

I called upstairs. "Leo, Mia, dinner's ready."

Small footsteps thundered down the stairs. My babies ran into the room, and I caught them both, kissed their foreheads, settled them into their chairs.

"Mama, can we have dessert?" Mia asked.

"If you finish your vegetables," I said.

Leo poked at his plate. His gaze drifted to Dani's necklace. Then to his father. Then down.

I served their food. Poured their water. Ignored the man at the other end of the room who used to be my mate.

That night, I woke in the dark.

The clock read 2:47 AM. Travis's side of the bed was empty. Again.

I lay there, staring at the ceiling. My chest ached. Not the mate bond—that had gone cold weeks ago. This was something else. The pressure. The heat. The presence that had been building since I stopped taking the poison.

And then she spoke.

The voice came from inside me. Low. Ancient. Unmistakably mine.

*"They cannot keep us down much longer."*

I sat up so fast the room spun. My hand flew to my sternum, pressing against the place where the heat lived.

Silence.

Then, again: *"I am here. I have always been here."*

My wolf.

My wolf was speaking to me.

Tears burned behind my eyes. I pressed harder against my chest, felt the warmth pulse under my palm like a second heartbeat.

"I know," I whispered into the darkness. "I know you're there."

*"He tried to bury us. He failed."*

The heat surged. My bones ached. My skin felt too tight.

"Not yet," I breathed. "We're not ready yet."

*"Soon."*

"Soon," I agreed.

For the first time in ten years, I did not feel alone inside my own body.

I sat in the dark, hand pressed to my chest, and let myself cry. Not from pain. From relief.

She was real. She was mine. And she was waking up.

On Friday afternoon, I was in the Luna's study reviewing supply requests when I heard voices.

Two corridors away. Behind closed doors.

I shouldn't be able to hear them. But I did.

Richard's voice, loud and authoritative. "The pack's dignity demands faster action. Waiting for the full moon gathering is too cautious."

Margaret, sharp and cold. "A wolfless Luna is an embarrassment we've tolerated long enough. If we move now—"

"She still holds the Luna seal," Travis said. "I can't just—"

"Declare her mentally unfit," Richard interrupted. "Wolfless instability. Inability to fulfill Luna duties. The Council allows for emergency removal in cases of mental incapacity."

"If her seal is invalidated pre-emptively," Margaret added, "your forged documents become significantly less risky. You can transfer the territory under emergency Alpha authority."

Silence.

Then Travis: "How quickly can we move?"

"Within the week," Richard said. "I'll draft the formal complaint myself. We'll need three pack witnesses to testify to her instability."

"Dani can testify," Margaret said. "And we'll find two others. Wolves who are loyal to the family."

"Do it," Travis said.

I stood frozen in the study. Two corridors away. Behind walls and closed doors.

I heard every word.

My hands didn't shake. The heat in my chest burned steady and bright.

I walked to my desk. Pulled out formal pack stationery. And I began to write.

*To the Lycan Council,*

*I, Luna Kallie of Ironvale Pack, do hereby submit formal testimony regarding criminal activity within pack leadership...*

I wrote for an hour. Documented everything. The poisoning. The theft. The conspiracy. The planned invalidation of my seal.

I signed it. Dated it. Sealed it with my Luna mark.

Then I locked it in the evidence chest and sent a single-line message to Rhett Ashford:

*They're moving faster than expected. I need you ready within the week.*

His reply came within an hour:

*I'm already in position. Say the word.*

I closed my eyes. Breathed.

The voice in my chest whispered: *"Soon."*

"Soon," I agreed.

On Saturday morning, Margaret called a "family meeting."

I was summoned to the formal sitting room. Travis sat in the center. Richard and Margaret flanked him like judges. Dani stood near the window, her new gold jewelry gleaming.

I walked in and stood before them.

"Kallie," Margaret began. "We need to discuss your position as Luna."

I waited.

"Your inability to shift has become a liability the pack can no longer afford," Richard said. "We've been patient. Generous. But ten years without a wolf is not a late blooming—it's a fundamental deficiency."

Travis said nothing. Just watched me.

"We're concerned about your mental state," Margaret continued. "The stress of trying to fulfill Luna duties without a wolf has clearly taken a toll. You've been... unstable. Forgetful. We've all noticed."

Lies. Every word.

"We think it's best," Richard said, "if you step down voluntarily. For your own wellbeing."

Dani's hand drifted to her bare neck. Her eyes gleamed.

I looked at Travis. "Is this what you want?"

He met my gaze. "I think it's what's best for everyone."

The mate bond—what was left of it—went ice cold.

I nodded slowly. "I see."

"We'll make the announcement at tomorrow's pack gathering," Margaret said. "You'll be relieved of your duties with full honors. No one needs to know the details."

"And my Luna seal?" I asked quietly.

Richard waved a hand. "Will be transferred to a more suitable candidate."

Dani couldn't hide her smile.

I looked at each of them. Richard. Margaret. Dani. Travis.

Then I said, "I understand. Thank you for your honesty."

I turned and walked out.

Made it to the study. Locked the door.

Pulled out my phone and typed:

*Tomorrow. Pack gathering. They're going to try to strip my seal publicly. Be ready.*

Rhett's response was immediate:

*Council tribunal is already en route. We'll be there.*

I set the phone down.

The voice in my chest growled: *"Let them try."*

I pressed my hand to my sternum and felt her surge. Felt my bones ache. Felt something massive and ancient claw its way closer to the surface.

Tomorrow, they would try to take everything from me.

Tomorrow, I would take everything from them.

I opened the evidence chest. Pulled out every sealed document. Every page of testimony. Every piece of proof.

And I began packing them into a formal presentation folder—the kind used for Council tribunals.

My hands were steady.

The heat in my chest burned like a star.

Outside my window, the moon rose full and silver.

And somewhere in the pack house, Travis laughed with his mistress, believing he'd already won.

I smiled in the darkness.

He had no idea what was coming.
