After His Mistress Stabbed Me, My Husband Chose Her Chapter 1

I picked the navy dress. Simple. Elegant. The kind that doesn't draw attention but doesn't apologize for existing either. I smoothed the fabric over my hips and checked my reflection one last time before heading downstairs.

Grandpa Kelley was waiting in the foyer, dressed in his best suit, the one with the pocket square I'd ironed for him yesterday. His eyes lit up when he saw me.

"There's my girl," he said, reaching for my hand. His grip was warm and steady. "You look beautiful."

"You're not so bad yourself," I said, adjusting his tie. It was already perfect, but I needed something to do with my hands. The International Gourmet Invitational was a big deal. Chase's company was the main sponsor. I'd been looking forward to it for weeks.

I tucked a folded note into Grandpa's jacket pocket while he wasn't looking. Just a small thing. A habit I couldn't break. *Today's going to be a good day.*

The town car I'd arranged pulled up right on time. I helped Grandpa into the back seat and slid in beside him. He patted my knee.

"Chase is going to be so happy to see you there," he said.

I smiled. I didn't tell him Chase didn't know we were coming. I wanted it to be a surprise.

The venue was in Midtown. A historic hotel with marble columns and chandeliers that probably cost more than most people's houses. The kind of place where every surface gleamed and every guest looked like they'd stepped out of a magazine.

I helped Grandpa out of the car and offered him my arm. He took it with a grin.

"Let's go see what all the fuss is about," he said.

We walked toward the entrance. A crowd had gathered near the doors. Women in gowns that probably had their own insurance policies. Men in tuxedos checking their phones. Everyone looked important. Everyone looked like they belonged.

I was halfway to the door when a woman stepped directly into our path.

She was tall. Blonde. Wearing a dress that looked like it had been sewn onto her body by a team of specialists. Her makeup was flawless. Her smile was sharp.

She looked at me the way you'd look at a stain on expensive upholstery.

"Excuse me," she said. Her voice was loud. Louder than it needed to be. People turned to look. "This event is by invitation only."

I blinked. "I—"

"I'm Mrs. Kelley," she continued, cutting me off. She said it slowly. Deliberately. Like she was teaching me a new word. "The CEO's wife. And I'll need you to take the elderly gentleman home before he becomes a liability."

The words hit me like cold water.

*Mrs. Kelley.*

I stared at her. My mouth opened but nothing came out. Grandpa's hand tightened on my arm.

She smiled wider. Like she could taste my confusion and it was delicious.

That's when I saw it.

Her right hand. Fourth finger. A ring so large it caught every light in the room and threw it back like a weapon.

The New York Meteorite Diamond.

I knew that ring. I'd stood in front of a jeweler's window two years ago and stared at it until my reflection blurred. Chase had been beside me. I'd pointed at it. Not because I wanted it. Just because it was beautiful.

He'd pulled me away gently. Kissed my temple. Said, *"Real love doesn't need diamonds, Eli. We're better than that."*

I'd believed him.

Now it was on her hand.

The floor felt unstable. The chandeliers too bright. I couldn't breathe right.

Seven years. Seven years of cheap silver bands and handwritten notes and Thanksgiving dinners I ate alone because he had "work emergencies." Seven years of believing him when he said material things didn't matter.

And here was the proof. Glittering. Mocking. Impossible to deny.

I looked up at her face. She was still smiling.

Something in me snapped into place. Not anger. Not yet. Just clarity.

I straightened my shoulders. My voice came out quieter than I expected. But it carried.

"I'm Elianna Kelley," I said. "Chase Kelley's wife. Would you like to explain to me how that ring ended up on your finger?"

The crowd around us went silent.

Karina's smile didn't falter. If anything, it grew. She tilted her head like she was considering a fascinating question.

"Oh," she said softly. "You're *that* Elianna."

She stepped closer. Close enough that I could smell her perfume. Something expensive and sharp.

"Chase told me all about you," she said. Her voice was sweet. Poisonous. "The girl who doesn't understand that some women are meant to be wives. And some are meant to be... kept."

She held up her hand. Let the diamond catch the light.

"He gave me this three months ago," she said. "Right after he told me he was filing for divorce."

Grandpa Kelley made a sound beside me. A small, broken noise.

I didn't look at him. I couldn't.

I kept my eyes on Karina. On the ring. On the wreckage of everything I'd believed.

"You're lying," I said.

She laughed. It was a light, musical sound.

"Am I?"
