Abandoned by my husband and son at the World Cup Chapter 1

"I'm not on the flight." I stared at the digital boarding pass on Bastian's phone.

"There was a glitch in the system," Bastian said. He shoved his passport into his designer duffel bag.

"A glitch that only kicked the wife off the itinerary?" I asked.

"My assistant handled the booking. Don't start a fight right now."

"Your assistant, Sarah, who double-checks everything three times?" I pressed. "She accidentally booked me on a different airline, three hours later?"

"Yes, Zelda. Mistakes happen." He didn't even look up.

Bastian Falkner, heir to the Falkner shipping empire, never admitted fault.

"Dad, are we going to be late?" Ewan bounced on his sneakers, clutching his soccer ball.

"No, buddy. We're leaving right now." Bastian zipped the bag.

"What about my ticket?" I asked.

"Your flight leaves in four hours. Economy class. It was the only seat left."

"You want me to fly commercial while you and our son take the private charter?"

"It gets you to Mexico City, doesn't it?" He checked his watch. "I'll text you the hotel address when we land."

"Bastian, this is ridiculous. We planned this family trip for months."

"And we are still going on the trip. You're just taking a different plane."

I crossed my arms. I should have screamed. I should have thrown his duffel bag across the marble foyer. Instead, I chuckled. A dry, hollow sound.

"Fine. Go enjoy the World Cup warm-ups."

Bastian paused, clearly surprised by my lack of resistance. He grabbed Ewan's hand.

"Bye, Mom!" Ewan yelled, already running out the door.

"Be safe," I called after him.

The heavy oak door slammed shut. Silence filled the massive house. I brushed off the unease creeping up my spine. He was just being careless. He was always careless.

Three hours later. Terminal 4.

I sat in a plastic chair, sipping black tea. The airport hummed with travelers, but I felt entirely isolated. My phone buzzed against the table.

I opened Instagram to kill time. Vivian's profile sat at the top of my feed. Vivian, the internationally renowned painter. Bastian's childhood sweetheart.

A new story ring glowed pink around her profile picture. I tapped the screen.

The photo loaded, bright and crisp. First-class cabin. Wide leather seats. Crystal champagne flutes resting on a mahogany tray.

Vivian sat in the window seat, smiling brightly. She wore a flawless silk blouse. Bastian leaned in close, his shoulder pressed against hers. On Vivian's lap sat Ewan, grinning widely and holding up a foam finger.

The caption sat at the bottom in bold white letters: *Family, World Cup. ⚽❤️*

The paper cup crumpled in my grip. Hot tea spilled over my knuckles.

I didn't feel the burn.

The screen glared back at me. A perfect, happy family. Without me.

"Ma'am? Are you alright?" a woman next to me asked, pointing at the puddle of tea on the floor.

"I'm fine," I said. My voice sounded like it belonged to someone else.

I grabbed a napkin and wiped my hand. I stared at the photo again. Ewan was wearing the jersey I bought him yesterday. Vivian's manicured hand rested on Bastian's knee.

This wasn't an assistant's mistake.

This was an ambush.

"Boarding group C," the gate agent announced over the intercom.

I didn't cry. I didn't throw my phone against the wall. I carefully locked the screen and slid the device into my pocket. I picked up my carry-on bag.

I would survive this fourteen-hour flight. I would find them. And I would hear him say it to my face.

The stadium in Mexico City roared with the sound of eighty thousand fans. Spotlights swept across the VIP hospitality suites, casting long shadows on the concourse.

I flashed my credentials at the security guard. He stepped aside.

I pushed through the heavy glass doors of the Falkner corporate suite. The room was air-conditioned, lined with catered buffets and plush velvet sofas. The noise of the crowd faded into a dull hum behind the thick glass.

I scanned the room.

They stood near the dessert station.

Vivian wore a sleek crimson dress. Bastian held a cocktail, laughing at something she said. Ewan stood between them, holding Vivian's hand.

I walked forward, my sneakers silent on the thick carpet.

"Mom, look!" Ewan pointed at a towering chocolate fountain.

The word hit my chest like a hammer. *Mom.*

He wasn't talking to me.

Vivian smiled down at my son. "Do you want a marshmallow dipped in it, sweetie?"

"Yes, please!" Ewan jumped up and down. "Zelda never buys me chocolate. She's so mean."

*Zelda.*

My own flesh and blood. The boy I carried for nine months. The boy I stayed up with during every fever.

"Zelda just doesn't understand how to let you have fun," Vivian cooed, grabbing a wooden skewer.

Bastian took a sip of his drink. "Don't bring her up. Let's just enjoy the night."

I stepped into their circle.

"He's allergic," I said.

Bastian flinched, splashing his drink onto his cuff.

Vivian froze, the marshmallow hovering over the dark chocolate stream.

Ewan hid behind Vivian's skirt.

"What are you doing here?" Bastian demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"I took my economy flight," I answered, keeping my tone perfectly level. "Like a good wife."

"You weren't supposed to arrive until tomorrow," Bastian snapped.

"Clearly." I shifted my gaze to Vivian. "Put the skewer down, Vivian. Cocoa sends him into anaphylactic shock. His throat closes in three minutes."

Vivian dropped the stick onto a napkin. "I was just trying to treat him. You don't have to be so dramatic."

"Dramatic?" I asked. "You post a picture with my husband and my son, call yourselves a family, and then try to feed him poison?"

Bastian grabbed my elbow. "Keep your voice down. People are staring."

I yanked my arm away. "Let them stare."

Ewan peeked out from behind Vivian. "Go away, Zelda. We don't want you here."

The air left my lungs.

"Ewan," I whispered. "It's me. Mommy."

"Vivian is my mom now," the boy declared, gripping the red fabric of her dress. "Dad said so."

I stared at Bastian.

He didn't deny it. He didn't correct our son. He just adjusted his collar.

"We were going to tell you after the trip," Bastian said. "Vivian and I are getting back together. I'm filing for full custody."

"On what grounds?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

"On the grounds that you're unfit," Vivian chimed in, a victorious smirk on her lips.

"Unfit?" I asked.

"We have the paperwork," Bastian said. "And Ewan's testimony. He prefers Vivian. She actually lets him enjoy his life."

I looked at the three of them. A united front. They had planned this. The flight mix-up. The public Instagram post. The alienation of my son.

They thought they had broken me.

"You think you can just erase me?" I asked.

Bastian stepped closer, towering over me. "I already have. Now leave, before I have security throw you out of my suite."

I took one step back. Then another.

"Okay," I said.

Bastian frowned, confused by my easy surrender.

I turned around and walked toward the exit. I didn't look back. They thought they had won. They thought I would crumble and disappear.

But as I pushed the glass doors open and stepped back into the roaring stadium concourse, I pulled out my phone and dialed my lawyer.

Bastian Falkner was about to learn exactly what happened when you backed a mother into a corner.
