The Silverfang ballroom gleams with gold light and expensive wine as allied packs gather to celebrate my one-month-old son, Levi. Wearing an ivory silk Luna gown, I hold him close, hiding my aching body beneath a mask of strength. Beside me stands Liam, my powerful Alpha husband whose pine-and-musk scent used to be my sanctuary. Yet, beneath this picture-perfect celebration of our new heir, a dark current of betrayal is brewing that will force a devastating choice.

After He Defended Her, I Rejected My Alpha Mate Chapter 1

The Silverfang pack house had never looked more beautiful than it did that night.

Crystal chandeliers threw warm gold light across the grand ballroom. White peonies and eucalyptus cascaded down every table. The air smelled of expensive wine, roasted lamb, and the mingled scents of a dozen allied packs gathered to celebrate one thing: my son.

Levi was exactly one month old, and he was perfect.

I held him against my chest, his small warm weight anchored against my Luna gown — ivory silk, fitted at the waist, the kind of dress that said I am still here, I am still strong, even when every muscle in my body still ached from the birth. He slept through the noise the way only the very new and the very innocent can. One tiny fist curled against my collarbone.

Liam stood at my side. Tall, broad-shouldered, his Alpha aura radiating that familiar deep pine-and-musk scent that had once made me feel like the safest person in any room. He had his hand at the small of my back, and when Harrison — the most respected allied Alpha on the East Coast — raised his glass in a toast, Liam smiled down at me with something that still looked like pride.

I smiled back. Seven years. We had built all of this together, brick by brick.

For one shining moment, everything was exactly as it should be.

"To Luna Camille," Harrison said, his deep voice carrying across the room, "and to the newest Silverfang wolf. May he be half as formidable as his mother."

Laughter. The clink of crystal. Liam's hand pressed a little warmer against my back.

Then his eyes went distant.

I noticed it immediately — that particular blankness that meant a mind-link had pulled him somewhere else. It happened all the time. Pack business. I didn't think anything of it.

But then his nostrils flared.

It was subtle. Most people in the room wouldn't have caught it. But I had spent seven years sleeping beside this man, studying every microexpression, every flicker behind his eyes. I watched him catch a scent. Something sweet. Something floral and cloying, drifting from somewhere beyond the walls.

His hand dropped from my back.

He set his champagne glass down on the nearest table — carefully, precisely, like a man making a decision he'd already made — and he walked away. No word to me. No word to Harrison, who stood mid-toast with his glass still raised. No glance back at the son sleeping against my chest.

He just walked out of his own son's banquet.

The room didn't go silent all at once. It was more like a slow exhale — conversations dropping off in ripples as people registered what they'd seen. I felt every allied Alpha's eyes shift to me.

I kept smiling. I adjusted Levi against my shoulder. I turned back to Harrison and said, very calmly, "Please forgive him. Pack business."

Harrison looked at me for a long moment. He was too diplomatic to say what was in his eyes.

"Of course," he said.

The banquet dissolved after that. Not loudly. Just quietly, the way things do when the center doesn't hold.

---

It was past midnight when Liam came back.

He wasn't alone.

She was small, pale, with dark hair that fell loose around her shoulders. She moved like someone who had learned to make her fragility visible — every step a little uncertain, every glance a little overwhelmed, as though the world were simply too large and too bright for her. She smelled of gardenias and something else underneath. Something I couldn't quite name. Sweet on the surface. Wrong beneath it.

Liam had his hand on her elbow, guiding her through the front door of my pack house like she belonged there.

I was in the study when he summoned me. I came because I was still, in that moment, his Luna.

He told me her name was Giselle. He told me she was his childhood friend, that her inner wolf was dying from rogue trauma, that the healers said a formal Mate Ceremony — the ritual, the vows, the public anchoring — might be the only thing that could save her spirit.

He told me he needed me to temporarily conceal our mate mark. Step back. Give her this ceremony.

He used his Alpha tone when he said it. That deep, resonant frequency that pressed against the base of the skull and made your instincts want to fold. I felt it move through me like a cold current.

"It's just to anchor her spirit, Camille." His jaw was set. His eyes didn't quite meet mine. "You're strong enough. She isn't. Surely you understand."

I looked at him. I didn't look away. I never do — not from difficult truths, not from men who think their authority is the same thing as being right.

I let the silence stretch for three full seconds.

Then I said, quietly, "I understand."

He exhaled. His shoulders dropped. He actually looked relieved — like the hard part was over, like my composure was the same as my consent.

"Thank you," he said. "I knew you'd see reason."

He left.

The door clicked shut behind him.

I stood very still for a moment. Then I walked to the bassinet in the corner, picked up the blanket draped over its edge, and began to fold it. Corner to corner. Smooth. Precise. I folded it again. And again.

Control. When everything else is gone, you find it in small things.

Then I opened the mind-link to my sister.

*Jo,* I said. *I need you to draft the severance papers. All of them. Make them ironclad.*

A beat of silence. Then Josephine's voice, sharp and steady as a blade.

*Already on it.*
