Chapter 2

The next morning, our acquisition meeting began at Bellhaven Medical’s headquarters—the same place where Chloe had stripped me in public.

The lobby had been remodeled, but the elevator still chimed in the same soft tone.

For a moment, my body remembered. My palms cooled. The scar at the back of my neck, nearly invisible now, seemed to sting where the necklace chain had cut me.

Then Rachel handed me the presentation tablet.

“You lead,” she said.

I entered the conference room without slowing.

Bellhaven’s new executives stood to greet us. I had just begun discussing NovaGen’s proposed investment when the doors opened and Chloe swept inside.

She had changed less than I expected. Her blond hair was immaculate, her diamond earrings large enough to finance a small laboratory, and her smile sharpened the moment she saw me.

“Evelyn?”

No one had invited her. Harrington Industries, however, owned a significant piece of Bellhaven’s manufacturing division, which explained why security had not stopped her.

She looked me up and down.

“I heard a rumor you were back. How dare you come back?”

I waited.

Her gaze moved to the men in tailored suits around me. “You’ve done well for yourself. Which one is paying this time?”

Bellhaven’s president Mr. Crowe went pale. “Ms. Harrington—”

“It’s fine,” I said.

Chloe smiled, thinking I had surrendered.

She stepped closer. “Adrian and I are finalizing our wedding. You lost him six years ago, and you’re still losing.”

Her words should have hurt.

They did not.

Adrian belonged to a life I had buried. Whether he married Chloe, a heiress, or a performer had nothing to do with me.

I closed the licensing proposal on my tablet.

“Are you finished?” I asked.

Her smile faltered.

I turned to the executives. “NovaGen will reconsider the arrangement. Rachel, please contact Easton Laboratories and tell them we're considering their competing proposal.”

The room erupted.

Mr. Crowe leaned forward. “Dr. Carter, surely we can resolve—”

“NovaGen does not expose proprietary research to partners whose representatives interrupt negotiations to make defamatory accusations.”

Chloe laughed. “You can’t be serious.”

I met her eyes. “I rarely joke about sixty million dollars.”

Only then did someone whisper my position to her.

I watched disbelief move across her face.

“You?” she said. “You’re the scientist from NovaGen?”

“And a shareholder,” Rachel added pleasantly.

Chloe’s expression twisted.

I left before she could answer without noticing her expression.

By early evening, the Harrington board had learned that NovaGen was speaking to Easton. By seven, Bellhaven’s stock dipped after an industry reporter mentioned uncertainty around the deal. At eight forty-five, reception called my hotel suite.

“Mr. Charles Harrington and his daughter are here to see you.”

I heard my son Leo laughing in the adjoining private lounge where his nanny, Sofia, had built a fortress from couch cushions.

“Send them to the sitting room,” I said. “Not the inner suite.”

Charles Harrington entered first, one hand clamped around Chloe’s arm. He was a silver-haired man with the exhausted look of someone accustomed to cleaning up expensive disasters.

“Dr. Carter,” he said. “My daughter behaved disgracefully. She will apologize.”

Chloe jerked her arm free. “Dad—”

“Now.”

She glared at me. “I’m sorry your feelings were hurt.”

I leaned back in my chair. “That is not an apology.”

Charles’s jaw tightened.

Chloe tried again. “I’m sorry I interrupted your meeting and made comments about your private life.”

“And six years ago?”

Her eyes flashed. “You were sleeping with my fiancé.”

“I was dating a man who gave me a false job, a false history, and no information about you. You assaulted me at my workplace. Your guards removed my clothing while my coworkers watched. Your family then pressured my employer to dismiss me.”

“I didn’t remove your clothing.”

“You took my coat, shoes, and necklace. Would you prefer I ask the witnesses which word you used?”

Charles turned toward his daughter slowly. Some of the details were apparently new to him.

“You told me you confronted her privately.”

“She’s exaggerating.”

“The security footage still exists,” I said.

That was not entirely true. I did not yet know what remained. Chloe did not need to know that.

Fear flickered in her eyes.

Before Charles could respond, a small thump came from the inner room. The door opened, and Leo appeared in dinosaur pajamas, clutching a green toy dragon.

“Mommy, Sofia says the castle needs an engineer.”

He stopped when he saw our guests.

Leo was five, serious for exactly ten seconds at a time, with dark hair, gray eyes, and the unmistakable Whitmore dimple in his left cheek.

Charles Harrington stared at him.

Chloe went rigid.

Her face changed from annoyance to shock, then to fury.

“How old is he?” she demanded.

I rose. “You don’t get to question my child.”

Leo came to my side and placed his warm hand in mine. “Who are they?”

“People who were leaving.”

Charles looked from Leo to me. “Dear God.”

Chloe took one step forward. “Adrian’s?”

The inner door opened wider. Sofia appeared behind Leo, watchful.

I moved my son behind me.

“That is none of your business.”

Chloe’s breath became shallow. “You had his child. You disappeared with his child.”

I said nothing.

Silence was useful. People filled it with their own guilt, fear, and assumptions.

Charles seized Chloe’s arm again. This time, she did not resist. They walked so fast that they forgot the purpose of their visit.

Leo tugged my sleeve. “Mommy, why did the shiny lady look mad?”

“Some people get angry when the world doesn’t match the story in their head.”

“Is she a villain?”

I considered it. “She made villainous choices.”

He nodded solemnly. “Then she can’t come into our castle.”

“Agreed.”

After Sofia took him back inside, I stood at the window and watched Charles’s car leave the hotel.

I knew exactly what Chloe felt.

There was a photograph in the Whitmore family archives of Adrian at five years old. I had seen it once, long ago.

Leo looked almost identical.

She thought my son belonged to my former boyfriend.

She had no idea the truth was far more devastating.
