You Told Me to Abort Her, Now She Calls Your Rival Daddy
Chapter 2
POV: Claire
The glare of hundreds of camera flashes bounced off the crystal chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom, blinding anyone within twenty feet of the raised stage.
After getting Lily safely back to Mrs. Gable, Claire had reported to the catering agency for the Reed Group gala. She needed the extra shift too badly to cancel.
Claire kept her head down, pushing a heavy metal cart loaded with spare glassware along the shadowy edge of the perimeter wall. Her lower back ached, and her uniform, a stiff, ill-fitting black catering vest over a plain white shirt, chafed against her collarbone.
On stage, Lucas Reed took Amanda Vance’s left hand.
He slid a ten-carat, cushion-cut diamond onto her ring finger. The flawless stone caught the overhead spotlights, glittering with obscene brilliance. The crowd of Manhattan’s elite erupted into polite, synchronized applause as journalists shoved their lenses forward.
Lucas smiled down at his fiancée. It was a warm, practiced expression, perfectly calibrated for the morning business covers.
Claire watched him from the shadows, her grip tightening on the handle of her cart until her knuckles ached.
Five years ago, in the dim light of a hotel room before dawn, that same mouth had pressed against her temple. And hours later, when she asked what they were to each other, his voice had been cold enough to freeze blood: *Love is worthless when measured against capital, Claire. Don't confuse physical convenience with ambition.*
Now, he played the besotted billionaire with effortless perfection.
"Admiring the view?" a sneering voice purred from behind her.
Claire turned as Amanda Vance stepped through the velvet curtain separating the ballroom from the backstage service corridor.
Amanda held a glass of vintage Cabernet, her eyes raking over Claire’s faded sneakers and polyester vest with sheer delight. She took a slow step forward, tilted her wrist, and let a steady stream of dark red wine pour directly over the toes of Claire’s shoes.
The liquid splattered across Claire's trouser cuffs, soaking into the fabric.
"Oops," Amanda murmured, not bothering to sound apologetic. "My hand slipped. But then again, dirty floors are meant for spills, aren't they?"
Claire didn't flinch. She pulled a folded utility rag from her cart, bent down, and calmly wiped the excess wine from the leather of her shoes.
"You should be careful, Miss Vance," Claire said, rising to her full height. Her voice was flat, devoid of the humiliation Amanda clearly expected. "Dry cleaning on a couture gown costs more than you think."
Amanda’s smile vanished, replaced by a sharp scowl. "Still acting proud? You’re a bug under Lucas's shoe. You thought bringing that little bastard to the executive floor would make him look at you twice? You’re pathetic. A piece of Queens garbage clinging to the bottom of his empire."
Claire stepped closer, her gaze dropping to the diamond glittering on Amanda’s hand.
"That ring looks heavy," Claire said quietly. "Does it ever remind you of where it came from?"
Amanda stiffened. "What did you say?"
"The neural-network anomaly-detection algorithm," Claire whispered, her eyes locking onto Amanda’s widening pupils. "The one you stole from my thesis file five years ago and handed to your father's shell company. The one that gave Vance Holdings the leverage to partner with Reed Group in the first place."
Color drained from Amanda's carefully contoured cheeks.
"You're wearing stolen property on your finger, Amanda," Claire said, leaning in just an inch. "And we both know you don't even understand the math behind it."
"Shut your mouth!" Amanda hissed, raising her free hand as if to strike.
Before the slap could fall, heavy footsteps echoed from the executive lounge down the private corridor. Amanda froze, lowered her hand with a murderous glare, and pivoted on her designer heels, disappearing into the VIP suite.
Claire let out a slow breath, adjusting her cart to move toward the service elevators.
Then she heard Lucas’s voice through the partially cracked door of the VIP lounge.
"Are you out of your mind?"
Claire paused. The harsh, serrated tone was stripped entirely of the smooth charisma he had shown on stage. She pulled her cart into the utility alcove beside the door, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Lucas, please lower your voice!" Amanda was crying now, genuine panic fraying her words. "It wasn't my idea! My brother authorized the transfer to cover the shortfall in Singapore..."
"Twenty million dollars," Lucas cut in, his voice dropping below zero. "Vance Holdings siphoned twenty million out of the group’s overseas accounts. The external auditor arrives Monday morning for the review ahead of the secondary offering. If they trace the Luxembourg routing numbers to your family, the Vance partnership collapses, and the entire offering will be suspended."
"You have to bury it!" Amanda pleaded, her voice choked with tears. "You promised my father! If the SEC finds out, my family will be ruined. We won't be able to get married..."
"The audit is already flagged," Lucas snapped. "The digital footprint exists. It can't be deleted."
A heavy silence hung in the room. Claire held her breath, pressing herself flatter against the cold drywall.
"Then what do we do?" Amanda sobbed. "Lucas, tell me what to do!"
"We redirect it," Lucas said, his tone turning clinical, calculating, and completely detached. "The retail logistics department handles international supply chain invoices. We alter the backend permissions. Reroute the Luxembourg approval tokens through a single employee terminal."
"Who?" Amanda asked, sniffling. "Who would have access?"
"The junior analyst who started last month," Lucas said without a shred of hesitation. "Claire Hall."
The name struck Claire like a physical blow. The air in the corridor seemed to vanish.
"Claire?" Amanda gasped, a sudden tremor of vicious hope in her voice. "Can you pin twenty million on her?"
"Her digital signature will be on every forged authorization," Lucas continued smoothly, detailing the scheme as if he were discussing a minor stock split. "By midnight tomorrow, the altered files will show she diverted the funds into offshore shell accounts. When the federal investigators arrive on Monday, the evidence will point straight to her desk."
"She'll go to prison," Amanda whispered.
"A junior clerk does a few years in federal prison," Lucas replied coldly. "Once the offering clears and the stock stabilizes, we'll arrange a quiet settlement for her family. A few hundred thousand dollars in an offshore trust. She should be grateful."
Outside in the dim corridor, the last remaining trace of Claire’s past died.
The foolish girl who had kept a stranger's cufflink in a velvet pouch for five years vanished. The woman who had quietly endured low wages, long nights, and exhausted commutes just to survive in the lower reaches of his empire crumbled into ash.
All that remained was an icy, impenetrable stillness.
Claire did not weep. She did not tremble.
With steady fingers, she tapped the screen of her phone, which had been resting upright inside the pocket of her vest, the microphone aimed directly through the door gap. She hit *Stop Recording*.
She stepped away from the door, slipped down the service hallway, and ducked into the empty freight control room.
From the bottom pocket of her uniform, Claire produced a sleek, titanium encrypted drive. During her midnight audit shifts over the past two weeks, she hadn't just balanced retail spreadsheets. She had uncovered anomalies in the European freight ledger that hadn't added up. She had kept the raw, unedited system logs right here.
She plugged the drive into her tablet, synchronized the original ledger files, and attached the crystal-clear audio recording of Lucas and Amanda plotting her imprisonment.
She opened an encrypted messaging client.
One contact was pinned at the top: *J. Wright.*
Julian Wright. Lucas Reed’s fiercest rival, a hedge fund titan, and one of Claire’s oldest friends from graduate school. For the past three years, he had stayed quietly in Claire and Lily’s lives. Lily trusted him enough to call him Daddy. Claire, however, had refused every offer of financial help, determined never to owe another powerful man, and Julian had never known how close Lily’s medical bills had pushed her to the edge.
Claire typed three sentences:
*The Luxembourg ledger was fabricated. Vance Holdings stole twenty million, and Lucas Reed is setting up a junior analyst to clear the audit.*
*Attached are the unedited logs and full audio confession.*
*Do you want to burn them, Julian?*
She hit send.
The progress bar filled instantly, flashing green: *Delivered.*
Claire pulled the drive from the tablet, tucked it safely beneath her collar, and stepped back into the corridor. A faint, razor-sharp smile touched her lips as she walked toward the exit, leaving the golden trap behind her.
