Chapter 3

Etta had run that nursery the way a priestess runs an altar.

For forty years she had folded swaddles in the Silverfang pack house. She had warmed bottles for Liam himself when he was a pup. The nursery wing smelled, always, of warm milk and lavender — Etta's scent, soaked so deeply into the walls that Levi's first breaths had been seasoned with it.

So when I came down the back stairs that morning with Barnaby padding at my heel, and I heard Etta's voice — low, polite, but stitched tight as a seam — I stopped short of the doorway.

"Miss Giselle. I'm sorry. Nursery access is approved caregivers only. Pack protocol."

A small gasp. The kind designed to be heard.

"Oh," Giselle whispered. "I just wanted to look at him. He's so little."

I stepped into the doorway.

Giselle stood three feet from Levi's bassinet, one pale hand floating mid-reach. Etta had placed herself, quietly and entirely, between that hand and my son. Her shoulders were narrow. Her chin was up. She did not move.

Giselle's eyes lifted to mine. Wide. Wet. Apologetic.

"Luna," she breathed. "I didn't mean to upset anyone."

"Of course not." I crossed the room and lifted Levi out of the bassinet myself. He was warm and milk-drunk, his small mouth working against nothing. "Etta is right. The protocol is for his health."

Giselle's lashes trembled. She drifted out without another word, leaving behind that thick gardenia scent that always took ten minutes to clear from a room.

Etta's hands were shaking. She hid it by smoothing the bassinet sheet.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

She didn't look up. "Luna. That woman — " She stopped herself. Her mouth pressed thin. "Forgive me."

"Don't," I said. "Don't ever apologize to me for protecting him."

She nodded. Just once. Then she went back to folding burp cloths with hands that wouldn't quite hold still.

---

Two days later it happened.

I was in the study, pretending to answer correspondence. Josephine's draft had landed in my inbox at 3 a.m. — sixty-eight pages of pack law tightened to a wire. I was reading it for the fourth time when Barnaby's head jerked up off my foot.

He growled, low and sustained.

Then the scream came.

It was Levi.

I have never moved like that in my life. I do not remember the stairs. I do not remember the hallway. I remember the door of the nursery slamming back against the wall under my hand, and the smell hitting me first — scalded silver, burnt lavender, gardenias.

Etta was on her knees by the bassinet. The back of her gray uniform was dark and wet, steam still rising off the fabric. She had thrown herself over the bassinet — I could see it in the angle of her body, the way her arms still cupped around the rails. Levi was screaming the high, ragged scream of a baby who has never known pain before.

A silver teapot lay on its side on the rug, leaking dark amber across the wool.

Giselle was crumpled against the doorframe with one hand over her mouth.

"It tipped," she sobbed. "I tripped — the rug — oh Goddess, oh Goddess, the baby — "

I was already lifting Levi. His left sleeve was wet. I peeled it back and saw the angry red stripe blooming across his tiny forearm, the skin already lifting in a thin silver line where the metal had touched him.

A sound came out of me that wasn't a word.

Etta struggled up to her feet. Her uniform clung to her back. She had to be in agony. She didn't make a sound about it.

"Luna," she said, low and clear, "she walked in carrying it. She did not trip. She tipped it deliberately when I moved to stop her."

Giselle wailed.

And then Liam was there.

He came through the doorway at a dead run, his shirt half-buttoned, his eyes wild — and they went past me. They went past Levi screaming in my arms. They landed on Giselle.

He went to her.

He knelt at the doorframe and gathered her shaking shoulders against his chest, and I watched my mate cradle the woman who had just burned our son.

"Shh," he was saying. "Shh, it's all right, I've got you — "

"Liam," I said.

His head came up.

For one second — one — his eyes registered Levi. The red mark. My face. Something behind his expression flickered, the ghost of a man I used to know.

Then Giselle pressed her face into his shoulder and sobbed, "I'll leave, I'll leave tonight, I'm a curse, I shouldn't have come — "

And the ghost went out.

Etta stepped forward. Her voice did not shake.

"Alpha. With respect. I witnessed it. The guest brought silver into the nursery. She tipped the pot intentionally when I moved between her and the pup. I will swear it on the Moon."

Liam's jaw set.

I saw his hand come up. I saw his fingers rub, once, slow, along the edge of his jaw.

"Etta," he said.

His Alpha tone dropped into the room like a stone into still water. I felt it ripple against my spine. Etta — old, brave, lavender-and-milk Etta — sagged at the knees as it hit her, and caught herself on the bassinet rail with both hands.

"You are stripped of your nursery duties," Liam said. "Effective now. You will leave the pack house grounds before sundown. We do not fabricate accusations against guests under this roof."

Etta's mouth opened.

No sound came out.

I looked down at my screaming son. I looked at the silver welt rising on his arm. I looked at the woman weeping prettily in my mate's arms.

And somewhere very deep inside me, the last thread holding seven years together went quietly, cleanly slack.
