Chapter 3

I took Leo to Bellhaven Galleria on Saturday because he had survived four days of adult meetings without feeding crackers to a single investor.

He chose a remote-controlled spaceship and a book about ocean predators. We were debating whether a giant squid could defeat a shark when a familiar voice called out to me from behind.

“Evelyn.”

I recognized Adrian’s voice.

I turned slowly.

At thirty-one, he was broader than the young man I remembered, but his gray eyes were the same. His dark hair curled slightly at the temples.

For six years, I had imagined this meeting. In some versions, I slapped him. In others, I delivered a perfect speech and watched regret destroy him.

The reality was quieter.

He looked at me as if I had walked out of a grave.

“You’re alive.”

“That was always the most likely possibility.”

His eyes filled. “I searched everywhere.”

Leo stepped out from behind me. “Mommy, who is he?”

Adrian stared.

The color left his face. His lips parted, but no sound emerged.

Leo frowned at him. “Are you sick?”

Adrian crouched too quickly, then stopped himself from reaching out. “What’s your name?”

“Leo.”

“How old are you, Leo?”

I placed a hand on my son’s shoulder. “We’re leaving.”

Adrian rose. Tears slipped down his cheeks. He did not wipe them away.

“He’s mine.”

I should have corrected him.

I knew what he was calculating: six years, Leo’s age, the Whitmore similar face. I knew it could become dangerous in a powerful family.

But I remembered standing barefoot while Chloe took the last thing from my body. I remembered calling Adrian until dawn and hearing the same dead tone.

So I said, “You don’t have the right to ask.”

His face crumpled as if that were confirmation.

“Evelyn, please. I didn’t abandon you.”

“You were engaged.”

“My parents arranged it when I was nineteen. I told them I would cancel it. The night before Chloe confronted you, my father found out about us. They took my phone and locked me at the family estate.”

I laughed once. “It sounds like a rich man blaming his parents for his lies.”

“I lied because I wanted one thing in my life that wasn’t controlled by the Whitmores. I planned to tell you. I was going to reject the engagement publicly and ask you to marry me.”

“After how many more months of letting me live a lie?”

He flinched.

Leo looked between us, sensing the tension. I took his hand.

Adrian followed as we moved toward the elevator. “Let me take care of you both. I’ll fix this.”

“I don’t need your care.”

“I still love you.”

The elevator opened.

I stepped inside with Leo. “Then you should have loved me enough to tell me the truth.”

The doors closed on his devastated face.

My satisfaction lasted less than a day.

On Monday afternoon, I arrived at Leo’s private school at three fifteen. His teacher, Mrs. Alvarez, met me at the entrance with a puzzled smile.

“Leo left about twenty minutes ago.”

The air vanished from my lungs. “With whom?”

“His grandparents. The office said they were on the approved list.”

“No.” I grabbed my phone. “His grandparents live in California.”

Her smile disappeared.

We ran to the office. The administrator pulled up the electronic record. The camera showed two elders leading Leo into a black car. My son looked uncertain, but the old woman held his hand and smiled at him.

I called the police.

Then I called Adrian.

He did not answer.

A cold, irrational terror took hold of me. Every terrible possibility arrived at once. Leo frightened. Leo crying. Leo asking for me while strangers told him lies.

I called Damian.

His phone went directly to voicemail.

Then an unknown number called.

“This is Eleanor Whitmore.” The woman said. “Your son is safe. Come to the Whitmore estate. Alone.”

“If you hurt him—”

“Don’t be dramatic. We are his family. The address has been sent to you.”

I did not wait. I drove faster than I should have.

The estate looked exactly as Damian once described it: stone walls, iron gates, and generations of power displayed in architecture. A butler led me through a hall lined with portraits into a formal drawing room.

A lady I guessed to be Eleanor sat on a cream sofa as if hosting tea. The old man stood by the fireplace must be her husband, Richard Whitmore.

Leo was nowhere in sight.

“Where is my son?”

“He’s having supper with the housekeeper,” Eleanor said. “Sit down.”

“Bring him to me.”

Richard’s gaze traveled over my clothes. “Still issuing demands.”

I had never met them, yet their contempt felt practiced.

Eleanor gestured toward a chair. “We know what you did. You hid Adrian’s child for five years and returned when NovaGen needed a deal. The timing is transparent. We are here to discuss custody calmly.”

“There will be no custody discussion.”

Richard opened a leather folder and slid a check across the table. The number had seven zeroes.

“You will have enough to live comfortably anywhere you choose,” he said. “In return, Leo remains with the Whitmore family. You will sign a nondisclosure agreement and relinquish parental rights.”

I stared at the check.

Six years ago, that amount might have frightened me. Now it represented less than one quarter of my annual dividends.

Eleanor mistook my silence for temptation.

“Young women like you always claim love until the price becomes high enough.”

A laugh rose from my chest—soft, disbelieving, and sharp.

“You kidnapped my son,” I said, “and now you’re trying to buy him from me with my own level of pocket change.”

Richard’s face reddened. “Watch your tone.”

Eleanor stood. “You think a few company shares make you equal to us?”

I folded the check in half, then tore it down the center.

“I think being his mother makes me more than equal to you.”

I let the pieces fall onto their perfect carpet.

“Now bring me my child.”

At the time, the butler came in and announced that the head of the Whitmore family had come home.

A man entered with rain on his coat and fury in his gray eyes. He had the kind of face that stopped people mid-sentence. Sharp jawline catching the light, high cheekbones that gave him a slightly dangerous elegance, and eyes dark enough to hold secrets. Even the way he stood, tall and unhurried, made the air around him feel charged.

Richard turned to him and said, “You’re back just in time, Damian. This woman is blackmailing us. She secretly gave birth to your nephew’s son without us knowing. Teach her a lesson.”
