Chapter 3

POV: Claire

By eight in the morning, the forty-second floor of Reed Tower was dead silent.

Claire sat at her small corner desk, methodically sliding her personal notebooks into a worn canvas tote. She had barely zipped the compartment when heavy footsteps echoed against the laminate floorboards.

Harrison Cole, the Reed Group’s chief legal counsel, stopped directly in front of her cubicle.

Beside him stood Evelyn Cross, the senior director of corporate communications, flanked by two armed building security guards.

Harrison didn't waste time with pleasantries. He slammed a thick red folder onto the center of Claire’s desk. The heavy thump rattled her pen holder.

"Sign it, Hall," Harrison said, his voice flat and clinical. "Every page. Bottom right corner."

Claire didn't touch the folder. "What is this?"

"A voluntary confession and severance waiver," Harrison replied, unscrewing a silver fountain pen and laying it beside the paperwork. "You will formally admit to unauthorized fund diversion regarding the Luxembourg logistics ledger. You will acknowledge that you acted alone, without the knowledge or consent of the executive board. In exchange, the company agrees not to seek immediate criminal prosecution."

Across the open floor, dozens of employees peeked over their cubicle partitions.

Whispers broke out, sharp and venomous.

"Twenty million dollars?" a senior clerk muttered, loud enough to carry. "I knew she was shifty. That's what happens when you hire desperate single mothers."

"Look at her, not even crying," another whispered with a cruel smirk. "She probably thought she could cash out and skip town."

Claire kept her hands flat on the desk, looking down at the forged admission. Every line had been crafted to clear the Vance family and protect the upcoming secondary offering.

"And if I refuse?" Claire asked quietly.

"You don't have that option," Harrison said, leaning down until his palms rested on her partition. "You sign, or we turn the file over to federal investigators and have security detain you until they arrive."

The chime of the private executive elevator cut through the tension.

The heavy double doors slid open, and the entire floor fell utterly still.

Lucas Reed walked into the room.

He wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his posture rigid and commanding. The executives and analysts parted instantly, ducking their heads as he swept past them like a king inspecting his domain.

He stopped two feet from Claire’s desk, looking down at her with cold, merciless superiority.

"Leave us," Lucas said without looking at Harrison.

Harrison gestured to the guards and Evelyn, and the trio stepped back into the corridor, keeping the gawking staff at bay.

Lucas looked down at Claire, his slate-grey eyes devoid of any warmth. "Harrison explained your position."

"He gave me a forged confession," Claire replied, her voice steady.

"He gave you a lifeline," Lucas countered smoothly, his tone lowering to a harsh, private murmur. "The external auditor is arriving. The twenty-million-dollar gap must have a name, Claire. It won't be Amanda's, and it won't be mine."

He stepped closer, resting a single hand on the edge of her desk.

"Sign the papers. Take the blame for the logistics shortfall. You'll serve a quiet two-year sentence in a minimum-security facility in upstate New York. While you're there, the Reed Foundation will establish a trust fund. Your bastard will receive five thousand dollars a month. She won't have to beg on the street."

He looked at her as if he were granting a beggar royal mercy.

"Consider it generous. It’s more money than you or that stray child will ever see in your lives."

Claire stared at him.

For five years, she had carried the ghost of this man in her memory. She had remembered his touch in the dark, wondering if there was any humanity beneath the empire he had built.

Now, looking into his arrogant, stone-cold face, a sudden, sharp sound escaped her throat.

Claire laughed.

It wasn't a desperate laugh. It was bright, mocking, and completely fearless.

Lucas’s brows slammed together. "You find this amusing?"

"I find you pathetic," Claire said.

Before Lucas could speak, Claire reached into her canvas bag. Her fingers closed around a thick, bound sheaf of heavy thirty-two-pound bond paper: her formal resignation letter, stapled securely to thirty pages of unedited transaction logs and the official SEC whistleblower counter-audit filing.

She rose from her chair in a single, fluid motion.

With all the force in her body, Claire whipped the heavy stack of documents straight across Lucas's face.

*SMACK.*

The sound cracked through the open-plan office like a gunshot.

The razor-sharp, crisp edges of the heavy paper slashed across Lucas's cheek and the hard line of his jaw. The bound stack burst apart, showering the executive suite in a flurry of white pages that fluttered across his polished leather shoes.

Lucas staggered back a half-step, stunned.

A collective gasp ripped through the entire floor. Harrison Cole froze in horror.

Lucas raised a trembling hand to his face. When he pulled his fingers away, bright crimson blood smeared across his fingertips from a clean, stinging cut along his jawline.

His icy composure completely shattered.

"You crazy bitch!" Lucas snarled, his voice dropping into a feral, murderous roar. "Are you out of your mind?!"

He lunged forward, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of her desk.

"You just signed your own death warrant!" Lucas shouted, his face dark with fury. "I will deploy every judge, every prosecutor, and every dollar this firm owns to bury you! You will rot in a federal cell until your hair turns grey! You think you have pride? The second you walk out of this building, you won't have enough pennies to buy that kid water, let alone bread!"

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't blink.

She reached up with both hands, took hold of the company lanyard around her neck, and snapped the clip cleanly in half.

Holding the plastic employee badge between her fingers, Claire stepped past Lucas toward the heavy-duty department shredder beside the copy center.

She slid the badge straight into the feeding slot.

The steel blades groaned, grinding the hard plastic, her employee barcode, and her smiling corporate photo into useless, pulverized confetti.

Claire turned back to face him, her chin held high, her eyes burning with pure contempt.

"Lucas," Claire said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the suffocating silence of the room. "Enjoy watching your empire crumble."

She picked up her canvas tote, slung it over her shoulder, and walked past him.

She didn't run. She didn't look back. She strode through the paralyzed sea of executives and entered the open elevator, watching the brass doors slide shut on Lucas’s bleeding, furious face.

***

Twenty minutes later, Claire stepped out of a yellow cab in front of her Queens walk-up.

Mrs. Gable was already waiting in the narrow ground-floor hallway, holding Lily’s small hand. Two hard-shell suitcases stood beside the radiator.

"Mommy!" Lily squealed, running forward in her squeaky sneakers, her pink rabbit backpack bouncing against her shoulders. "Are we going on the airplane to see the ocean now?"

"Right now, baby," Claire said, scooping Lily into her arms and kissing her forehead.

Claire handed Mrs. Gable a thick envelope containing the remaining lease balance and the apartment keys. "Thank you for everything, Mrs. Gable."

"Go, darling," the old woman whispered softly, patting Claire's arm. "Get far away from this city."

Claire loaded the bags into the trunk of a waiting airport taxi, buckled Lily into the back seat, and slid in beside her. As the cab merged onto the Grand Central Parkway heading toward JFK, Claire pulled a small metal paperclip from her pocket.

She popped open the SIM tray of her phone.

Without a second thought, Claire snapped the company-issued SIM card in half, dropped the broken plastic into an empty coffee cup, and clicked a clean, untraceable prepaid card into the slot.

She opened the encrypted messaging client.

One chat window opened instantly.

Claire typed: *Cleaned up. Evacuating as planned.*

She hit send.

***

As the taxi sped toward JFK, Claire’s phone vibrated once.

A secure audit alert filled the screen.

*COMPLIANCE LOCKDOWN: AUDIT INTEGRITY PROTOCOL ACTIVE.*

*CORE WRITE PERMISSIONS REVOKED.*

*SOURCE LOGS MIRRORED AND SEALED.*

Claire stared at the message for one long second. The attempted permission changes inside Reed Group had triggered the integrity layer embedded in the audit engine she had written five years ago. It had not erased a single record. It had locked the originals against alteration, mirrored the transaction trail, and preserved every personnel, badge, and payroll record connected to the attempted frame-up.

A final line flashed green.

*REGULATORY EVIDENCE PACKAGE SEALED.*

Claire opened the encrypted SEC submission she had prepared during the night, attached the sealed package, and pressed *Send*.

Only after the confirmation receipt appeared did she turn off the screen and look out at the highway.

Now Lucas could not rewrite the evidence even if he wanted to.
